Lake Winthrop
2/23/2013

Well after a 4 week delay of cancelling due to ice conditions, I finally felt that we could safely hold the Dioxin Derby event on Lake Winthrop. !5 people entered this our 38th annual event, a low number of particpants due to iffy ice and the ongoing postponment. Lots of action all around the lake with a incoming front and storm. I went through 2 dz shiners myself and caught 9 bass and 7 pics. Size for me was not a factor as big bass went 2.56 lbs and the pic were less then keeper size except one 17 incher. Newbie to the event Dan, brought a 5.24 lb Lm to the scale early, which held up as lunker for the event, and his pal Chris ended up with big pic of 2.6 lbs. Veteran Dioxin fisher Pete v. had an interesting experience hooking a 2 1/2 lb Lm on 2 of his tills. The bass grabbed and ran with one bait, over to his next tilt where he sucked that bait down as well and took off with both!
Great time getting out on the ice with all my buds and congrats to Dan and Chris with big fish!

Am outing before the Superbowl. Fished 7 to noon. 3 small bass 1 pic for my efforts. Lots of flags due to the small bait size, I figure some trips from perch as bait was ok and only inches of line was taken.

Lake Winthrop
1/26/2013

This the original Dioxin Derby date, was postponed till 2/2. I felt obligated to be there to inform anyone attending of the new date. Had a dozen shiners with me , sooo...

Ice had just froze over Thurs. morn, and thickness ranged from a solid 6-7, out to 2 where it had recently been open.

From 7-12 noon I caught 4 bass and three pics. Bass lunker went 3 1/4 lbs, with the others in the 13-14 inch range. Pics went 10-15 inches

Cold weather should seal up lake by next weekend, and hopefully the short warm spell predicted this week will not effect ice conditions too much.

Fort Meadow
10/6/2012

End of season tourny for BVBA was open to a few potential new members and we were able to use a local connection and use a private ramp to fish Ft Meadow. Everyone caught fish and all had limits to weigh in.All bags of 5 bass weighed in between 12 and 10.5 lbs. The exception was Greggs bag that included lunker at 5.35lbs, and topped the scales at 16.55. Brandens bag of 12 lbs took 2nd, and he did not let the fact that his big motor would not start stop him from fishing! These 2 kicked bass and I would love to see them come on board to fish with us next year. Good job guys!

Wallum

Deb and I spent the afternoon on Wallum. Had the lake to ourselves with a few other fishermen arriving late in the afternoon. Sunny calm conditions allowed for a beautiful late summer outing. 4 bass caught from different spots on the lake with each taking a different bait. 4 inch wacky senko took a bass shallow in rocks, a watermelon lizard c-rigged enticed a smallie out in 12 ft of water, a 5 inch cut tail worm took a lm in 8 ft off beach, and a drop shot minnow bait lured a sm lm in 10 ft. All fish 12 -14 inches. Nice un broke off on slamming a rigged lizard, shoulda checked the leader.

9/9/2012

BVBA last official tourny. The Murky waters called us and we arrived. Cloudy damp day, with the showers stopping on our arrival. Water still dark, with 8 inches visability. I fished for 8 hrs without boating a keeper! Goose egg. 2 others shared the goose egg blues, and all others had something to weigh in. Pete, the onlyone to fit through the bridge, to the east side, managed to have the only limit. His last keeper coming at exactly 2:59 pm as we all were pulling into the launch. Good show Pete! Matt who had never ventured to prefish won with 3. His big fish was a 3.29lber making a bag of 7.43.
Eddie came in 2nd with 2 fish, and a 4.61 lunker. Pete took 3rd with his 5 going 6.83 lbs. Everyone reported tough fishing, Bobby proposed that we not return here too soon, if ever. Bob did land a 1 1/4 pd rock, caught on a dropshot? Did the rock come up for it Bob?
Ed's 2nd place finish won the Mr Bass title for himself, with his consistent efforts this season, giving him a 5 pt spread over 2nd place Bob, and 3rd place Pete.good job Guys!
As always great fishing with you all this year, and looking forward to our Ft Meadow event and next year!

