Hopkinton Reservoir
1/31/2016

Hit the shaded coves of Hopkinton Res. Ice was up to 5" in spots but lots of bubbles. We stood on the embankment mostly. Between my buddy and I, we only had 5 hooks in the water. We used branches with nylon wrapped around them as another 5 traps. Caught two rainbows that way. One male, 13.5". One female, 15"

Whitman's Pond
4/27/2013

Went out on Whitmans in the boat for the first time this season. That was the primary goal of the trip, the bass were just gravy. The fishing was really slow and my buddy and i only got one a piece. But that's fine, it was a beautiful day. We saw some sort of mammal (muskrat? beaver?) and a couple of Ospreys diving.

South Shore
4/20/2013

Fished some new water today. Very shallow and already a lot of veg. First location had nada, couldn't even get a bluegill to bite. The next location had bass rising along the brushline. That's where I focused my casting. Ended the day with two bass, both around 1.5-2lbs.

Houghton's Pond
3/31/2013

I was supposed to meet a friend at Houghton's Pond to see if we could grab some trout. He isn't a huge angler so I provided all the gear. So I hauled two people's worth of stuff to my spot only to find that he wasn't coming. Great. Additionally, the access road to my spot still hasn't been opened for the spring. But I did eventually get there and get my line in the water. (On a side note: holy s**t I need to respool my mono. Line twist hell.) It wasn't long before one of my reels started screaming. For a trout, it was a pretty good fight. It would be the only fish I caught although I know my bait got hit another time but the fish threw the hook. I talked with a lot of other fisherman that day and I was the only one to land anything, so that felt good. The trout was turned into a smoked trout spread for Easter brunch. Overall, first trip of the year was a success. Now, where's that first bass.....

Houghton's Pond
10/5/2012

Haven't been out fishing since Labor Day and the itch was unbearable. So I ducked out of work early and headed to Houghton's, a location I only go to for trout. Didn't have long to stay but I did manage one brown trout, which isn't that interesting unless it's your FIRST brown trout....which it was. Now I need a brookie.....

Whitman's Pond
9/9/2012

Took the boat out by myself for the first time (I'm a big boy!) I chose Whitman's Pond because I'm familiar with the ramp and the pond. The aquatic vegetation there is incredibly thick and, despite the weedless prop, I had to stop about a half dozen times to clear weeds from the propeller. I was fishing jig because I wanted to practice. I did get a few hits off a shallow island (one of the "claws" on my craw got swallowed) but I wasn't hooking in to anything. I went to a white Senko and caught three LMB. I had to limp back to the ramp after my prop found some monofilament in the weeds and wrapped itself up. All in all a good day, but I won't be going back to Whitman's until vegetation starts to die out. I also have been trying an experiment....the last three times I've gone to Whitman's I've slow trolled a shallow bomber in green and yellow. I've caught yellow perch in the same place every time. They love that thing! I'll be getting a similar color pattern for ice jigging.

Newfound Lake, NH
8/25/2012

Another weekend on Newfound Lake found me struggling again with the crystal clear, cold, and deep water. No action all day until dusk. First cast on a baby bass senko and it gets nailed. I had a cheering section on the docks to either side of me. 4 kids to the right and another 4 to the left. For some reason, all of the children on the left dock were naked.... I pulled in the bass and a bunch of kids ran over (thankfully all clothed). The fish put up an outstanding fight; jumping a half dozen times. I pulled the hook and some little hands reached in. Splash! Fish gone. That's why the picture sucks, never got to hold him. Oh well, any trip that isn't a skunk is a success for me!!

Out of Rock Harbor in Orleans. 4 hour charter for stripers and blues. Caught my first ever blue, and then a half dozen more. Trolling with hoochies. Tons of fun, great boat, great crew. And for those of you who don't like the taste of bluefish....you're cooking it wrong!

Great Pond
8/15/2012

I took my brother-in-law fishing on Great Pond in Eastham. He'd been fishing with me twice before but never caught anything and we weren't on the boat. This time he showed me up. He landed two largemouths and I got one lonely perch. But I'm really happy for him and now he's expressing interest in getting his own gear. Win!

Lake Boone
8/5/2012

Hit up Lake Boone around 9 on Sunday. I could have been in the Upper Mystic tourney but I'm an idiot and didn't check the website Saturday night. Next time...

The bite was very slow. We threw frogs, buzzbaits, jigs, crankbaits, senkos, and spinners. In total landed 8 bass, none of which were anything to write home about. "lunker" of the day is 1 3/4lb. Got the boat out of the water right before the skies opened up on us. Little disappointed, I would have expected more out of Boone.

Jacob's Pond
7/6/2012

I only live 15 minutes from Norwell so I thought I'd go after some of those hogs Hooligan keeps landing. The rocky shore was full up when I got there (was that you guys!?) so I headed to the docks. I threw everything I had in my tackle box (and I mean that) but only got a couple of taps. The fish were much more interested in grabbing bugs off the surface. My kingdom for a fly rod!! I drove back around to the rocky shore and there was a spot open. I immediately noticed that the aquatic vegetation was much lighter here. No luck on the Senko but I landed a solid fish on a Mepps. Also got a Black Crappie (one day after getting my first :)) I will definitely go back. Shore access like that is hard to come by, especially without huge fishing pressure.

Whitman's Pond
7/4/2012

The wife and I decided to take the boat out to see if anything was biting. It was partly cloudy, about 80 deg air temp. Wind was light. As soon as we were off the ramp I threw a crankbait and trolled it at low speed as we aimed for a small island. Right away got two yellow perch. Also landed a Pumpkin Seed. Tried fishing around a small island but it was just too shallow. Headed over to some docks and caught two LMB. One dink and one at 1lb 15oz. The clouds were getting dark so we started heading back to the launch. Trolled the same crankbait on the way back and got my first Crappie and another Yellow Perch. I was just strapping the boat to the trailer when the skies opened up. Overall a good day.

