11/3/13 - Cran Bog Hawgs Trail @ Sampsons Pond

Sampsons Pond - Carver, MA
11/3/2013

I fished the "Cran Bog Hawgs Cold Water Series" for the first time this past weekend with my buddy Paul. The trail is ran by a nice gent Dave(Wojo), I look forward trying some more. Water temps were similar to last weekend. Definitely colder air temps...add in some rain, and gusting winds made it slightly uncomfortable at time. Paul and I basically focused on the 2 spots that worked last weekend, although we found this day they would be holding a little shallower 4ft-6ft range. Paul got his 3 on the shaky head, with his best being 2.78lbs. His other 2, and my 2 were all clones about 1lb 2oz. Mine came on the drop shot. I had a decent 2lber came off mid-day that haunted me a bit. Combo of wind, and not getting a great hook-set resulted it coming off after a couple big jumps. We grinded out a 5th place finish with a limit at 7.30lbs on a tough day. Less than 2lbs off 1st places 9.15lbs. Lunker was 4.44lbs I think. The Halo boys were there and I think Kenny, and Scotty had 8-1/2lbs for 2nd place. Good Job guys, and good to see you both.

My buddy Paul asked me to fish a tournament at Sampsons on 11/3, of course I agreed. We went out for a practice run the sunday before(7:30am-3:30pm). It was chilly, and a little windy, but I've been out in worse. Water temps 53-55, and the water was down a good foot to boot. Paul had never fished here, and I had only been once. We looked at a lot of the pond, but I had an idea of a few areas we would want to concentrate on. Reaction baits got nothing, but shakey head and dropshotting would get all 8 keepers we grinded out in the 6ft-10ft depth range. Our best 5 Largemouth were about 11lbs, including my 4lb 5oz chunk, and Paul's 3lber.

This was my last club tournament of 2013 (Counts as 2nd of 2014 season). Water temps down around 60, and water level dropping due to the annual draw down starting the 15th. Down probably 8-10 inches. Usual spot as a Co-angler, My boater was Paul today, always at the top of the standings, and last year club AOY. We started shallow, Paul had a couple small keeper Smallies early on a tube, but that was it after a couple hours. After that we figured we should concentrate on a deeper bite. Off one of the community hump we stayed in area the size off a hockey rink in 20-30ft of water for the rest of the day. Paul would fill his limit rather quickly with a spider grub, while the drop shot was not happening for me. I switched it up and finally about 11am I put a decent 2-1/2lber Largemouth in the boat. Paul culled about 5-6 times. A couple hours later I put my 2nd, and last keeper of the day in the boat. I also caught 10 non-keeper largemouth. When the scales closed Paul won with a limit of 4 Largemouth, and 1 Smallie at 12.23lb including 3.08 Lunker. 2nd was a limit for 9.55lbs. I had 4th place with my 2 Largemouth at 3.88lbs.

A small group of us worked on this plan of a tournament, followed by BBQing, and watching the Pats game. Ronnie offered to host at his place on the lake. A bunch of us brought for the food to grill. Ronnie also set up the TV outside, and had a fire going. Cool set-up.

Chuck and I were one of 8 teams. Tournament went from 7:30ish to 2pm. Water still looks terrible. Weather forecast was way off, they said Sunny mid 60's, with 5-10mph winds. More like cloudy mid to high 50's, winds at 15mph with the occasional gust. Fishing was a grind all day. Chuck had a 1lber crankin' in the 1st hour. About 11am I finally get on the board with a 2-1/4lber on a spinner bait. In the next hour Chuck got a 1lb 5oz out from under a tree, I got a 1-3/4lber off a dock on a spider grub, and then about noontime I filled out the limit as a 2lb 15oz swiped at my spinner bait coming through some brush and got the trailer hook. A little after 1pm, Chuck is throwing a jig, I'm still with the spider grub at some wood. All of a sudden Chuck say "Big Fish", and I feel a good thump, set the hook, 3lb 5oz in the boat to cull out the 1lber. I then took a few minutes to weigh the rest of the fish, Chuck says "whats our small one?" I respond with "1lb 5oz", seconds later he sets the hook, 1lb 14oz to cull the 1lb 5oz. Couple nice upgrades in the last hour.