Went to Monponsett to see if conditions improved, to see if I could get through bridge, and to hopefully come up with a game plan for our tourny on Sunday. Water color improved, to the point where you can see a white spinnerbait to 8 inches instead of the previosly reported 6. I bent back hook barbs knowing I did not want to sting any of the interested bass. I did not bend a hook on a bk/bl jig, and had a 1 1/2lber pick it up off the bottom. Found only serious bites came out away from cover in deeper water 8-9 ft, and on or off humps 3-5 ftdeep. Results 1 bass (oops), I would not risk any boat damage in tunnel, and a half assed game plan for Sunday, that I hope can put 5 in the boat. We shall see.

Bro Joe and I went to check out BVBAs next tourney site. No one in the club has been here as yet. We found the lake in full algae bloom and with its dank water a white spinnerbaits disappears in 6 inches of water. All day, with full sun we never saw the bottom. Total bass for the day was 8, with the 5 I caught going 9 1/2 lbs, and Joe had 2 2 lbers.joe missed a monster that we never saw, but he played it well for a couple minutes, when with his drag screaming his line broke back on the spool. Shoulda changed that line. My bites came on a spinnerbaits, drop shot 4 in senko, sidewinder worm, and a creature bait. we shall see.

Lake St Catherine Vt.
8/6/2012

Stayed over an extra day in Vt and spent my b-day checking out St Catherine with Club Buddy Larry.Spent 4 hrs on the water exploring and did some fishing though again with few fish caught. We each landed 2 keepers in the 2-3 lb range with all others shorts. Lots of good looking water here though they seem to have a anti weed campaign ongoing with harvesting and treatments. This will be another good lake to return to.

Lake Bomoseen
8/3/2012 - 8/5/2012

Weekend BVBA club outing took us to Central Vt where we fished Lake Bomoseen for 3 days. I was surprised at how slow the action was here having fished it 16 years earlier, and expecting alot more bigger bass. Prefishing on Friday I spent the day alone exploring and looking over water and different areas. Fished with a variety of baits and decided to go into the tourny using dropshot and c-rigs, as the only bites and fish came on these 2 methods.
Saturday along w/ weekend partner JohnK started out good and I picked up 5 keepers early, but alas all Saulen sized in the 12 inch range. Stuck to dropshot on drops and the thick weed edges and culled throughout the day for ounces more. Day 1 resulted in a weight of 5.71. John K held off converting to dropshot and rigging and weighed in 1 small LM.
Sunday started off with a bang with solid fish on my first cast picking up a good un that I was sure would be lunker! It grabbed my dropshotted swimbait rigged on 6lb test and buried itself into the thick 8ft weed edge, where I hovered over it and finally coax it out, a f...ing Pike! Pissa, here we go. Johnny picked up a sm pike minutes later and a few short sm + lms were caught before all action died on our first choice spot. The rest of the day we fought 25-30 mph wind and flash thunder storms, had a very tough time with any bites and arrived to weigh in soaking wet. Picked up bass #5 for the day at 2:45, luckily, and Johnny felt fortunate enough to have a single fish to weigh in for day 2.
Few others did well, but Brian who stuck to his pattern in the north end way up beyond Floating Bridge, (no longer floating), came in both days with the biggest bags of Lms, 13.63 + 15.09 . He stuck to the thick pad and weed cover of the northern shallows dunking and frogging for the better quality bites which paid off. Eddie came in second, staying out on the main lake fishing 15-25 ft drops and edges with a c-rig, resulting in bags of 12.5 + 6.52. My 2 bags of mediocre bass at 5.71 +5.68 lbs tied me for 3rd place with Bob who had caught the big bass of the weekend, a 4.06 lber. 3rd place went to me as I had 10 bass to Bobs 8, sorry Bob!
Thanks to our host Todd at the Hampton Motel, and to Joe at the Bomoseen country store, fortifying us each morning with Vts. Best Breakfast sandwiches!
Good Times had with my club buddies, fishing, eating and drinking! Love these weekend getaways.

