8/23/2015 - 9/13/2015

Overall I have had a great year for numbers but hadn't caught a fish over 5 since the spring. On August 23 I started a nice run with 6 fish over 5 pounds over the next 3 weeks. 4 of them on jigs, one on a frog and one on a drop shot which crushed my previous big ds fish by 2 pounds. All in all a great summer so far. Hope to keep it rolling. Tight lines all.

Honey Hole
6/8/2015

My pond has had the post spawn blues but I think they could be coming to an end. I went out in the hurricane for about 6 hours yesterday afternoon. There were gusts that stopped the boat dead in the water. That part sucked. I went to the wind blown shoreline and started buzzing. Nothing. I started throwing a 3/8 skipping jig. I like these around grass. They come through it pretty good. I started catching 1-2 pounders at a pretty good clip. I tried to back off and fish the 8-10 range looking for bigger fish. I got one. I just kept throwing the jig everywhere. Lots of small fish and just that one good one. I got a few on the frog in pads. I started cranking in the late afternoon. Still catching dinks and lots of bait fish. As the sun was going down I decided to throw the buzz again as I was heading back to the ramp. Bam bam bam I get a bunch of fish in a short little rally to end the day. All in all another great afternoon on the water. Had over 25 bass, countless crappie, a bunch of perch and one snapping turtle.

Lake Quannapowit
8/6/2014

I hit up lake Quannapowit for about 3 hours this afternoon. I lost my first fish pitching to a tree. It was a good one. I caught my next bite but it was only a 1 1/2 pounder. Then I spent the rest of the time casting. There is some nice eye candy at that place. All in all it was a great day on the water. Tight lines all!

I was at one of my favorite ponds throwing the frog around and having some luck. I tossed it next to a dock and saw a huge wake come out and then the frog goes under. I set the hook and immediately think I have a 7-8 pound bass. As I started reeling I knew something was wrong. Then I see the head come up. Snapping turtle. I got it to the side of the boat and managed to get the hook out. Kind of a bummer. I ended up with 7-8 fish but no 8 pounders

Merrimack River
6/5/2014

I picked up Dunt around 3:30 and headed over to the Merrimack for some smallies. He started us off with a nice 2 pounder on a KVD square bill. Then I got a dink on a square bill. We came up on a cove that had water chestnuts just starting to take over. We went in. The depth was between 1-3 ft. Hard to tell with the weeds. We were hoping to find Larry but got a bigger surprise. We were both throwing buzz baits. I got a huge blowup right near the boat and then another 2-3 casts later but didn't hook up. Then I hear Dunt say he has one. I hear line stripping and locate the fish. That's a Pike!!!! Dunt's using a spinning rod with 10 pound mono. He fights the fish perfectly for a long time. Every time he gets it close, it sees the boat and makes a run. I have the net ready and we finally get him in.
We get the lure out and figure out the best way to grab it. It's Dunt's first Northern and I've only got 2. I grab it by the back of the head and we get it on the scale. 12.2 it weighs. I caught a couple of dink smallies and then it was time to go.

