Hit up my "local" for three hours yesterday afternoon, this after seeing a few fisherman take some fish out of the water last week. That being said I wasn't expecting much as I've never fished the Lower Mystic this late in the season and especially with water levels 2 -3 feet lower than they usually are. I was one of about 3 people out fishing, one other from the shore making long casts with what looked like a suspended swim bait with another fishing from a kayak. Went out primarily hoping to get a Smallmouth but when all was said and done I landed six Largemouth and had a decent Smallmouth spit the bait after a few jumps. All were caught using a Zoom Rec Shad Finesse worm fished weightless on a Texas rig. One of the benefits of the water being so low is that enough shoreline was exposed to allow me to fish some spots that are otherwise inaccessible, and with the water clarity, also allowed me to see where the flats and drop-offs were. My best success came from west-facing shorelines (those with longest exposure to the sun) casting parallel to the edges of the drop offs and slowing working the worm back along them with a slow retrieve with some long pauses in between, the hits usually coming during the pauses. Most of the fish were similarly-sized and were probably schooling but most looked quite healthy which should be good looking towards next spring. All-in-all a very surprising but awesome day.