Conn. River Hinsdale N.H.
7/21/2012

Great fishery, great place to fish, could not prove it by my efforts! BVBA tourny to the Lower conn. river N.H. + Vt was really looked forward to, but alas, I sucked a lot of wind. My apologies to my partner Lee, as I did not put us on fish. The game plan on staying south of Brattleboro and hooking up with a few good size Lms did not happen. 1st spot really looked good with weed gravel and fist size rock, close to the channel, but only resulted in Lee picking up a sm pike. Opposite side with wood along shore, nothing. Quick ride to Vernon dam area, shallows, current, wood, coves, 3hrs spent and 2 walleyes the result. High point of the day, Lee landed 1st walleye a nice 4 lber! Return to 1st coupla spots and Lee was able to boat a Sm smallie in 2 ft of water behind a rock. Traveled beyond the rte. 9 bridge on the N.H. side fishing wood and docks where Lee was able to pick up a 2.75 lb Lm off a tree in skinny water that I had repeatly cast a wacky senko to. By 2:30 I only had scored a walleye and many short sms. I landed a keeper sm at 2:35 that Lee convinced me to measure and I was able to save myself from a goose egg with a .87 lb monster! Baits that did not work for me were: Mojo lizard, spidergrub, sidewinder worm, and crigged baits. Lee's fish came on a finesse bl worm that he threw into 2-4 ft of water.
Big Bags came from up north, John K winning his first tourny with an awesome bag of Sms weighing in at 13.16 lbs and Ed scored a bag of Sms at 11.89, good for 3rd place.2nd and 4th place came from down south with Pete and Matt scoring 4 lms each with weights of 12.43 and 11.74lbs.Pete had a 5.34lber, his personal best bass!, and Matt had a 5.3. Good job guys!

Hinsdale conn river N.H.
7/7/2012

I got a chance to get away and fish with my good buddy Ed on the Conn. River LAST SAT. truely a treat as he got to show me the river at 65 mph (my eyes have not stopped fluttering)and we scored a lot of smallies in the 2 - 3 lb range. Typical of the river the situation was smallies to the north, and though we did not get back down to the south before 1 pm we managed a single lm down south. I caught my first walleye a 1 1/2 lb monster and got to see, Rapidly a lot of the river, which we get to fish next week in a club tourny. Our smallies came from skinny water in the 2-3 ft range and wood was key to locating them. Baits used were senkos and my trusty mojo lizard, which did not catch up in the snags as expected. I rolled a big fish down south in the power station discharge, species unknown, and Ed caught a small Lm on a frog. Can't wait to go back and catch some more river Sms, but I may stay south and try for some early Lms 1st. Great day with a great friend that I do not get to fish with enough! Thanks Ed!

Lake Wentworth N.H.
6/23/2012

Yea I should put this on the N.H. Finder but it seems as though all those guys want to share is recipes, so...

Bvba tourny went to Wentworth Lake in Wolfboro N.H. this past weekend, and though there was a mixup w/ attendance all participants had no problem bringing in a 2 fish limit. Larry and I stayed out fishing the deeper sides of off shore humps looking for big smallies, but though we caught 40-45 smallies between us, and had the 2 biggest smallies at weigh in, no real big ones were caught by anyone!
The winner was someone who persued the Lm population on this lake known for it's Sms. Pete found Lms in a river and fought off the big pickeral to score two lms for a 2 fish weight of 6 1/2 lbs and a lunker of 3.8 lbs. Good job Pete on your 1st club 1st place finish on a lake you have never been on! 2nd place went to Bob with a 4 lb bag 1 Lm and 1 Sm, I took third with the 2 biggest smallies of 1.6, and 1.65 lbs. Big sms could not be found. Most of our smallies came on C-rigged lizards, with fish being caught at every location we hit. This is a great lake though the size of smallies do not justify it and on a beautiful weekend day with water temps in the 80's and perfectly calm results should have been better.