4 straight days of fishing

Multiple places
5/28/2014 - 6/1/2014

Starting on Thursday morning I was off work for 4 days in a row with no obligations other than an afternoon dentist appt on Thursday. I decided to head an hour or so west on Thursday and hit up Pond D. I was surprised at the grass beds that I saw. But this pond has a good variety of wood cover, overhanging brush and random rocks. I pretty much ignored the mats (probably my weakest skill punching mats). I started throwing the frog under trees and hooked up immediately. I would only need that bait for the day. I threw jigs, craws and cranks but other than the frog I had just one hit on the jig. Tiger Muskie. That's my new thing. If I get bit off, it must have been a tiger muskie. I ended the day with a dozen or so bass, none of which is brag about except maybe one that I got tea bagging the frog over a branch. That was awesome. I also got one pickerel that of course was the biggest blowup of the day. The dentist went well.
Day 2 was Friday. Sam and I met at 4:45 am and headed north to lake W. We started off in a largemouth cove and spent an hour finding out they hadn't moved up yet. Sam got one right at the beginning part of the cove. Water temp was around 60 there. We moved to a spot where we thought the smallies would be bedding. BINGO! I know some people are against bed fishing but I'm not. We bagged a ton of fish. Had double hookups three times and basically went non stop until a storm rolled in. One minute no wind and calm water. The next was gale force winds and white caps. Time to bail. I didn't feel too cheated as we had a good day and a long ride ahead anyway.
Day 3 was Saturday. Darren and I were heading to the Cape. Turns out I made two pretty bad decisions. The first one was going to the Cape in the first place. The wind was horrible. The second one was going to a pond I'd never went to. Ashumet. PAVE IT. We lost 3 smallies and I caught a rainbow walking the dog. We pulled out (lol) at 11:30 or so and headed up to one of my local spots. It didn't matter. We couldn't buy a bite. If not for that trout I would have had 0 fish. I felt bad for Darren as he hasn't been able to get out much and can't seem to get one of those days everything's biting. Soon I hope.
Day 4 it's Sam and I again meeting around 5am on Sunday. We went to pond c. We were met with blue bird skies. We were expecting them tight to cover and shallow. The place is shallow all the way through anyway. We grabbed our first 5 fish on frogs with Sam getting a 3 pounder. That was the fun part. The rest of the day was a grind. We ended up with 25-30 fish and it didn't feel like a good day. My best fish was a 3 pounder on a jig that probably kept me sane because I had some long stretches without a bite.
This might be the first time I've fished this much over 4 consecutive days. It was exhausting in an awesome way.

Pond A, B and C
5/25/2014 - 5/26/2014

Sam and I met up at 4:45 am on Sunday. We started at pond A. A clear water pond with smallies and largemouth. There were some smallies on beds but it didn't matter. We were killing it with spooks, Jimmy's and Sammy's. They couldn't lay off the dog. We also picked up some fish with craws. Around midday we moved to pond B.
Pond B was a bigger bow also with clear water. Smallies and largemouth live here too. We saw even less beds here. We didn't catch as many fish here as pond A but the quality was there. Our biggest was around 4 pounds. We were getting them on jigs, craws, and grubs. I can't remember if we got any on top.
Day 2
I met Sam at 5 am and we headed out in search of Larry. I had spooled up my new frog rod the night before and was eager to try it. (Genesis air 7'5 H with a lews tournament pro 7.1). I started throwing a popping frog while Sam went with the spook. Over the next 4 hours with heavy cloud cover and intermittent showers the Topwater bite was on fire. We boated 50 or more fish from dinks to 3 1/2 pounders. I've never seen such an awesome Topwater bite before.
Then the weather shifted. It got windier and the sun was popping out. The fish went tight to cover and it was a grind for the next few hours. We boated about 10 more fish but Sam probably got 9 of them. We wrapped it up early and avoided the traffic home. We definitely beat our previous best of one kabillion fish. I can't wait to throw that frog again.

Lake Quannapowit
5/9/2014

Dunt and I hit up Quannapowit for about 3 hours this afternoon. The weather was cloudy with off and on showers. Air temp was 55 with light winds and water temp was 59. Dunt got it going with a keeper on a kvd squarebill. Then I caught the next two bass on a Texas rigged craw. My next fish was a huge crappie. I didn't even know they were in there. It was 15 inches long and weight 1.13. Dunt grabbed a nice bass off a dock and then off a rock. I got fish on back to back casts with the craw. I tried a buzzbait for a bit but the water temps aren't quite there yet. I can't wait to cast that thing until my arm falls off.