Newfound Lake, NH
6/23/2012 - 6/24/2012

Spent the weekend at Newfound Lake in NH. I always have trouble here because I don't bring my boat and for the most part, the fish stay deep. But, when the sun gets really low, the fish start cruising the shore. I spent all day catching nothing and then around dusk I landed two smallies and a horn pout. One of the smallies was my first ever catch on a crankbait, so that was fun.

Whitman's Pond
6/19/2012

Whitman's Pond after work til dusk. Half the time on the Washington St bridge, the other half at the Middle St park. I was casting weightless senkos on my baitcaster, more for practice than anything. I was surprised when it got hit. Nothing to write home about but a bass none the less. I didn't land any fish the rest of the day but had a few good strikes. A couple guys set up shop 10 feet from me and landed two bass and a pickerel in the first 5 minutes. I hate it when that happens!!

Merrymeeting Lake
5/20/2012

Hit up Merrymeeting Lake in NH going after smallies on their beds. It took a while to find a section of shoreline they were on but once we found them it was on! The best bite was on a black and blue jig with a rattler. These fish were VERY aggressive. My buddy lost his jig in about 4 feet of water right on a bed. He went in the water to get it and while trying to grab the jig with his toes, the smallie tried to swallow his big toe. Very funny. We also both hooked into smallies at the same time. Sight fishing bedding bass is by far my favorite fishing.

Bows and salmon were in shallow and you couldn't throw a stone without hitting a sucker. Spent the last hour or so going after lakers and salmon but no takers.

Houghton's Pond
4/29/2012

Went to Houghton's in Milton. Wind was really whipping, some white caps on the pond. 3 hours with nothing. Dropped off my light rods at the car and grabbed my bass rod. Went after some downed trees and got nothing. Found a guy who had caught his limit of trout and he showed me where the dropoff was. Went BACK to the car, dropped off the bass rod and grabbed my ultra-light. Had two bows in an hour.

Whitman's Pond
4/17/2012

Stopped behind That's Italian Too where the bridge crosses Whitman's Pond. I only intended to throw a few casts....until I saw a bass on her bed. Game on! I threw just about everything I had with no luck. Then I remembered I had plastic craw fish. Always a good choice on the beds. I rigged it up and dropped it in front of her face. Hit! Throw... Hit! Throw.... Wait, hit!!! ...throw. At this point I'm seriously doubting my hook. Since I'm going for a reaction bite I don't care too much about hiding the hook so I grabbed a Gamakatsu 1/0. Next hit didn't throw :) Oh, and did I mention this was on an ultra-light? Lots of fun bringing her in. Unfortunately my phone died, so no pics. But I would guess she was about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. I love it when they're on their beds!!!!

Whitman's Pond
4/16/2012

The wife and I hit Whitman's Pond around 4:30. We weren't getting any bites until a friendly angler gave us their left over worms. I immediately landed two sunnies. My wife, being a vegetarian, doesn't fish. But while I was working a senko, the bobber dipped on the other line. I told her I couldn't put my rod down (big lie) and that she needed to reel in the other one. Of course, it was very exciting for her. Now I just need to get her to hook into a bass... She caught a Golden Shiner, about 8" long. I finished the day with my first bass on a baby bass Senko. Got my first fish of the season, first bass of the season, and I got my wife to catch a fish! A good day.

Quarter Mile Pond, Stoneham, MA
7/29/2011

Started out at Turtle Rock on Spot Pond. Threw everything I had. Jitterbug, Rapala, Kreature, jig n pig, Mepps... All I got to show for it was a baby smallie.

Moved to Quarter Mile Pond to try my hand at flipping. My first time venturing into the pads. I don't have any frogs so I was using a weightless weedless gary yamamato creature bait. A few casts in, I get a fish to slash at it. That got my heart pumping. I was hopping the lure from one pad to the next occasionally letting it slide off. One good slash, fish on! Tried horsing it out but it was just stripping line. I had to hold the line against my rod with my hand and pull damn hard. Finally got him in, sorry for the bad picture.
Later on I had a frog take the lure. I pulled him out of the pads and now I'm thinking "how the hell do you get a hook out of a frog?" Just then he spits it out. He was never hooked, just felt like holding on! That's a lot of hours for one fish, but one fish is all I need to call the trip a success!

MA/NH/ME coast
7/12/2011

Went out on my buddy's boat for stripers. He has a commercial permit in mass so we were right on the NH border throwing live mackerel and chumming. A harbor seal showed up (which I thought was cool) but my buddies told me it would chase off the bass. Of course, right then we hook up on a 30" striper. No good, back you go. Not having tons of luck so we motor up the coast into the Piscat for some recreational fishing. I nabbed a solid fish using live macks on a baitrunner. I love that fight!

My buddy Tom and I spent about an hour on lower mystic down by where it drains into the river. I was using a 4" grey senko whaky style and Tom was using a 5" watermelon senko texas rigged. Got a good smallmouth on the second cast and Tom caught a respectable Crappie.

Everybody told me you can't fish this lake. (Except for the anglers on this site. Way to stay positive!!) Even the guy who sold me bait! In the end, I caught two smallies, my first Brown Bullhead and my first Carp (edit: not a carp, probably a white sucker), which was pretty big and fought hard! I did lose a couple lures on the rocky bottom and a big smallie (3 lbs?) threw the hook at the last second. The really funny part was when a smallmouth took some powerbait I left for the trout. He gulped it straight down and then took off straight up. He shot two feet out of the water completely vertical. Awesome. I bet this lake would kick ass with a boat.