The final results were:
1st. Angry Landlords - Limit @ 12.14lbs w/ 3lb 5oz Lunker
2nd. Bite Me - Limit @ 11.58lbs w/ 3.92lb Lunker
3rd. Beaver Fever - 3 fish @ 4.88
4th. Why Not Know - Limit @ 4.86lbs
5th. R & R - 3 fish @ 3.48lbs
6th. No Catchum - 4 Fish @ 3.30lbs
7th. Dirty Bassassins - 2 Fish @ 2.14lbs
8th. Northshore - 1 fish @ 1.68lbs

After that was wrapped up, we ate like vikings, and watched the Pats. Lots of laughs all night. Most of us left when Brady threw the INT, but Chuck, and Northshore stuck around to see the magic. Great day guys!

Ill add some pictures when Johnny gets them from Ed.

I qualified for this TOC, finishing in the top 10 Co-Anglers (2nd Overall for the year), for the 2nd year in a row. Draw at the Ramp of the Top 10 boaters gets me Jay (Tournament Director) who I've fish with before. Wicked nice guy! The day started calm, but we all knew the wind would be arriving shortly. Howled pretty good 15mph, gusting to 25. Fishing was tough, though the Pickerel bite was on fire. The only 3 bass I caught were in about 45 minute span, all keepers, all on the shaky head, in the same area. That's it, bite was tough for most. Jay had 2 small keepers, My 3 Largemouth were 4.30lbs, just enough to give me a 2nd place finish. Winning Co-Angler had 10lbs plus, Winning Boater smoked everyone with 18lbs plus Including a 5.20lbs lunker Largemouth, and 2-1/2lb Smallie. Another decent finish for me in an overall solid year. Happy, but not satisfied. I'm looking for better.

Afterwork, I snuck into this private pond for 30 minutes by shore that I had only been on by cartopper twice before. Limited shore area, no real parking, private property, etc. But I know if I could get into one, It would be above average. Water was calm, and stained a little. Had 2 rods with me, chatterbait, and a jig. Fished the chatterbait for 10 minute with no action. Switched to a jig, and make multiple casts dragging slowing, or shaking in place, nothing! Finally out of frustration, I snap the jig off the bottom, start to retrieve it to recast, WHAM!!! This girl was not happy my jig was in her lip! Nice fight, get her in, weigh, pictures, release, high five myself, etc. Tipped the scale at 5lb 3oz, Definitely feeding up, belly was getting there. Couple bites, that resulted in lost trailer craws rest remainder of the outing. Even though I've had a fairly good year, I think this was my 1st over 5lbs for 2013. Sweet!

10/6/2013

Close to wrapping up the season, we had 8 teams get together and throw some money in a pot. The less then desirable weather kept to pleasure boaters away, which is a plus. The bite was tough, Chuck started by throwing a Big Swimbait, and was close to not throwing it anymore when the 1st strike came (3lber), following by 2 more in the 1st 45 minutes (4lber, and 2-3/4lber). I was throwing a River2sea Rover topwater to start, but that only yielded me a couple Pickeral. Over to the Spinnerbait, which I threw most of the day, I finally get a small larry (1-1/4lber). Move back to our starting area, and I get a bite. Didnt feel big, or put up much of a fight, but It was a 4lber as well. After that we culled 3 or 4 times with the last keeper being 1-3/4lber. Last hour of the day I tried on a soft swimbait swimming it through and over the coontail looking for a big one. I did get a 1-1/4 Bass and Pickerel, big no kicker fish. Some quality fish caught overall today. I don't recall all the weights, but

Northshore - 5 fish for 17lbs 10oz w/ 6lb 7oz lunker
Angry Landlords - 5 fish for 15lbs 8oz
Dirty Water - 5 fish for 10lbs 5oz
Basstards - 3 Fish for 10lb 4oz w / 4lb 10oz lunker
Bassasin's - 4 fish for 8lbs 14oz
Why not know - 4 fish?
Bigmouths - 3 Fish?
R&R - 4 fish for 4lbs?