Lawrence. Pond
4/13/2014

Sam and I met up at the usual time (5am) and headed to the Cape for some smallie action. We went to Lawrence pond. We went last year in the fall and wanted to see what it was like in the spring. There's not much structure here except a couple of points so that's what we concentrated on. Sam started it off with the biggest smallie of the day (we didn't weigh anything) on a jerk bait. Ghost minnow I believe. He caught all of his fish on jerkbaits actually. I kept the tradition of catching largemouth instead of smallmouth alive by bagging a Larry on a dt20. I was fishing it on 15# test. I was getting it around 15-16 ft deep. This fish was in 13 ft and was close to 4 pounds. (The pic doesn't do him justice). I got all of my fish on crankbaits. The dt20, a sebile blue/orange craw (8-10ft) and a live target chartreuse deep diving craw. My first smallie crushed the dt20. I made my cast, cranked it down hard and stopped right when I hit the bottom. She must have been following it cuz she crushed it right when I stopped. That was pretty much the exciting part. The wind picked up to a steady gale and we picked up fish here and there. Our final determination? PAVE IT.

Lake S
9/15/2013

Sam and I hit a local pond Sunday morning around 7 am. We were on his boat so I had the back. I started off throwing a crankbait. I got a dink pretty quickly. I couldn't get anything going with the buzzbait. This was my third time here and I only have a couple of fish on it. I have deemed that place anti-buzz and will stop throwing them there. Sam was throwing a spook and wake bait. He was catching fish. He also lost a decent fish when it threw the wakebait. As the sun came up the fish moved under the brush. Time to skip some jigs. This is really when it was on. I barely threw anything else for the rest of the day. That means WHITE LIGHTNING did most of the work. I have to say once again how much fun it is skipping jigs. It's rewarding just to make a good skip. It's awesome when you make a good skip, your partner says deserves, and Wham! You get a fish. Just a great feeling. We ended up catching a ton of fish. Nothing huge though. We did catch a few 3 pounders. Overall I had a fun day. It's always a good day when you're catching tons of fish.

Next weekend is smallie weekend. Saturday with Sam and Sunday at the Quabbin with my man Darren. I hear the boys from Northshore are gonna check it out too.

Multiple ponds
8/30/2013 - 8/31/2013

Sam and I took some vacation time and made plans to fish on Friday. Sometime during the week the plans he had with someone else for Saturday fell through so he asked if I wanted to fish Saturday too. I never say no to fishing. On Friday we planned to hit a couple of ponds in Plymouth. We decided to make it an all day trip. One thing we have in common is the definition of fishing all day. We met at 5:30am and I got home about 8:30pm. During that time we hit a secluded pond where Sam caught his biggest fish of the 2 days. A 5.10 Beast that I would have bet was 6 lbs when I netted him. He got that flipping shoreline brush. My most productive bait there was a crankbait but I also got a couple on the buzzbait. Around 12:30 we decided to make a move. We went to a pond that Sam says gets pounded. Little Long Pond. I'm pretty sure that's the name. Shallow and crystal clear. We pounded the shoreline brush. Sam was more productive than me catching the most and heaviest fish that we estimate at 4 pounds. I only had 2 fish and vote to pave it.

Day 2. Saturday.

Well Saturdays weather couldn't have been any better for a buzzbait freak like me. Cloudy with a chance of rain and a slight breeze. Well the breeze was off and on but the bite wasn't. I got the first fish of the day on a crankbait and then Sam got a few punching grass. It looked like the place was treated for weeds recently as we had a hard time locating green mats. We were picking off fish here and there on the buzzbait and Sam with the frog but couldn't really come up with a pattern. It was too random. Until we found a cove with a little bit of current, green grass and clearer water. Bam!!! The buzzbait was getting killed. Sam was walking the frog and they were crushing it. I got the big fish of the day when a 5 pounder completely came out of the water from the side on my buzzbait. One of the most violent bass strikes I had ever seen. We caught a bunch of fish in this cove with some 3's and a 4 to go with the 5. After we totally pounded every inch of that place it was time to start heading out. I kept buzzing and Sam was switching between the buzzbait and the frog. At one point he had a 3 pounder totally come out of the water and crush his buzzer. If I hadn't already seen the 5 pounder do that I' call it the most violent strike I ever saw. It was awesome.

