6/1/2013

Club tournament today on this hot muggy day. You know its going to be a busy day on the water when someone is water skiing at 6:30am. Water temps were 72-78, clarity was cloudy due to pollen, wind, boat traffic, etc. I draw boater Dean, a newer guy in the club, and his 2013 Ranger. No complaints here, lol. The bite tough, and inconsistent, and after noontime the recreational boat traffic was brutal. But everyone weighed fish, and there were 7 limits out of 10 anglers. Dean and I caught fish multiple ways, all over the lake. Senkos early, dropshot late morning, Dean had a few on a frog, and I got a 2lb Smallie on a jig at about 2:30 to finish out my limit. When the scales closed 1st place had 12.18lbs, Dean had 2nd with 10.48lbs including a 3.87lb Lunker Largemouth, and I finished 8th with my 6.38lb limit.

Once again hit up Quannapowitt for 2 hours (6:15pm-8:15pm) after work with Angry Vinny. Water Temps up to 73, and water level up a bit as well. Pads, grass really starting to come in too. We worked 2 stretches of shoreline for an hour each. First stretch Vinny bags a monster Calico on a spinner bait weighing in at 1lb 5oz, biggest Ive ever seen. I follow that up with my only fish of the night, a 1-3/4lb Largemouth that wacked my squarebill. Vinny got 3 more keeper Bass on the 2nd stretch, 1-1/4lber, 1-3/4lber, and a 2lb 1oz. 4 bass for 6-3/4ish lbs in 2 two hours is pretty good in my eyes. Fun night as always.

Vinny and I decided put put some extended time into what to seemed to me to be a tough fishery in Quannapowitt. Just the water color alone is like a milk shake, and can barely see a bait inches down in the water. We put in 10 hours over 2 days (Sat. 1pm-5pm)(Sun. 7am-1pm) Water temps were 68-70 all weekend. The wind at times made it tough on us considering we need a new trolling motor badly. It barely working at half its power. Anyways we made the best of it. I know also think this place is better than it shows, but still tough.

Day 1: Saturday 1pm-5pm. Wind on the main lake was tough, so spent more time in a few coves.Pitching some flooded brush, Vinny strikes 1st with a nice 3lber. 5 minutes later he get nailed again by one just as big, if not bigger, but it shakes the hook. Finally at the end of the outing I get a 2lber on a jig. It hit as I was swimming back to the boat to make another cast.

Day 2: Sunday 7am-1pm. Wind is much more managable today. We started in the same cove we had success in yesterday, and within 10 minutes Vin had a 2lb 3oz, and I had a 1lb 13oz in the boat. Later Vin picked-up a 2lb 5oz, and a 1lber. Later in the day working down a few shorelines I get a 2-1/4lber, and Vin get the biggest of the day on a spinnerbait at 2lb 10oz. I also lost a few quality fish today in the 2lb-3lb range, one a chatterbait at the boat, another on a squarebill that I never changed the stock hooks out. Dohhhh! Still with a limit in the 11-1/4lb range with room to grow is a nice day in my eyes.

Lower turn-out for the 2nd Pro-Am with only 12 boater, 12 co-anglers. Draw at the Ramp (Flint Pond Ramp) got me a Boater named Dennis, awesome guy, were had a blast busting each others chops like we were friends for years. Weather was odd, mild up to 70 degrees, with gusting winds building througout the day, and it down poured for 10 minutes too. This was my 1st time fishing this water, and I've never heard it spoken very highly of. I caught plenty of fish, just mostly the wrong species, or shorts. This place is infested with Rock Bass! At the end of the day Dennis had 3 keepers for 3.29lbs, and I had one good keep just shy of 3lbs on a spinner bait. That 2.99lb Largemouth was enough to put me in 5th Place. Winning Co- Angler had 8.44lbs w/ a 3.90 Lunker, and Winning boater had 10.10lbs w a 3.27 Lunker. Next is Quaboag in June!

Traffic sucked friday after work. So side tracked to Twin Coves to give it another look. A lot different then 5 weeks ago. Pads, grass, and muck are coming in fast, no surprise there. There were some smaller bass on beds, bite they were not holding on there beds. Managed a 1lb 6oz on a senko off a cluster of pads. One better than none.

