Fished the Charles River near Millis, in my kayak from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. First cast, bam the lure was taken hard. Pulled in a LMB - 9" long. What a great start. This was my first trip on this stretch of the Charles River. It runs from 3 feet to 6 feet deep on this stretch, with grass, weeds as cover. I used a spinner, a crank bait, plastics for the next hour and half. It was towards the last 20 minutes that I got these 2 lunkers, 16" and 14" on a plastic lure. The fish gave a good fight, had to let the fish take reel, as I was afraid that the line will break. I was using 8 lb line. My 8 pm alarm on my phone goes off, so I paddled back to the launch point, the fog started rolling on the water.

Overall, a great trip, and will go back again maybe in a couple of days.

Prework: Look up South Pond coordinates, access route on Google map, details on fish/trips on MA Fish finder

Trip details: Reached SouthEnd Pond around 6:45 pm , parked near to the closed gate, and transported my kayak using Stowaway Kayak carrier from the gate to launch point - 400 ft.

Used 2 spinning rods, 8lb and 6 lb and plastic lures, Kelly firetail worm on the 6lb, and a cray fish on a small jig head on the 8 lb line.

The pond except for the right side near to the launch point does not have any cover or structure. There is a great deal of moss/weeds that gets onto open hooks, and the water stinks of ddt.

Caught a crappie at the Charles river opening side, a few nibbles on the 6lb line till 8:00 pm. Was disappointed that there were no bites or bass. Cam to the lily pad cover area, changed the kelly firetail worm to a tube on a weedless jighead, and cast near the lily pads. BAM, the line went taut and then snapped. Saw a huge LMB jump up and disapper under the cover. OK thats a good sign. Changed the cray fish to a pumpkin tail, and cast around the same spot, I saw the LMB jump. Had a hit and a good fight ensued. Reeled the fish, and it got entangled in weed. Paddled to the spot, and reeled the LMB in - was 15'' , and weight - not sure. Removed the hook and released. Got a couple of bites around the same area. It was 8:30, so went back.

Overall, I guess I would return to the lily pad cover area, next time would fish for carp too.