All in all we caught a ton of fish. I'm sorry I can't name spots due to privacy issues but I hope you enjoyed the tale.

Edit: We keyed in on a few things on Saturday. the first was that the water was low by about 1.5' which made a big difference in a relatively shallow place. There were almost no fish on the bank. The pads didn't look healthy either. Everything was pretty much offshore.

Another thing was that the fish were higher up in the water column right under the weed mat surface instead of buried at the bottom. So if the fish in the mats didn't hit it immediately on the fall, you had to lift it to the top of the mat and shake it or slightly jig it and they grabbed it.

This was good for the buzzbait and frog too since they didn't have to come up very far to hit them.

Merrimack River
8/29/2013

I picked up my buddy Dunt around 6 this morning and headed to the Mighty Merrimack. We launched out of Lawrence and started fishing the left side of the river right after the no wake zone. Bagged a couple of small Sallies on a KVD sexy shad 1.5 right away. Fished that back for about a half an hour and then decided to go up river as far as we could. We got to an area that looked kind of shallow so we turned around and started fishing. We caught a bunch of little smallies which are fun but not quite what we were looking for. The biggest one we caught was probably only a pond and a half, The surprise of the day was a giant pike. It was caught on a KVD 1.5 chartruese with a black back. What an awesome fight. My adrenaline was pumping!!!

Lake Attitash
8/27/2013

I was thinking about heading to Attitash with a buddy on Thursday. He hasn't fished in a while and I wanted to go somewhere we could catch a bunch of fish. My honey hole has been getting a chemical treatment every 2 weeks for the last month and a half and the bite is off. So I went to check out Attitash on a whim. I got there at noon. 80 degrees and only a few clouds. I start throwing a crankbait around the 6-8 ft zone looking for grass. Nothing. The only stuff I found was brown and dead. I went into the mouth of the river (I assume it's a river) and there was some greenery. Pretty shallow back there so I start chucking around a huge double bladed buzzbait. WHAMMY! 3 1/2 pounder. Thought I took a pic but my camera died. Good thing I carry two most of the time. Since I recently started to develop the skill of skipping a jig I decided to pound the docks instead of trying to find a hump since the grass was dead. First fish I catch under a dock is my biggest of the day. Around 4 pounds. Got 3 more fish and a bunch of backlashes. Still a skipping noobie but it's fun.

Honey Hole
8/16/2013

I hit up my favorite spot for a few hours. Got on the water around 5:30 pm and fished until 8:30 or so. The plan was to fish this little channel where I have always suspected the fish hang out but have only caught 1 or 2 fish there. I'm still getting comfortable with offshore fishing. I get to the spot and start catching perch right away on the Strike King KVD 5x. I tie on a rapala jointed crank in a perch pattern that dives to 14'. I'm in 12' throwing to about 6' and grinding that crank down the slope. BAM!! 1st fish goes 3.11. About 10 minutes later the crank gets slammed but the fish comes off right away. I throw the jig back to him and WHAMMY!! He eats it. He goes 4.2. I slide over to a nearby bank that has a steep drop and my crank gets slammed again. All of these fish fought hard but this one was making big runs. I thought I had at least a 5 pounder. When I get him close enough to net I see he's only got 1 treble in his mouth. Whew. He's my big fish of the day at 4.7. I caught 3 more fish on the dog but they were all dinks. I love when I have a plan and it works.

8/8/2013 - 8/9/2013

On Aug 8th I met up with Sam to fish one of his ultra secret spots. He blind folded me and made me wear earplugs. We drove for about an hour but I'm pretty sure we did some circles and cutbacks. We get to the spot and launch his boat. 1st cast with the buzzbait and I get a dink. Sam makes a cast with a buzzbait and gets a dink. I can't remember any time I've ever seen both guys get 1st cast bass. It goes like that all day. Jigs, buzzbaits, and crankbaits. Mostly the jig. The weather was really cloudy and it had rained a bit when we 1st started. The fish were on the edges of the overhangs and just happy to be alive. 1 kabillion fish boated.