Out of work early on a rare occasion. Saw Shawn was heading out on the water, so I ask to join him, and he obliged. His Beaver Fever outfitted rig is slick! We fished about 3-1/2 hours (4pm-7:30pm) expecting rain the whole time that never came. Just gusty winds from time to time. Fishing wasn't outstanding, but it was steady for the most part once we got a little pattern going. Most were caught on some form of Shallow crankbait, Shawn getting the biggest one on that technique at about 1-1/2lbs. I lost one about 1-3/4-2lbs on a scatter rap. I got a few on the jig up to 1-1/4lbs. The biggest of the night came as we motored to a cove, I spotted a cluster of big rocks, with some stick-ups around. Before Shawn could put the trolling motor in water I had cast, and had the fish on. That short fat Largemouth weighed in a 2lb 13oz. All in all it was a fun night, with us catch about a dozen Bass each, with a couple eager perch mixed in, and our best 5 probably was in the 8lb range. Fun night, thanks again Shawn!

No problem John. I can cross you off of my Maff members to fish with list. Now here's my version.
Well John missed the rain. I got there about a half an hour before him and it down poured on me for about 10 minutes. It didn't rain after John got there so maybe it's him. Then all that stuff that he said happened. A common practice among fishermen is to try each others setups. He hands me a denalli rod with a shimano curado and I immediately notice how freakin light it is. Then I notice it's righty. I fish lefty so it was weird. I make a cast, crank the scatter rap and bam! Fish on. LOL I caught a dink. That's one sweet setup. I think I'm going to make a no casting until the trolling motor is in the water rule.

Afterwork gave this place another chance for about 40-45mins. Never had great luck here, and tonight was no different. Trouters were lined up on the northern shoreline, so went to the south shoreline around were the car topper ramp is. Tons of panfish and small bass sunning in the shallow. Only managed 1 chunky 1-1/4lber off a lay down on a brush jig. One better than none.

Vinny and I got an invite to head out on a buddy Dave's boat. He just upgraded to a 24ft Center Console Whaler, nice rig. Still early in the season, so we were not sure what to expect. Water temps were 47-48, nice day in the mid 50's, but the ocean was a little rough. On the water by 7am, we start fishing for Tautog. I had never caught one before so I was game. Bait of choice was live crabs, and cut Squid. There was a 1/2 dozen boats anchored on the hot spot, we anchored just outside of them and it showed. They we pulling them up one after the other. We were lucky to have caught the 1 each we did before we ran out of crabs. After that we attempted to see if any Stripers were around, jigging, trolling, swimbaits, no luck. Last we checked a fluke spot, but its still way early for them. Called it a day a 2pm, crossing another species off the list.

I had the pleasure of fishing with Kevin today(Chevin37). Hit up Boone with the plan of fishing for some bragging rights, then chowing down of some burgers, and dogs. Washed down with some suds, what great day it was. Weather was great, many laughs had. Fishing was tough though. Bass are in that in between prespawn/spawn funk. Kevin and I both caught about 8 Bass each, with 3 Keepers for each of us. Most of my were on a senko, Kevin had a mix. Our best 5 was a tick under 6lbs. Not much for size today. Top bragging rights went to a 9+lb bag, an 8+lb right behind that, with a 3lb lunker, and a bag that was 7-1/2+lbs were ahead of us. Boone was a stingy b**** today! Till next time boys!

Headed to Dudley after work to check out my usual shoreline spots. Not much to report. Lots of panfish off of Mansion Beach, nothing doing there though. The point off Doran Rd, get me only one 18" Pickerel on a jerkbait. The Cartopper ramp area is all mucked up, typical for this time of year. Got 2 more Pickerel there. Water temp still feel pretty cold, but should warm up quickly now.

