Quabbin
5/28/2014

Out on the Quabbin Wednesday with my oldest son, Mickey, and his buddy, Brady. Cool day to say the least. We're on the water at 6:30 and I've got a little smallie on a Zara Spook in the first 10 minutes. I pick off a few more smallies on a jerkbait. The boys are more interested in trout. Brady gets his first Laker on a spoon! After some roaming between deep and shallower water, Mickey hits a 3 pound smallie on a craw. We then venture further and deeper. I see some structure and Mickey gets another 3 pound smallie on a spoon and says, "I was hoping for a trout!" Back to shallow water for a bit and I get a 3 pound Smallie on a grub. On to deep water again working our way back toward home base. At about 3:30, Mickey says, "I think I might have one." 5+ minutes later after reeling and pulling drag, I see the flash and get ready with the net. Big fish! I net him and there are high fives all around! 7 pound 2 oz Laker on a spoon! Not bad for a first Laker! We fish our way back with nothing else and drive to Belchertown for weight certification for Pin. An awesome day of firsts!

Went for one of my typical early AM trips to one of the popular spots for 3 hours. Hour one, 1 nice smallie. Hour 2, another nice smallie. Just finishing hour 3 with the proverbial "one more cast" and hit a good smallie on a long flat. Next cast another! Next cast another! No more after that. I've never caught fish on 3 casts in a row at Wachusett (or two in a row for that matter!). Got pics of the first 4. # 5, I got back in with no pic. All released quickly and safely. None over 4 lb but all over 3 lb.

Good opening day to the Kayak Tourney Season with nice weather and a good mix of newcomers and seasoned veterans. The tournament "rookies" ruled the day grinding out nice showings on a day where the bite was slow. Nice to see 1st and 3rd place to a father and son! Here are the top 3 and Lunker:

1. themasterg- 4lb 11 oz
2. kenwood- 3 lb 8 oz
3. senior_smoke- 3 lb 2 oz

Lunker- kenwood- 2 lb 1 oz

Thanks to all for coming out and hope to see you in 2 weeks!

Got my PB best Laker a few days ago at 7 lb 2 oz. and of course forgot my cell phone camera so no record except in my memory!

Back today in search of early season smallies. Got a nice one at 4 lb 3 oz on a suspending jerkbait.

Fishing the Chu is a little like baseball. Long periods of boredom occasionally interrupted by heart pounding excitement!

Took a quick stop at the Res this AM. About 15 minutes in, the Kastmaster gets heavy. I've finally figured out that if you think you might have a Laker on, you do! Set the hook and had a pretty good fight with a 3 15 Laker. It was 4 'til I removed the Kastmaster!

Went to the Chu Wednesday AM to see if there were any Smallies accessible within casting distance. 30 minutes and a thump on the Slender Pointer later I had my answer. This is my PB Smallie and the first time I have broken the 4 pound Smallie barrier. Nice to get some recompense after taking my fair share of skunks over the past few months!

Set out this morning on my first search for the famed Wachusett Laker. Made up my mind I would keep throwing the Kastmaster 'til I got one. It took about an hour. Not a giant but mission accomplished for my first Laker.

Returned to the Chu a week after getting blanked on my first Muskie Adventure Tour. Same gate, same time, different spot. Started fishing a Spook at daybreak. On my 5th or so cast I get a swing and a miss so I kept "walking the dog" and he came back to hit it again, this time for keeps. After hauling in the fish, performing a treble hook extraction in which I busted a hook with the pliers, I was holding a beautiful 3 pound 14 ounce smallie. No picture of scale reading as the fish was ready to get back in the water after an unhooking and weighing which took a bit longer than I would have liked. Not a world record but my best smallie yet!
