7/28/11 - Northshore Honey Holes

Somewhere on the Northshore, MA
7/28/2011

Haven't been to the honey holes in a while, so I hit them up after work. Nice warm night, with a breeze at times. 1st spot I fished 2 sections. Mostly threw a Rage Frog, with a senko mixed in. Senko got me a 10" Bass, and the Rage Frog got me a 3/4lb, and a 1/2lb Bass and several slaps at my frog. Actions slowed so I went to the 2nd spot. Water conditions looked terrible, almost like a milky color, when this place is usually clear. Anyway, 1st cast with the senko...I lift my line, and thought I was stuck...until I felt the head shake! Oh baby Nice Largemouth Bass 21-1/2" 4-1/2lb. Was a little skinny, but still a nice fish.

Ill keep this short. Went to NH to see the family this past weekend. Only got 2 hours to fish from shore on Sunday morning (9am-11am). Great water clarity, but the water level was down. I could see some Smallies but they were real skittish. Nothing on the shakeyhead, tube, bitsy jig, senko, or jerkbait. Only takers were 3 Sunfish, and 1 Rock Bass on the inline spinner.

Heard Pond - Sudbury, MA
7/19/2011

Made 2 stops tonight after work. Started at Dudley Pond at the small cartopper access. Shoreline brush is growing in making casting a little tougher. Some muck and weed growing spotty in the water suface. Got one 11" Bass early on a senko. Threw a Rage Frog most of the time though, and got a few blow-ups that failed to hook-up. After an hour there I went over to Heard Pond. Water level is probably down a foot from two weeks ago. Again I threw the Rage Frog most of the time. Got one 1lb Bass out of the pads. Even threw a senko at the pad edges at the end of the night, and still nothing else. Heard has been real quiet this year. Usual good for a handful of bass in the 2lb-5lb range over the course of the season. Slim pickings this year so far.

Quickie 30 minute trip afterwork. Warm, with some wind. Inline Spinner like usual in this spot. Tallied one 5" Sunfish, and two Smallies (6" and 11" 1/2lber). Then I lost my lure, so I called it a night. Dohhh!

Finally got the repaired prop back for Vinny's boat. So we put that back together, and things look good expect the big piece of skeg missing, ouch. Decided to try Sluice because it was close. Initial thoughts, Steep Ramp that drops off unevenly but managable, Not much parking. Being 50 acres it a pretty small place, but its got some real deep spots 50ft-60ft. Nice day, fought the wind most of the time. Some areas were better protected than others. Lots of floating docks, some laydowns, sporadic vegatation. Water temp was 80-81 degrees, water clarity wasnt the best, but better than we expected. Tried to find a few different patterns, got a few off docks on senkos. Nothing on the shakeyhead, or poppers. Vinny got a few suspended fish on shallow cranks. But the main pattern seemed to be the areas that had overhanging brush, the Bass were holding tight to, Shaded areas produced better than sunny areas. Fishing back through the boat ramp area Vinny had ten Bass in the 10"-12" on the night already, and I had six Bass with two 1lbers mixed in, I tossed my jig to some over hanging brush, and THUMP, Fish on! Vin gets it in the net. Pictures, and than weigh this nice 4lb Sluice Largemouth, thank you! While I was getting the truck Vinny catches two more bass in a couple minutes. Lots of cookie cutter fish, but it was nice to see the fatty at the end of the night. Interesting place, Im sure we'll will try it again at some point.

Fished about 45 minutes after work. Hot, slow session. Not being unpacked from my Saturday tourney, I didnt have much with me. Threw the inline spinner the whole time. Nothing special, ended the night with a chunky 9" Yelow Perch, 12" Pickerel(1st time catching one here), and a 6" Smallie.