Nice job Northshore! Congrats!

1st time competing in the fish-offs, and I was excited although the fishing would be a grind. Both days were different weather wise, no clouds, blue bird skies, less wind. Fog delays both days, 15-20 mins on day 1, and an hour on day 2. Avid Anglers sent 4 members, John S, and Dave as boaters, and Me and Fred as non-boaters. Top 13 at the end of day 2 qualifies for the Divisional's next year.

So day 1 I was pair with boater Jim, nice guy! Started in one of his spots both throwing topwater with no love. We see someone else near by catch one on a spinner bait, which prompts both of us to throw one as well. 10 minutes I about get my rod knocked out of my hand with a viscous strike. Fight to the boat my only keeper fish of the day, a 3.44lb Smallmouth. Jim later in the day would get his only keeper of the Day on a jig off a dock, a 3.46lb Smallie.

Day 2 I was paired up with Joe (lhpsnd). We had a fun day although fishing was just as tough. We ran many spots, threw many baits. Finally about noontime we were able to get some fish in the boat. Me 1st on drop shot a 2.38lb Largemouth, my only keeper of the day. Joe next with 2 more Largemouth for 3lbs combined. Thats it, Candlewood was a stingy b****.

Recap, Only one guy (Dan) out of 54 anglers put it together both days with good limits finishing with a total of 25.49lbs, well done. Next closest was 16lbs. My buddy John S had Tourney Lunker with a 5lb Largemouth, and also fished in 11th place. My buddy Fred wrapped up the top 12. I finished tied for 23rd with my 2 fish for 5.82lbs. Good experience, and looking forward to next year on Lake Champlain!

Decided to do 3 days of practice before the MA BASS Nation Fish-Offs, because I had never been here, and my buddy Had not been here in many years. Conditions could have been worse, lol. Water temps had dropped 10+ degrees in the last week and a half (64-67 all 5 days), Water levels dropping, very muddy, lots of pollen, and right smack in the middle of the fall transition. The bite was extremely tough. Typical Smallmouth baits just were not working. Marking fish everywhere, but few would bite.We each got a few fish each day, but random bites more than anything. My buddy hooked into a 5-1/2lb Largemouth on a spinner bait Wednesday at about 6:30pm his best of practice. My best of the 3 days was a 2-1/2lb Smallie first thing on Wednesday on a c-rig...only c-rig fish all week. Spinner Bait would get some fish each day. My thinking was the Tournament was gonna be a grind. Random catch of practice was My buddy got a Horn Pout on a 3/4oz football head with a 4" swimbait. It most of yawned and the bait landed in its mouth, lol.

Boy, Boone has been pounded the last number of years. The weed kills don't help either. Just stunned how bad this place is turning into. Chuck and I put in 5 hours(130ish to 730ish. Water temp was about 75, water looked terrible, grass was brown, and the bite stunk. If you think a reaction bite would work...nope try again. Now we both caught about a dozen bass each, but combined if we had 5 keepers, it was for 4.5lbs. 8-11in bass were around. Got a few keepers pitching into some pads, and also got a 12" bullhead the same way on a chigger chaw. Even the Pickerel bite was off, only catching 2 of them. This place needs a breather, christ!

Small crew today with 4 boats, but some damn good anglers. Water is messed up, between another weed kill, and get pounded this place is out of wack. I'm sure the blazing sun didn't help our cause either. Chuck and I caught at least 15 bass each, but the size was just not there this year.I caught fish on a worms, drop shot, chatter bait, and jig. Every boat had a limit with the Arrogant Anglers being up the rear with 7lb 12oz, Team R&R with 8lbs 13oz, Chuck and I had 11lb 15oz including Chuck's 3lb 14oz Lunker, and pulling off the upset with 13lb 11oz was Sam, and Shawn. Nice job everyone, nice to see you all!