Nice turn-out for the 1st B.A.S.S. Pro-Am of the season, 25 boaters, and 20 Co-Anglers. 40 degree air temps at take-off, water temps were 50-51 all day, and the clarity was not like it usually is. Wind had it clouded up pretty good. My usual spot as Co-angler, and draw at the ramp got me a boater name Steve and his Triton. Nice guy, cool thing about this trail is most of this guys are very nice. Learning from new people is good in my book. Wind was tough all day, made it near impossible to stay on a spot, or throw a finesse bait. Steve got only one keeper Smallie at 1.38lbs, but did get a Pickerel that had to be 6lbs plus, looked like it ate a boot! I grinded the day away mostly throw a square bill, rattle trap, spinner bait, and a jerkbait. Jerkbait only got me some perch. Finally at about noon time I tied on a Shallow Shad Rap. On a side note I gotta mention the gear I was throwing this on, Rod was a Denali Signature Jerkbait 6'8"Casting rod with a soft tip, Reel was Curado 50e, with 10lb Flouracarbon had very little problem throwing this 1/4oz crank into the wind! Love this set-up! Anyway 10 minutes after I started throwing the Shad Rap, I get on the board with a decent Smallie at 2lbs 6oz (My Biggest of the day). A little later on a Monster Pike slams my lure, fight him to the boat, Steve tried a one handed net scoop, but the Pike rolled out of the net and stripped everything but one treble hook. Dohh!!! I wanted a picture of that beast, had to be 30 plus inches, and 10lbs anyway, Real thick! Later on I picked up one more Smallie that would give me my final bag of 3.5lbs, and 9th place out of 20 Co-Anglers. Fun but tough day overall, but got valuable points. Some nice fish weighed in with 2 Largemouth over 6lbs, 2 more over 5lbs, Smallie over 4lbs. 1st place boater had 16.70lbs, and 1st place Co-Angler had 12.61lbs. Next Stop Quinnsig 5/11.

Sorry guys, not giving this one up yet. I know some of you know this place, but its super small, and I want to put some time in here to see what its capable of producing. Traffic sucked so it took me forever to get here, leaving only a half hour of fishing time. Water is stained, bottom in the area I tried is mucky. Tried a jig for a bit, then switched to a small jerkbait. Steady slow retrieve got 3 Bass, all small 1/2lb range. It's a start, but looking for better.

I was in Waltham to watch the Girlfriend play in a volleyball tourney yesterday. After I put in a couple hours there, I stopped at the "Twin Coves" for about an hour. Mostly threw a black/blue 1/4oz jig. Wind was gusty at times, but nice overall. Started in the right side cove, working the right shoreline. About 20 minutes in felt a slight tap, and line starting going out...WHAM! Hookset, I knew it wasn't really big right away, but it was the 1st Bass of the season at 1lb 5oz. Headed out on the middle pennisula, worked my way from point, all the way down the right shoreline of the left cove. From there I saw a stick about 50 feet out, about 4 inches out of the water. Gotta be some kind of structure attached to that. 2nd cast to it, felt a good bite, line take off...WHAM! Cross it eyes, and knew it was a little better than the 1st one. As Im poppong my jig out of its mouth I notice a tail in its mouth. This gready one was still working on getting down what I think was a shad, when it hit my jig. That explains it fat belly. 2lb 5oz was it weight, and with that I called it a day

Finally some ice! Hit the 4" of Ice today with Vin, Pat (the B-day boy), and Nin. Vin started at 8am while I ran to get some more bait. He calls me at 8:30 saying flags are ripping already, get extra bait! I get there at 9am, and Vin already has 9 Bass(Included a 4-1/2lber, and a Pickerel. Finish setting up more traps, and re-baiting others and an onslaught of flags till about 3:30am was on. I must of ran around 5 miles on the ice! Double, triple flags all day! Vin finished with 40 Bass, with his lunker being that 4-1/2lber. Also 5 Pickerel, Including a 4lber, and a few chunky Perch. Nin had about 10 Bass, and a couple Pickerel. Pat also had about 10 Bass, and lunker of the day with 5lb 11oz tank, and a couple Pickerel. My day had 30 Bass, with 3lber as my lunker, and a 3lb Pickerel. Most Bass were in the 2lb range. Crazy stuff, we went through 5 dozen shiners today, and at times we could not keep up with the flags, and rebaiting, etc, lol. Now Im ready for spring!

The action was a Chunky Pickerel that engulfed a Lucky Craft Pointer. Better than nothing, especially this time of year. We might be ice fishing by the weekend with this cold snap!

