Nighttime Hog At Brighton Boat Ramp

**Please look at the photo. Can you tell me what those black marks near the tail are??

Was very windy when I got there. No good for presenting any sort of topwater, let alone getting it out there in the first place. Used a black senko for a while. Couple of short strikes, but nothing solid.

Switched over to my 3/8, black, jointed Jitterbug. Cast along the shoreline. There is a small downed tree there. (If you look closely, it has, or had about 5 jitterbugs stuck in it. I now tie on a 30 lb. leader to my braid. I've managed to tear some branches off and save my lure a few times with that. If you're curious, if you add about a foot and a half, it really allows for the lure to wiggle better for some reason.) I threw about 20 feet past that tree, on a line with it, which is app. 6-7 feet from the shore. Right as the lure neared the tree, I got hit by a cow; big splash, weight on the line, the whole deal. It took a little bit to get it in because she was fighting pretty hard. I didn't have a scale or anything to measure it, so I put it up against my 22 in. rim to snap a photo. Threw her back in and continued.

I caught a few tiny smallies, between 7-11 in. Nothing to write home about. Packed up and went home.

  • Ha! You'd be selling a bunch of mine and I would probably buy them back. Each jitterbug I've bought this year, I've lost after catching an average of three fish on them. So sad. Nighttime is a real b****!

  • Sweet fish man, Ive thought about taking a chain saw to a few trees at crystal lake this year. I bet Id make a fortune selling all the lures stuck in them!

  • goto:Google images and type in Bass MelanosisAKA Hyper-pigmentation

  • Yeah... They weren't really raised bumps. I'm just wondering if it was sick or not. It put up a hell of a fight, so it didn't seem ill.

  • AKA Hyper-pigmentation
sorta like any melenoma in humans-albinoism is a human form of what you have there on those bass

  • Bass Melanosis

  • Stas, thanks man!

    Which laydown? Brighton or Crystal?

  • I was at bass pro a couple of months ago and most of the LMB swimming in thier fish tank have these black spots like your fish. I'm guessing its a virus of some sort. Btw, I had to wade into that laydown the other day to retrieve my spinner :)

  • Hey man, I've got a few different people responding to what those black marks near the tail might be. Any idea?