Day 2 Friday August 9th
I met Sam at the same parking lot this morning and there was rain in the forecast. We were on our way to A1 Stump pond. It started raining 5 minutes after we got on the highway. Neither one of us had been here before and were surprised by the water clarity. I got a blowup right away on the buzzbait. We threw frogs, buzzbaits and jigs but mostly Sam walked the frog and I buzzed. We figured they would be roaming around a bit with all the clouds, wind and rain. They were. We caught them in the pads, near stumps, over grass and just about everywhere else. The big fish of the day came on Sam's popping frog that he was walking near a shoreline tree. The temps started to drop and so did the bite. Caught a couple of more on jigs near stumps on the way back to the ramp. For anyone planning on going here for the first time...GO SLOW!!!

Fosters Pond Andover, Ma
7/27/2013

Since I never registered the Bass Hunter this year and I can't get my new boat in here I haven't fished Fosters before today. Thanks to Sam and his 12' tracker I was finally able to hit it.
Sam picked me up around 5:30am. We hit dunks, ran every red light and stop sign and got to the launch area around 5:45.
Being electric only really lets you fish thoroughly. We started chucking around buzzbaits, frogs, jigs and of course I was cranking. I got a crappie, pickerel and a blue gill in the first half hour. No bass. Then Sam gets one on the frog. And then some more on the frog. And then on a jig and then he caught so many fish that I don't even care to speak about it. He was on fire. I'm pretty sure he out fished me 4-1. I was especially concerned that he even out buzzed me. I almost flipped us to end the misery. 99% of the fish we got were up tight to cover so Sam had the teabag (casting over a branch to dunk his bait) going in full effect. It's awesome to see fish come up for that frog that's barely touching the water. It would have been nice to see them hit mine doing exactly the same thing. Apparently the Fosters Pond fish were pissed at me for not catching them and getting them on video for a year.
Anyway, I got a bunch of fish on the jig but nothing work taking pics of. Sam doesn't smile. Gonna have to work on that. Oh ya and he threw a SENKO!

Horn Pond
7/8/2013

Hit up Horn pond today after work for a few hours. Air temp was 82 when I arrived around 4 and 70 when I left at 9. I took a left from the ramp and started cranking with a kvd 1.5 sexy shad. The water was low and there were a couple of Buoys out near the water dept. There was water bubbling up in 3 spots too like there was a broken pipe under water. I avoided it. Went over to the shady shorline and started throwing a deep diving craw pattern crank. The water drops off to about 12 feet pretty quickly and theres a lot of wood in the water from all the trees. No takers but fishing that shoreline faces the walking path so I took my time if you catch my drift. I spot a newly downed tree just inside the 2nd cove so I go check it out. There's a breeze but I'm able to position the boat perfectly to take my time and work it over. I read an article that said to make your first cast to the nastiest part so ZI did. Nothing. I worked it over from one side to the top of it and back down the other side where my first fish of the day hit a Boag Hog Baits 3/8 green pumpkin swim jig that I added rattles to with a black/red flake chigger craw trailer. He was about 3 1/2 lbs
There are a couple of pods of pads right there so I worked them over with the jig but no takers. I went back across to hit all the overhangs on the walking path side. Eye candy everywhere. I pick up my 2nd fish on the jig and he goes around 2 pounds. I continue to work the jig the same way but don't pick up anything else. I get out of the cove and head to the island. The water is deep over here so I'm throwing the deep diving crank bait but have the trolling motor set about midway so I can get over there.
When I get to the island I notice the breeze is creating a nice ripple, it's clouded up, and the sun is setting. Buzz bait time. I had a white one tied on so I start with that. I get a swipe after 4-5 cast. I throw the jig around the same area but no takers.
As it'll be getting dark soon I decide I'll go all the way across to the shoreline just a little way down from the other ramp with the smaller parking area. On the way over I switch to a black 1/2 ounce double bladed buzz bait. 2nd cast I bag a 2 pounder. 5 or 6 more casts and I get another one around 2 pounds. I'll catch these all night
I'm just going down the shoreline making as many casts as I can. I hook up with a dink and waterski him to the boat. He flies off the hook as I go to pull him in. Hahahaha whatever dink.
There's a couple of guys shore fishing so I have to go around them. I get a swipe at the buzz when I get back to the shore on the other side of them. I don't bother with the jig as I am now in head for the ramp mode.
When I'm in front of the parking lot almost at the ramp I pick up my last fish on the buzz bait that was probably 1 1/2.
Do this at Horn and you will catch fish.