Haven't been on the water in a month, so I was excited to get out for a few hours 2pm-4pm and try a couple of my new Denali Rods, and my new 2013 Abu SX. Very happy with the feel of the Denali's, and that Abu SX is awesome! Fishing was slow over all, and water level could be worse for this time of year, but it turned out to be a beautiful day though. Started with a spinnerbait, 1st cast got a 18" Pickerel. Couple more followers on the spinnerbait, and rattle trap. Jig got me a 1lber, and I lost another one that get me tied up in a tree. My Saturday had opened up, so I hit up Chuck to if he wanted to get out on the water somewhere. He was down, and we hit up a private honey hole of his in his car topper for an afternoon session(1pm to 5pm). Air temps didn't get above 50, but when the sun was out it was nice. Wind couldn't make up its mind, changing direction all day. There was an "Arrogant" sighting when we started fishing, but they were heading out as we getting a feel for things. I asked Chuck if he gave them the evil eye to scare them off, but he wouldn't admit to anything, lol. I think they caught all the lunkers before we got there too! lol. Jerkbait, Spinner bait, and Jigs all worked today. We easily caught 15 Largemouth each. We both probably had our best 5 for 10-1/2lb-11lbs, and combined were around 12lbs-13lbs. 2-1/2lbs was probably the biggest most were in the 1-3/4lb-2lb range, and I dropped a 3lber at the front of the boat, dohh. Throw a bunch of Perch in there on top of the Bass and I call it a great day. Chuck always a pleasure to get out and fish with you. I look forward to the next time we can make it happen again.

This was my last "scheduled" tournament for 2012, but 2nd to count toward Avid's 2013 season. Four previous tournament visits here hadn't left super excited about this one, but that's all part of the game. Gotta be able to be consistent wherever you fish. At my usual club spot as Co-Angler, and I had boater Mike today. Weather started as misting, but very humid. Wind slowly developed all day, and Sun was out by 12:30 which didn't help the bite at the end of the day. Water temp was about 59 all day, and the water level was down over a foot.

So the area we would fish most of the morning had bait around with depth range of 1ft-6ft, with plenty of big rocks (I know rocks in Watuppa, big surprise, lol). Mike had a keeper about 30 mins in while retrieving his brushhog. That keyed me that a reaction bite might be what would work. Tried a chatterbait, and buzzbait for hour with no results. When the wind had started to build, I picked up my white spinnerbait, and that's when it all came together. I had 3 keepers with-in a half hour, which convinced Mike he should be throwing the same thing. we both had our limits by 930-ish, Culling by 10am. Also in mix were monster Pickerel, none smaller than 2-1/2lbs, mostly 3lb-4lb range! Every fish we caught showed signs of feeding up well. About 11am, after culling 4 times I would have my final bag. Mike upgraded twice toward the end of the day. We both caught about 15 Bass, and 10 Pickerel each. Now this does sway my opinion of this place, but its nice to have a productive day like this. Mike ended up 5th place I think with 8-1/4lbs. 1st Place 9.77lbs, 2nd was 9.60lbs w/ a lunker 3.61lbs, I rounded out the top 3 with 9.39lbs. Not bad for the back of the boat! I'm just happy to finish the season being consistent

1st year fishing the Fed Nation trail, and I finished 6th overall on the Co-Angler side qualifying me for for this T.O.C. The line-up was the top ten Boaters, and top ten Co-Anglers. Draw at the ramp got me a Boater named Bill, nice older fella. Water temp had dropped 8-9 degrees since last Saturday. Air temps were under 30 degrees to start the day, brrrrrr! Line guides were icing up for the 1st hour or so. Bill caught a bass on his 1st cast, and I got a 3lb pickerel on a drop shot, then nothing for like 3 hours. We ran to another spot, and Bill gets his 2nd around 9am-ish. So far drop shot, jig, shakey head, and squarebill are not getting it done for me. Wind had picked-up a bit, so at the next spot I start throwing a white spinnerbait. I pick-up two 1lb Largemouth, and Bill gets his 3rd. Next spot we both start throwing a spinnerbait, Bill gets one, I get a short, and 1lb 1oz. Bill switched to a chatterbait and gets two decent ones, culling out one, for one for the small ones. I too switch too the chatterbait and pick-up a 1lb 7oz. Later in the same spot I get my limit with a 1-1/2lber. Last spot of the day I get a 1-1/4lber to cull out a 1lber, and Bill would cull 2 to 3 times toward the end of the day. Tough day had some heavy hitters shaking there heads at the end when all was said and done. Not sure what the final weight on the Boater side was, I think around 10-11lbs, and Bill had 7-1/4lbs for maybe 3rd,4th or 5th. On the Co-Angler side, 1st was 13lbs, 2nd was 11.05lbs, 3rd was 6.58lbs, and I was 4th with my Limit for 6.27lbs. Just couldn't find a kicker fish today, but I feel pretty good too finish with a consistent effort.