As always I started off cranking. We targeted deep water so I busted out the king sized Strike King 10XD. I've been dying to get a fish on this thing but today was not the day, Sam started catching dinks on the drop shot. We both switched over to more conventional crankbaits and started cranking whatever grass we could find in the 6-10 ft range. Sam put the first 3 keepers in the well. As the sun got hotter and brighter we started to probe the pads. That's where Sam caught our biggest fish. We didn't weigh it but it looked to be over 4. It had a tail sticking out of it's mouth. A little while later we check on the fish and there's a huge blue gill floating in the well. It's amazing to see the size of their food. Our 4 pounder is now a heavy 3. LOL. We hit all the pads with only one more fish. Then we started to pound the shoreline. The fish were really tight to cover. Sam is pretty good at skipping a jig with a baitcaster. I was always afraid of the potential backlash so I never tried. But watching him catch fish after fish I decided it was time to try. Bam! I start catching fish. We culled a few times and at one time I culled the wrong fish and cost us 8 ounces. Fortunately I caught a fish that made it back up plus 8 ounces. We caught fish all day but couldn't find those 6 pounders.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Shawn for 5 hours (330ish-830ish). Beautiful afternoon, Sunny w/ little wind here and there. We pretty much made a lap around the main lake in the 5 hours we were out. Right off the bat my chatterbait get walloped. A nice 3lb 6oz Largemouth to start things off. Then no bite for 2 hours until Shawn get into a 2lber on a jig. Bite would be sporadic the rest off the night. Shawn over the next hour and a half or so got about 1/2 dozen Larry's including a 1-3/4lber. I finally get things going again with a 1-3/4lber that drills my chatterbait. A little later My chatterbait gets smoked again with a nice 2lb 9oz Larry. He ate it right up to the blade! Shawn would get a couple more smaller guys. We finished up the night at around the ramp/spillway area. Pitch a jig in, and again absolutely gets pounded, cross its eyes, and finish the night with best of the day. a 4lb beautiful, who took mine jig hook in the tongue. A little blood, but she swam away just fine, even splashing me on the way out. Our best 5 was about 14lbs. Good quality, healthy fish. Thanks again Shawn! "Keep Calm and Fish On"

Teamed up with my buddy Fred from Avid for this Tournament. We were one of 10 teams. Sunny, Windy, Hot day. 1st time to Sampsons for me, not that big. Any more boats, we would have been fishing on top of each other. Fred and I caught fish all day for the most part. Lots of small guys though. Our 5 fish limit at 10am was probably 4lbs, lol. We culled many times for ounces. Both of us catching atleast 15 bass each. Fred had our two better fish with a 2-1/4lb, and 1lb 5oz. I contributed with 3 rats, a 1lb 2oz, and two 1lb 1oz. Most of my fish were on a chatterbait, or a senko. Our final weight on our limit was 6.83lbs. Not sure what place we finished, but will update when it's posted. Lake Champlain - St. Albans, VT
7/26/2013 - 7/28/2013

Finally...I can add Champlain to my resume! For 3 days(Friday pre-fishing, and Club Tourneys Saturday and Sunday) I mainly had two goals. 1st was to beat my personal best Smallmouth weight of 2lb 9oz which I've had for like 3 years, and 2nd was to do well in the tournaments.

Friday: This was a pre-fishing day for my Buddy Dave and I. Loaded up his boat, and hit the road at 3am-ish to make the trek to St. Albans, VT. Arrived safely, and were on the water by 8am. Winds out of the North chopped up the water a little, but was manageable. 1st fish of the day would give me a new personal best, as a 3lb Smallie takes my drop shot. Drop shot got all my Smallmouth this day, some Perch and Rock Bass on a square bill, and my only Largemouth of the weekend on a senko. My practice day best 5 consisted 4 Smallmouth (3lbs, 2-1/2lb, 1-1/4lbs, and 1lb) and one 2-1/2lbs Largemouth for about 10-1/4lbs.