Lake Quannapowit
6/27/2013

Hit up lake Quannapowit today hoping for a Lunker. I didn't get one but got 4 keepers. I was hoping I could just stick a video in here and that would be that but noooooo. Trip wizard won't let me. So I'll tell ya. Conditions were 67 degree air temp with fog and low cloud cover. It was raining off and on. These are perfect buzzbait conditions. Let me first say that I've never had much luck at this lake aside from one really good day. which happened to be raining. I start off to the left of the ramp where there are some nice lay downs along the cemetery's shoreline. No takers on a buzzbait, crankbait, jig or soft plastic. Stupid awesome looking laydown. I continue along. There are some pads in about 2 feet of water. I Buzz the edges. I crank the edges. I walk the dog. Jig, soft plastic craw and then finally start punching the pads. Zip, Zilch, nadda.
Theres a long point that drops off to 5 feet on the back side, about 8 on the end and the front. I crank it and drag the jig and the craw around. Nothing. Moving on. More pads. More of the same. After about an hour and just when I'm thinking I should have gone somewhere else my buzzbait gets hammered. Bam. Nice 2 1/2-3 pounder along the edge of the pads. About 5 casts later I grab a 2 pounder. I hand around that area for a little while with no more fish. After the pads ended the shoreline still looked good. Lots of overgrown bushed and tree overhangs. Lots of wood in the water. Nothing. It stays about 2 ft deep for about 50 yards off the shoreline so I went out to that firs depth change and started cranking weedlines. Got a 1 1/2 pounder on a rapala square bill clackin rap. I worked my way to the opposite shoreline from where I had started my day. There are lots of weeds and rocks here. As it was getting dark I tied on a half ounce double bladed buzzbait. I prefer black in these conditions but recently lost my last one so I'm throwing white. I pretty much stick with those 2 colors (I just ordered more and got a white/chartreuse for sh*ts and giggles). Theres a tree overhanging the water in like 2 ft. I'm making casts all around it and finally grab my 4th fish as I pass by the tree. It's another good fish in the 2 pound range. I continue down that shoreline a bit longer but now it's dark, foggy and rainy. Time to go. Recap: not bad. 4 hours, 4 decent fish on a lake that's known for quality over quantity. I saw about a half a million carp. I don't know if a huge carp populations affects the bass population...Blackstone?

Concord River/Honey Hole
6/16/2013

Went to the Concord river on Father's Day with my boy. He didn't really want to fish but agreed to go for me. The water was really high. After about 3 hours I asked him if he wanted to get out of there. He talked me into staying for another hour but by then I'd had enough. We didn't catch anything and I only had one small bite. He enjoyed driving the boat and I enjoyed my alone time with him. I tried talking him into going to another pond but he was all done. So I dropped him at home and hit up my honey hole. I ended up with 9 fish in about 5 hours. The best 5 for around 15 pounds.