Warm, and very windy in the afternoon. A couple things worked, but we couldn't find a good, consistent pattern. Pickerel were very aggressive, and the Bluegill/Sunfish wouldn't lay off the drop shot at the end of the day. When all was said and done, Paul had 4 Keeper Largemouth about 5-5-1/2lbs, also he had a couple come unbuttoned, and about 10 Pickerel. I had one 2lb Smallmouth on a spinnerbait, 1-1/2lb Largemouth on a jig for my keepers. A short Larry and Sally, 4 Hefty Pickerel, 8 Bluegill/Sunfish(all in about 10 Minutes) rounded out my day. Hopefully this weekend will be better!!!

This is the 1st Avid club tournament for the 2013 season for us. 1st time I fished here in 2010 in a spawn tourney, and I got a big goose egg. Now I know I've developed and grown as an angler, but that was still in the back of my mind. Anyway the the water temps were about 68-69 all day. Weather started real overcast, with a breeze. By noontime the wind laid down, and the lake was glass, but also shut off the already slow bite. Sun was out by 1pm and everyone struggled the rest of the day. My usual position as Co-Angler, I drew Wade as my boater. Ignition problems wouldn't let his boat stay running, but luckily we weren't going far for where we fish ed most of the day. Wade had his only 3 fish(1 largemouth, 2 smallies) by 7:45am. I struggled most of the morning. Starting with a spinnerbait, and tube drawing nothing. Drop shot got me a Pickerel, and a chunky Sunfish. Back to the spinnerbait some Yellow Perch. Tube, jig, c-rigged all nothing! Finally about 11am frustrated I picked up a squarebill. 1st cast, 1lb Smallie! 10 mins later, another 1 lb Smallie!, 20 minutes around the corner, my biggest of the day, a 2lb 3oz Smallie smokes the squarebill! 10 minutes later, another Smallie drills the squarebill, does an big jump, and spits the hook 10 ft from the boat! DOHHHH! it was atleast a 2-1/2lber. not long after was when the wind laid down, sun came out, and killed the bite. About 1pm we moved out to a hump on the main lake, and I was able to pick up a 1lb 3oz Smallie on the dropshot. 1st place was the only limit with 12lbs+, 2nd was 2 fish 8-1/4lbs including lunker(4.88lb Larry on a Boag Hog Jig!), 3rd was 4 fish with 7lbs+, and I came in 4th out of 15 with 4 Smallies at 5.39lbs. The one that came off would have put me in the money, but it happens. Just happy to start the Avid season on a good note!

Then the surprise element shows its face in the form of Blue Dog Shark in the 4ft-10ft range that would be around the boat all day, everywhere we went. So not only fighting your fish, but alot of fighting to keep the Sharks eating your fish, or jigs, etc. They were relentless! Away way, I finally hook up on the jig, which worked well for most today, and it feels like a tank. Finally get it to the surface, and its a double! With 14lb Hake, and a 7lb Pollock... with a shark right behind it!!! It knocked my Pollock off the hook, but we got it with the gaff, and it tried to take a chunk out of my Hake, but we gaffed that away quick enough that the Shark only left a few teeth mark!! Crazy stuff! Vin hooked into a tuna for about 15mins, that finally broke off. He also hooked into a few Sharks, the longest fight going 25 minutes, before it broke off under the boat! And both of us were into good sized fish that the Sharks would eat before we could get to the surface. Brutal! Vin wound up with probably a dozen Pollack with biggest going 20lbs, and a keeper Cod. I had the 14lb Hake, 7lb, and 5lb Pollacks, and a couple small rat Pollacks, and a tiny foot long Cod

Boston Harbor - Deer Island

I fished this charity Tournament (For Michael J Fox's charity) for the 1st time. Had a few rides fall though, so I ended up fishing with a buddy in his 10ft Inflatable Dingy, cause his 27ft Boat was not ready. Tight fit, but we had in work. Mostly soaked chunk bait of Pogies, Mackerel, Clams, and Seaworms. Throw topwater and only had a few fish swirl at it, but no takers. Being in the inflatable left us limited to where we could go, limited what we could bring for gear. But all in all, we held our own considering I haven't touched my saltwater gear all year. Ended the outing with 2 Skates(hate Skates, lol, pains in the ass!)about 15-16" on seaworms. Also got my biggest Bluefish so far at 6-1/4lbs, which gave my 2nd place by less than 3lbs in that category. Winner Striper was a 40lber, and rumor was that the charity raised 12k-14k for the day.