Saturday: This Club Tourney counted as the last for the 2013 season, which would decide AOY. What a beautiful day on the big lake! Slight winds from the south. More waves from boat traffic than anything. My usual spot as Co-Angler. Today I fish with Paul who is always near the top of the standings. We basically fished 5 spots all day. 1st 4 were his, last spot was mine. 2 hours on the 1st spot yielded him a keeper he would later cull, and me a 2-1/4lb Smallie on a C-rig. 2nd spot was where most of the action came Paul limited out on this spot, culling once or twice. I picked up 2 more Smallies (1-1/2lber on a dropshot, and my biggest of the day a 2-3/4lb Smallie on a spider grub). 3rd spot gave Paul a nice Largemouth that was a heavy 2. 4th spot got me my last keeper Smallie of the day at about 1lb. Last spot with 20 mins left, Paul upgraded again with a another decent 2+lb Largemouth. He finished in 4th place with 13.63lbs, just enough to win AOY. I finished in 7th with 7.46lbs. 1st place was 14.51lbs, with a 4.17lb Lunker Smallmouth. On a side note, I had a pretty good year as Co-Angler, finishing 3rd overall in the 2013 standing against some great competition.

Sunday: This Club tourney counted as the 1st of the 2014 season. Fished with Fred today. Winds howled out of the South East creating 2-3ft swells. Tough on the body, ouch! It makes it tough to fish spots, or even stay close to spots. We took a good pounded running back to weigh-in. We grinded it out making the best of it though. Fred had 1 of 2 limits today finishing 2nd place was 12.38lbs. I had only 2 Smallies today for 5.76lb giving me 5th place, however one of them was the tourney lunker @ 4.01lbs, another new personal best in 3 days. Also caught a 4lb Pike on a dropshot with 6lb test during the tourney.

After work dodging some rain, and traffic. Fished about 45 minutes. Calm weather, current was moving due to the recent rain during the early afternoon. Threw a buzz bait for 15 minutes with nothing doing. Finished off the night with a drop shot. The bite was different than normal aggressiveness. Had to drag it out of the main current a bit, and let it soak for 15-20 seconds before they would bite. I got 3 Smallies in the 3/4lb range.

This was the 4th and last tournament for this trail, this year. Top 10 boater, and co-angler T.O.C. placement to be determined at the end of the day. Draw at the ramp gets me a Boater by the name of Mark Burgess (Former B.A.S.S. Elite Series guy, among many other accomplishments). Super nice guy, very friendly in general, and very open with tips/advice, etc. One thing I notice immediately as I scanned Mark's rod set-ups on the front deck is I had pretty much most of the same kind of baits tied on already too (Buzz Bait, Craw, Shaky Head, Swim Bait, Shallow Crank). Water temps were 83-86 all day, weather was warm, humid, and overcast most of the day until the rain showed up 2:30 all cooled everyone down.

I won't give away any of Mark's spots, but on a tough day he put together a nice limit, culling 3 or 4 times. I struggled only putting 1 keeper in the boat all day. Even with that I had a good day, as it always good to fish with someone new and learn more. When scales closed Mark had 10.91lbs for a 5th place finish, I had a dissapointing 0.83lbs for 12th place. Winning Co-angler had 9.99lbs, and winning boater had 14.12lbs. 3lb Lunker on the Co-angler side, 4.31lbs on the boater side.

So good and bad as I wrap this up. The bad, I had an opportunity with a decent bag for Co-Angler of the year, and I didn't execute. Can't blame anyone but myself. The good, I fished hard all year. I had a solid year. With my one fish today I believe I got 2nd place overall for the year, as appose to 6th place last year. Also qualifying for the T.O.C. 2 years in a row against some great competition. Always learning experience that Ill take with me in future tourney's, starting with Champlain in 2 weeks!

I hadn't been out surfcasting yet this year. The girlfriend had some family in town, and I was asked to take her mother's husband Paul fishing. Yup, no problem! Check the tides, and after some research I game plan on a spot I've been looking at for about a year, but hadn't tried yet. At the water at 7am, and 2 hours left on the out going tide. Set-up quickly two 10 foot surf rods, baited with calms. It took Paul a couple cast to get a handle of casting a set-up that big, but he learned quick. 10 minutes in Paul get the 1st bite, and get a 20" schoolie Striper, his 1st ever. We both rebait, and recast. Another 10 minutes later Paul get wacked again! He sets the hook, and the drag tells me he is into a better fish. His 1st Keeper Striper at 30" 8-1/2lbs, he was so excited, and so was I that the game plan was really working out. About 10 minutes later I finally get on the board with a schoolie Striper at 18", my 1st of the year. The next hour plus was spent feeding the crabs, with no more bites, and we wrapped it up at 9am as we were out of bait. Good stuff, and I definitely haven't done enough surfcasting the last few years. Need to change that!