Upper Mystic
6/4/2013

Darren and I hit Upper Mystic for a few hours. There was a steady 15 MPH wind with up to 22 MPH gusts. We started on the right side leaving from the ramp with Darren throwing a KVD 2.5 and me ripping a 3/4 ounce lipless crank (brand unknown) through the grass. I get the first fish of the day that came in around 3 pounds. I couldn't find my camera (put it in a different place than usual) so he didn't make the highlights. When we got to the first big patch of pads we switched to the flipping sticks and I hook up immediately with a 3 pounder that throws the hook. A few minutes later I hook up again and boat my second fish. Then D gets on the board with a 1 1/2 or so. I make a pitch and my line just feels heavy so I set the hook hard. It felt like I hooked a log and said so to D. Then the log fought back. After negotiating him out of the pads I put him on the scale and he came in at 4 on the nose. We then each missed a few bites. As the sun was going down we started cranking the edges and Darren grabs another smaller on. I then hooked up with my first ever Mystic pickerel. I didn't even know they were in there until I read a report earlier in the year. I get him to the boat and the lure pops out. I'm totally ok with that. He was pretty big. D catches one more small bass near the dam and I get a big fat shiner near the old dock pilings. I think I'm gonna go back today.

Quabbin Reservoir
5/17/2013

My buddy Dunt and I headed out West to Lunker Lady Land yesterday. The weather report was perfect for site fishing. We got up wicked early, packed up and made the long drive. We packed up the boat as fast as we could and got moving because the spot we wanted to fish was about a 45 minute drive in the boat. The very first thing I noticed was how low the water was. Probably the lowest I've seen in 15 years (don't quote me on that) . The morning air was chilly so I had on my gortex. This would prove to be the best move of the day putting it on. The wind started of as just a breeze but about 15 minutes into our ride it really kicked up. The waves started rolling with whitecaps. By the time we got to the spot the winds were at gale force and our plans were scrapped. Crankbaits were gonna be the thing. I'm not complaining because I love cranking. we were at the front of an island where the waves were crashing the shoreline. Well Dunt makes a cast before I even get the trolling motor in the water and fish on. I net it and we've got our first fish of the day. I positioned the boat so the wind would push us down the shoreline. When we got to the back of the island we decided to hang out back there and hope for the wind to stop. We had some choice names for Mother Nature. I had checked the forecast right before I left and there was no mention of a hurricane.
While we were behind the island Dunt picks up his second smallie on the crankbait that's about 2 1/2 pounds. We stay back there for about an hour with no more fish. There's another island not far away so we move to it and try the same thing. Start at the front and let the wind push us. The boat's in 26 feet of water and we're casting towards the shore. I put on a deep diving crank that will go to 2o ft. Whammy! I get my first hit of the day. I get it to the boat, Dunt nets it and it comes in at just under 3 pounds. We get to the back of the island and get nothing. We fish one more island with no fish and decide we are going to make a big move. We fight the waves for about a half an hour and find a nice long fairly protected stretch of shoreline. Dunt makes a cast towards a bunch of big rocks and gets hit. The fish starts ripping drag and he's pumped. I see the flash and think it's a Large mouth but as it gets closer I notice it's a big Pickerel. Dunt is a little bummed. He thought he had a beast smallie. BUt we both agree it's still an awesome fish. I see a bed and make a cast. Bam! She's about 3 pounds. Another bed another fish. Dunt picks one up off a bed. I also pick up a fish cranking near some rocks. These are the last fish of the day.
I missed a fish on the buzzbait and then another on the Dog. Dunt missed one on the crank. We decide it's time to bounce. We were on the water for 12 hours in some seriously s***ty wind and still managed some fish. We are pretty impressed with ourselves. I'm going back tomorrow with Darren and hope the wind leaves us alone.

PART TWO
Darren and I hit the Quabbin Sunday with a questionable forecast. There was a mix of sun and clouds with some off and on wind that ended with rain. We managed to boat about 20 smallies ranging from a pound to just under 4 pounds. I'm still on the hunt for a beast but I'll catch 2 pound smallies all day and leave with a smile on my face. Catching them on deep (20ft) diving cranks is proving to be one of the most satisfying things for me. I can't wait to get back up there. It's a long day but always worth it.

