Time: 5:00-8:30am
Weather: warm, sunny,

Today brought alot of fish, but the quality fish dropped. We sighted a few bass still on beds, but it definatly seems that the spawn has slowed down. Seems we need to switch to post spawn techniques. Later in the morning we were able to land a few nice fish including a fat 16″ weighing 2.6 lbs on a wacky rigged senko.

Quote: "Quick question, I'm more of a bass guy, don't know much about the slimspecies, and I noticed you work with the Cabelas aquarium, what helps u identify the pike verses Pickeral?"

There are three species of Pike in Connecticut: Northern pike, Chain pickerel, and Redfin pickerel. Northern pike can grow quite large. They will have light spots on a dark background in adults. The fins are typically light with dark markings.
Chain pickerel are usually not found where other pikes are present. They will have black "chain links" over their sides. Bodies are typically green/yellow in color and there will be a vertical "scar" through the eye.
Redfin pickerel are the smallest of the Pike family (in the world!). They have vertical, dark barring on the sides and a dark "scar" slanting backward through the eye. The fins are typically reddish and the snout is short.
Most often, in Connecticut, Chain pickerel are what you will find. However, Redfin can be found in some ponds and quiet backwaters (including the Connecticut River) and Northern pike have become popular since they were introduced. Bantam Lake, the Connecticut River, and Mansfield Hollow are popular spots for Northerns.