7/9/2011

Launched from Lee's Mills ramp for a 7am. My usual co-angler status for a club tourney. At take-off conditions are different than yesterday. About 8-10 degrees warmer, bright sun, and the water is glass. Hit the 1st spot that produced the bigger topwater fish yesterday, and right away the boater Dave hooks up with a short, and then I get a monster blow-up on my popper but dont connect, and then nothing for atleast an hour. Topwater bite died, so we move on. Dave's working that popper, and Im dropshotting in about 8ft around some cabbage and I hook up with my 1st Largemouth about 1lb. That spot goes dry, so we move to the spot we got the most dropshot production, and right away I hook-up with a 1-1/4lb Largemouth. Then the wind whips up, so we anchor up to stay on the spot ,then its Pickerel, almost 2lb Largemouth, 3lb Pickerel, Pickerel, 1-3/4lb Largemouth, Pickerel, and then it slowed. Fight the wind the whole time, we try some other spots, Dave hook his only fish of the day 1-1/2lb Largemouth. Try some docks, get some bites but no hook-ups. Head back to the dropshot spot after a couple hours, anchor up, and 1st cast a 1-1/2lb Largemouth to finish my limit. Beside a couple more pickerel each that would be it for the day.Finished my day with 3 Bluegill, 6 Pickerel, and my limit of Largemouth. 1st place yielded 13 plus lbs, 2nd had 11 plus lbs, and I rounded out the top 3 with 7.33lbs. Winnipesaukee is a nice looking body of water, and look forward to seeing more of it in the future.

7/8/2011

Launched out of the Lee's Mills Ramp for a day (7am to 5pm) of pre-fishing for the next days club tourney. Day started overcast, with a little ripple in the water with a temp of 71-75. By the end of the day the hazy sun, and humidity joined us. The boater Dave I fished with quickly found the popper bite was on. I tried a rage frog, and buzzbait but the fish like inconsistent retrieve of the popper. Tried a hand full of spot with the same pattern with varied success. I hooked my 1st Winni Largemouth(about 1lb) on the shakeyhead. We tried dropshotting in some spots and had some success, also got my best Largemouth of the day(1-1/4lb), and found a dropshot bait that would serve me well if this bite held into tomorrow. But popper bite was the ticket today as the Dave would have had a limit of about 6lbs to 6-1/2lbs, my 3 keepers would got 3lbs to 3-1/2lbs. Also caught 2 nonkeeper Largemouth on the dropshot, and shakeyhead, about 6 Pickerel on the dropshot, popper, and shakeyhead, a 7" Smallie on the dropshot, and 3 chunky Bluegill on the popper. Fun day overall for my 1st time fishing Winnipesaukee!

Had 30 minutes to kill before heading home. Saw Mario aka "Bassterrorist", he must of had 1st shift today as he was heading out when I arrived. A little windy but nice night. Water level was up a little from the last couple of weeks. Of course I was throwing the inline spinner. Just seem to have better success at this spot over over baits/lures. Picked up two Yellow Perch 6" and 7", and also A nice Smallie that hit my lure like a freight train, bending the wire and tearing up the feathered hook. Time the retire that Rooster Tail. The Smallmouth was definately my biggest from this spot @ 15-1/2" 1lb 9oz and full of fight.

Wow, what a fun night! Fished after work from about 6pm to 830pm. Nice hot calm night. Set-up one rod with some store bought carp/catfish bait, unfortunately nothing doing in that department. Started throwing a Rage Frog for a while ,and off and on the rest of the night with no action. Everything was on the senko, and the inline spinner tonight. There must have a school of white perch around cause they were all over the inline spinner. Finished the night with 12 White Perch(probably atleast another 6 that came of at the shore line) all between 7" to 4", 1 6" Yellow Perch, 1 7" Blue Gill, 1 18" Pickerel, and 4 Largemouth(1/2lb, 3/4lb, 1lb and 1lb 3oz). Didnt get the quality Bass I was hoping for, but I still had a blast.

Put in about an hour and a half at one of the honey holes before I had to go(3pm-430pm). Hidden enough where the wind wasnt to bad. Tried a frog for a while in between throwing a senko. Only one bite on the frog, about a 1lb Largemouth launched for it but missed. The Senko scored me 7 Larry's Biggest @ 1lb 1oz.

Had a half hour to kill before a friend B-day Party. What ever chemical trreatment they have been doing here the last couple years is really keeping the weeds down for sure. Just fished a senko at the ramp near the boat house. Waht ever chemical trreatment they have been doing here the last couple years is really keeping the weeds down for sure. Got alot of tail bites. Finally hooked up with a 3/4lber Larry and called it a night.

I put in some time at Heard Pond after work. Water was very calm. Worked a Spro Popper Frog off and on all night in the pads without even a sniff. Tried a buzzbait, and a Popper with no takers. Inline spinner got me a Bluegill. Finally to wrap up the night I got a 1-1/2lb Largemouth to take a senko for a ride.

Checked out the couple honey holes after work. Lots of growth coming in, and some algae bloom going on. Wind was gusty at times. Settled in at the 2nd spot for about an hour. Started with a tube, but too much green slime to be affective in this area. Switched to a senko, and got a Pickerel, and 2 Largemouth with the biggest only just under 1lb.