Honey Hole
5/2/2013

Today I was supposed to fish a new pond with Dunt when I got out of work. He has Thursdays off so with all the sun and warmth his wife called in sick to work so they could grill and drink beers. So Dunt bailed out on me. I decided to hit my honey hole. When I got there it was 69 degrees out, mostly sunny and windy as hell. About a half an hour after I launch the temps start falling. It dropped about 10 degrees in an hour. I was throwing the square billed crank, a double bladed buzz bait, a jig and a texas rigged craw.
I will spend a lot of time working the shoreline with the buzz bait and the crank bait when it's windy. I started off in the shallow end of the pond but after an hour had no bites so I headed down to the other end where there is deeper water. I get over there and it starts raining. Since there was no rain in the forecast, my coat was in the car. I was wearing my bibs though.
I decided that the buzz bait was going to be the way to go. Water temp was 67. After a few casts I get a swipe from a dink. I briefly thought to throw the craw at him but decided against it. Good thing I did. Next cast I caught a pig. Usually when people think buzz baits they think your just cranking like crazy. The double blader can be fished really slow. I was cranking as slow as I could and still keep the thing on top. It;s making almost a plopping sound. This fish just rolled on it. I saw the whole thing and can't believe I was able to wait until I felt the fish. I always use trailer hooks on my buzz baits and this is why. Got him with the stinger. After a nice fight on my medium action rod I netted him and threw him in the live well so I could get my camera out. I was also hoping that I could catch another one and get a nice double pig pic. I had three more swipes at the buzzer but no hook ups. Overall I'd say it was a good day.

Lake D
4/17/2013

Today I got out of work early and after reading the writing on the wall, I headed out West. Home of Beaver Fever. I met up with Damon at his house. The plan was to take his boat to one of his favorite ponds. After about 15 minutes of driving we stopped at the side of the road. Damon removed my blind fold and my first question was where do we launch. After some fancy trailer driving the boat was in the water. Only an experienced driver would be able to do this so I'm not sure why I was blind folded.
As always I planned on crankin and jiggin. Damon's a swimbait kind of guy and he doesn't discriminate when it comes to size. I think he used that machine from "Honey I shrunk the kids" and miniaturized a white swimbait. Microbait.
Whenever I'm on somebody else's pond I just say lead on and I'll follow. We started off in a back cove that was loaded with wood (huh huh) and fish. We could see bait fish everywhere and bass cruising. Damon picked of a couple of dinks. We did see a big girl zipping around. We either spooked her or she was all horny. Water temps were getting in that range. 53 I think.
We headed back out to the main lake where the wind had kicked up pretty good. It seemed that they were relating to wood and there were lay downs everywhere. Damon was catching 1-1 1/2 pounders at a pretty good clip with the mini swimmer. My first bite on the KVD 1.5 was a sunfish. Damon grabbed a pickerel and then had some kind of relationship with it on the front deck. I had to delete the video because it seemed inappropriate for most viewers. Unfortunately that memory is etched in my brain forever. Thanks Damon, I'll never see pickerel in the same light ever again. After the Pickerel fiasco we came up on a giant snapper and of course Damon wants a piece of him too so he grabs it by the tail and pulls it up onto the side of the boat. The thing was huge and pissed of. That dude's a little touched.
Moving on. We're hitting the wood. I get on the board with a pick and refuse to treat him nice. A quick hook removal and back in. After what seems forever I finally grab a bass on a small bomber splatterback square bill. He weighs about a pound and has a broken jaw. Poor guy.
On our way back to the launch the shoreline was just littered with downed trees and deep water. I cast my favorite square bill of all. It's an xcalibur sexy shad about the same size as a KVD 1.5 (always change the hooks). I cast that thing right along the trunk of a tree and knock it off all the branches coming back. Wham!!! A nice fish slams it and I give it the old Hollywood Hookset. I get him up to the boat, Damon nets him and I get a weight. 3.9 on my digital scale. This makes me feel better. Next cast. Next tree. Next fish. Wham. Back to back casts and I pick up maybe a 2 pounder. Damon grabs a couple more of the cookiecutter fish and I get a big old perch to end my day.
This was another classic example of two guys who met on Maff getting together to hang out, enjoy each others company, maybe learn something new (I always do when I talk to Damon. The guys like a fricken encyclopedia). And most importantly we had fun fishing.