Vin and I put in an hour and a half after work (7pm-8:30pm). Water is high like everywhere else. I got my only fish of the night 10 minutes in, a nice 2lber on a senko. Vin put 4 more in the boat over the rest of the trip, a 1lber, the big one of the night at 2-3/4lbs, a 2lber, and 1-3/4lber all flipping pads. Not bad, a 9-1/2lb limit in an hour and a half, I take that all day long!

2nd of 2 tournaments for me this weekend. This was the TBF's(The Bass Federation, MA branch of FLW) 2nd Annual Club vs Club Tournament. TBF does an 8 fish limit in team tourney's. Paul and I were 1 of 3 teams that represented Avid Anglers. 11 or 12 teams total I believe. This is smaller place with a terrible ramp, so it was good for the smaller turnout. Water had decent visability, but wasn't super clear. I think every fish we caught was on a shakey head, and most in the 8-12 foot range. Paul caught all the good fish, I chipped in with a few to help get the limit. 1st place was 16plus lbs, Paul and I took 2nd was 14.54lbs. The Avid team of Mike, and Fred had there 8 fish limit for 11 plus pounds. The 3rd Avid team Ed, and Dave had 6 fish for 9 plus lbs. Good fun!

This was my 1st of 2 tourneys this weekend, and the 3rd of 4 for this Pro-Am trail this season. In attendance 14 Boaters, and 12 Co-Anglers. Draw at the ramp got boater Stephen, a fellow MAFFer (aka jutterbugging). The already high water levels were about a 1/2 feet higher than last weekend. Stephen didn't have chance to pre-fish, and was happy, and willing to try my game plan. I started fishing a 3/8oz Boag Hog Brush Jig, and 5 minutes in my jig get clobbered! Hammer a hookset, and bring aboard the eventual lunker on the co-angler side with a 4.24lb Largemouth. I abandon the jig shortly after that, cause I couldn't keep the loose grass off it. I switch to a buzzbait, and Stephen was throwing one too already. In the next couple hours I had picked up two 1lbers, and 3/4lber, a few shorts, and Stephen put two in the livewell also. We both missed several bites on the buzzbait as well. During all this Stephen is dealing with trolling motor issues, blowing fuses every so often, but doing all he can to keep us moving. When the sun broke through late morning the buzzbait bite suffered, although I buzzed a flooded brush pocket and something sizable moved. Followed it right up with a senko on its head, and Larry crushed it. Bring aboard another good one to get my limit with a 3-3/4lber. At this point the trolling motor was completely cooked, but very unselfish Stephen kept me fishing any way possible, ultimately sacrificing his day. On and off the big motor to position me as best he could, fishing when he could. A little later a score another decent Largemouth on the senko culling out a 3/4lber for this 1lb 15oz which would give me my final weight. Stephen would get one more 1 plus lber toward the end of the day giving him a final 3 fish bag at 3.39lbs. When the scales had closed, and everything was tallied, the winning boater had 11.71lbs w/ a 4.84lb lunker, and I had won the Co-Angler side with 11.92lbs w/ a 4.24lb lunker. Thanks Stephen for everything, look forward to fishing with you again. Next Pro-Am, Lakeville in Mid July

With a B.A.S.S. pro-am coming up at Quaboag, and me never been there, Jay (AKA JWall, Boag Hog Baits) invited me aboard to do a little pre-fishing. This was also 1st time Jay and I have fished together. It was another hot day, with a little more wind in the mix. We fish from about 7:30am-12:30pm. But it was more Jay showing me the pond, and river to get a better idea for it. The bite was inconsistent, but we did catch some keepers. Flipping got most of them, but who knows how the bite will be next weekend. Jay had 6 or 7 fish I think with the biggest about 1-1/2lbs, and I had 4 fish with my biggest at about 1-1/4lbs. Good times with good guy! Jay thanks again, we will have to get out again sometime soon!