Had some friends in from Maine for the weekend. And what better way to start working off a hangover from the Bruins Parade, and the Red Sox game, than get an hour- and-half of fishing in on Sunday AM. So only 1 of them wanted to fish, so hit up one of the honey holes. And produced right away. 1st section was all Largemouth about 10". Moved to a different section before we headed out. We both ended up catching a Bass at the same time. Checked out a few other spots that didnt pan out. Final tally, My buddy Matt had 2 Bass with the bisggest being 1-1/2lbs, I finished with 5 Bass with the biggest being 1lb

2nd of 2 Stops tonight. Started down at purgatory cove, and wow is that filling in with pads. Froggin, and Flippin; will be the only way there soon. Nothing doing down there, so I moved to the wall behind the Watch Factory. Pitching a senko in between the wall the openings in the sparse pad growth. Almost everytime Id get a hit, and either lose it in the pads, or not hook up. Finished up the night with a 3/4lb, and a 1lb Largemouth.

I hooked only one Largemouth that was 15" 1lb 6oz. I decided to move on when a family showed up with there kids, who needed to throw rocks in the water...

2nd of back to back tournies here, but today was a team tourney. The began cold, but warm up quickly. Wind wasnt a factor like yesterday. The started very slow for us. Nothing doing down south, nothing but short bites by the island, and we saw Smoke get his lunker as we were pulling in, lol. Vinny finally get us on the board at 11am hooks up on the crankbait with a 1lb Smallie. Then proceeds to catch multiple, White and Yellow Perch, Sunfish, and a Pickerel. I finally connect an hour later with a 13oz Largemouth. With an hour left we made a move again. Got to about 10 minutes left and I got back to back strikes with a 1-1/4lb Smallmouth, and a 1lb 10oz Largemouth. At the end of the day 4 fish to the scale for 4lb 11oz for a 4th place finish. We just plain ran out of time. Im not sad to be down with this place though. Good job everyone who fished, and congrats to Smokecity with the win and lunker!

This was the 1st of back to back tournaments at this swill hole of a pond, this one as a co-angler. Wind was brutal all day. Water is like chocolate milk, monster rocks everywhere. Tough day overall, too much weight and you were stuck in the rocks every time, so lightweight in the wind with barely any feel for the bottom. The boater I fished with hit a hot spot and picked-up a small limit by 9:30am, and his 3.16lb lunker Largemouth by 11am. I lost a keeper smallie early, had another good bite come unbuttoned later on. Tried a crankbait for a while and got a White Perch, 2 Yellow Perch, a Bluegill, and a 6" Largemouth. Finally got my only keeper fish of the day at about 1:30pm on a shakeyhead. 12" 1lb 1oz gave me 13th place out of 15 anglers, and left me not terribly excited for Sundays Tourney

Swung threw here after work, and boy was the wind howling. I did get a good laugh as a couple boneheads dropped there boat half way off the trailer onto the skeg, and hull on the ramp about 10ft from the water. Finesse technique was out of question, so I just through a inline spinner, end up getting a 5in Largemouth, 7in Yellow Perch, and a 12" 3/4lb Smallmouth.

Got out for a day of fun fishing with Vinny at one of my favorite places to wet a line. We put in about a 10 hour day on the water. Launched the boat at 6am with a slight mist in the air, temp about 65 degrees, and overcast. Sun finally broke through around 9:30am, and wind kicked up in the afternoon. Water temp was 70, and by the end of our outing it had risen to 74-75 degrees.

The bite started slow, and alot short biting our baits. But as the day warmed the fish definately got more aggressive. We did find Bass on beds, though is looks as the lake is in a spawn/post spawn stage. We caught alot of fish today, but never found the bigger ones. And because of the size of the lake, we maybe only could cover 30% of it. Most of our Bass were in the 1-1/4lb 1-1/2lb range. Vinny finished the day with 15 Largemouth, a little 12" Pike with a fat belly, his best 5 Bass were about 7lbs. I finished up with another 15 Largemouth as well(my biggest 2 were 2lbs 5oz, and 1lb 14oz), two 1lb Smallmouth, and a Pickerel. My Best 5 Bass went about 8 lbs, and combined limit we would have been about 9 to 9-1/2lb, which is only average for Webster. But still a great day, with a good friend, on a beautiful lake, I take that any day.
