Lower Mystic
12/5/2012

I noticed Shawn put up a trip and picture of a nice December fish, so it motivated me to try and keep up. I didn't risk falling out of my boat though, so did some shore fishing at the lower Mystic. Was surprised at how productivity a day it was. Crawfish color crank baits worked slow and a football jig.

Jay threw in a white jig with a bright pink weight when i ordered some jigs last month. I am pretty sure he threw it in as an extra, because i don't think I'd have bought it!

But he'smarter than me when jig fishing. The baitfish running up the Aberjona River from the Upper Mystic Lake, so I finally took the jig out and threw it under the train bridge (community spot for folks that follow the site). Sure enough... wham, about 4lbs.

Last Saturday after the rain Friday the river running and the fish moved up the river, caught about 6 or so in 30 minutes. That was all my wife could take.. even though i talked her into holding up the 4lbs with the pink jig (no way I was going to admit to using the pink bait!)

Karl has put up a couple post previous about this spot.. a community hole for folks that follow the site

Worked the pads with flipping baits, bright sun and no wind. All the bites were deep in the pads, except for one under a dock.

After pulled boat, herring fry forming around the dam on upper side and several schools of bass cruising below the dam on the lower lake side. Next trip will work herring schools.

Similar pattern as last week. Working shallow baits over weeds (KVD 1.5, spinner baits) until the sun bright, then flippin into the pads.

About 20 fish for the morning. Small ones over the weeds, and then bigger ones once they bunched up under the pads when the sun bright

Great weekend of weather and fishing. Hit Horn Pond and Upper Mystic this weekend. Best spot overall was a long point that comes off the island at Horn Pond. Several bass, plus a few other types I included in the pictures, plus one Xtra pic

Fished Upper Mystic from 4:30 to 8:00pm (couldn't join the tourney due to my sons Lacrosse games this morning). Most fish caught near the dam on jigs or shaky head, and then a few on KVD 1.5 in the weeds.

Fished Horn Pond this afternoon. Water temp was 48 to 49 degrees, and water murkier than past few weeks, plus the water has come up some (going over the outflow damn). Primarily fished steep banks where the boat is in 25-30 feet of water. Caster to th ebank and slow hopped the jig-n-pig down the bank into 20 feet of water.

Every major deep water point held at least one fish. I was working the banks in between, but then just started hitting the points and skipping the in between unless picked up some struture on humming bird.

Couple pictures attached, most bass 2-4 lbs.

Couple hours on Horn Pond, had to stay near the bank since the wind was howling, still bounced around the entire time. Picked up several fish, picture of the best one attached.

Caught all the fish in 7-10 feet of water over weed beds, outside edge on a lipless crank bait. This one pictured was a real fatty, and hit the lure like a ton of bricks. Guessing the fish are fattening up for winter. Would have been nice to find a few more like this, but I was glad to have just survived the wind & chop today

Bass eating the stocked trout

10/2/2010

Couple days ago several of the local ponds / lakes were stocked with trout, and the larger bass have started eating the trout.

Using a large swimbait (10 inch SPRO BBZ1) with a very slow retrieve. The bite is slow, only one every hour or so, but given the size of the bait, every fish is big. When you do get a hit, the adrenline pumps.. its a big one. You will also end up with a sore arm casting these baits. I actually practiced last week, and my freshwater rod is just too light, so I pulled out my saltwater spinning rod.

Trout Fed (I mean stocked) Bass Ponds

I picked up a couple trout style swimbaits (Rage and a SPRO BBZ1) anticipating the trout stocking that is supposed to take place over the next few weeks. I was wondering if the bass feed on the trout... well I wonder no longer. They haven't even stocked Horn Pond yet, but the I think the bass are waiting for them.

The two I picked up were both in the 2 lbs range, and hit an 8-10 inch trout swimbait. I was a little surpised they were this small hitting a large swimbait. So looking forward to when they actually do stock the ponds, will have my my big SPRO BBZ1 out there. I am confident we'll see some 'lunk-a' come out.

Practiced a little with the SPRO BBZ1, people thought I was throwing rocks in the water.

Horn Pond, Woburn, MA
9/18/2010 - 9/19/2010

Had another two solid days on Horn Pond, a couple hours each day. Worked the lake similar to last week; 18 to 20 feet of water where there's weeds or grass. The action was slower than last week, but probably caught 20 fish over both days, all LMB and yellow perch.

The best part though is that some of the bass were the largest of the summer. The bite from the larger bass seems to be on for now, hopefully will hold for a couple weeks.

Used mostly lipless cracnk baits, but in the heavier weeds switched to spinner baits. Saturday we were there in the afternoon, and then Sunday in the morning, but the fish in the same spots both days.

Had one of those special days on the water with a pattern that worked consistently all afternoon. Running lipless crankbaits (Strike King shad) over weeds in about 10 -20 feet of water. Every cast we either pulled grass/weeds off the lure or had a fish (even the one Crappie).

Once again though as co-angler in the back of the boat i couldn't outfish my partner.

We probably caught 12-15 bass (good day when stop keeping track. Photos of the best ones attached.

Horn Pond, Upper Mystic Lake
9/5/2010 - 9/6/2010

First trip to Horn Pond with my son (8 yrs) at 6am (I think Fishingreek was already there working the island, trolling motor on the front of a small john type boat?). Caught 2 LMB just north of the point that is near the island; the slope to flat area point between the island and the causeway working a white spinnerbait. Had a LMB near the wood between the causeway and ramp slam my spinnerbait, and then break-off at the boatside. Got to see him, nice fish probably 3-4lbs plus. Motivated me enough to switch my line today from 8 to 12 lbs mono. Day was saved for my son when he found a school of black crappie on a submerged tree in the cove just west of the island. About every cast he nailed one using Gulp crappie nibbles. He caught about a dozen and we could have probably caught more but Iwas getting worn out taking them off.

Monday worked the dam and weeds on Upper Mystic. About 6 LMB bass, two by the dam and then others in the weeds and pads flipping into the holes and edges. All in the small to maybe 1.5 lbs size. Nothing to get too excited about. Fun working the weeds when the wind not too high, but pushes you and and ruins the spot when blowing hard.

will get the digital camera ready now that making some posts

with the wind blowing and rain coming down (i know, crazy to be out there) the large mouth on both sides of the dam more aggressive than seen since the spring. The rain and wind must have cooled the water and got them excited.

SMB chasing small herring on lower lake, fun to cast into crashing schools using a white spinner-bait