Chauncy
6/10/2012

Sunday Morning spent on the perfectly calm waters of Chauncy Lake. Very tough time catching fish as from 5:30 to 9 all I had boated was a 3 lb pic that appeared out of no where and gobbled my sidewinder worm. I had a few taps (kivers?) and a coupla blowups on a frog (more pics?) but no bass other than 1 I saw cruising shallow. Between 9-10 realizing with the reduction in weed growth and having had no luck in weedy areas I pulled out my trusted mojo carolina rigged lizard and found a population of bass along a shaded shoreline in 5-8 ft of water. I had a dozen good bites, dropped 3 and landed 2 bass, a 2 1/2 and a 3. My faith renewed in Chauncy.

Beautiful Day was had with my BVBA buddies! Bass bite was a little weird for me but after a coupla hrs, after breaking off a good un, I found Lms along the west shoreline interested in my Sidewinder worm loaded w/ a glass rattle. My fish were in tight to shore and usually near small patches of weeds. Bite was very light and sometimes a few were missed. Most lms were keepers as only 4 shorts were caught. Brian came in 1st w/ a 11lb bag, Lee 2nd w/ a bag of 4 going10.5 lbs, and Matt was 3rd w/ a bag of 9.64 lbs

Jared had lunka, a 4.19 lb Lm.

Lake Manchaug
5/26/2012 - 6/1/2012

Week long stay at the Hawk cabin on the western shore of Lake Manchaug was just what the Doctor ordered for a real relaxing vacation with Deb. Bass were caught on every outing and though no monsters were caught, it was a delight to have the boat in the water and ready to go in a moments notice. Big fish of the week was a 3 1/2 lb Lm and most fish were in the 2 - 2 1/4 lb size. Some SM were caught but were only 10 -12 inchers. Best Bait was found to be a 6 inch watermelon red zoom lizard rigged w/ a peged mojo weight fished 3 -8 ft deep on or near rocks. Weed growth here is down, due to the winter draw down. There is a new post I noted at the ramp for honor system launch fee, 6$ for Ma. Res, and 12$ for out of staters.
Highlight of the week was catching double 1 1/2 lbers with my fisherwomen!

5/12/2012

BVBA 2nd tourny held on a beautiful May day with Bluebird skies and light wind. There were 3 Five fish limits weighed in, with bags of 15lbs, 13.25, and 10. After a slow start, my partner Jared found some bass in tight to grass along a shady shore, and we scored 4 bass there. late morning we found bass (and alot of toothys) out on a massive flat. we took on a few more Lms with quite a few shorts. From noon on we concentrated on the rock piles and adjacent flats where we proceeded to pick up a few more that I was able to cull for a few ounces, and Jared continued to soremouth more of the pickeral population. At 2;30 Jared picked up a 3lber on rock at the shoreline near the ramp, which was big bass onboard the Kahuna. Jareds fish mostly came on the wacky senko, and all of my fish were on a scaled down c-rig with a 1/4 oz mojo sinker and a brush hog and gr pumpkin zoom lizard combo. Green snot slime came in covering baits almost every cast that touch bottom. Lunker was a 4.36 That John K brought to the scale, and Bob and Eddie weighed in 2 nice bags of 3lbers. My 10lb bag got me a 3rd place finish.

Sunday morning outing, 6 -1030, to a close by place that I have never fished, Fisherville Pond and the Blackstone river. On launching my first fish ends up being a 11 inch smallie. (Didn't know they could survive here) Did a lot of exploring and went up river a ways where I caught 3 lms of 1 to 1 1/2 lb size along deeper banks. 2 other Lms I caught that morning came from the deeper pond water relating to some wood. No fish or bites even below where the river comes in to the dam. Baits used texas and wacky 5 inch senkos

Great Herring Pond
4/29/2012

1st Tourny of 2012 season started out a little chilly with air temps at 38 and the water at 52, making for cold feet at a very shallow launch. I arrived with 4wd working this trip! Many fish caught by all members, with everyone reporting to have caught 20-30 bass though most were under 12 inches. only one angler did not weigh in a limit. Lm and sm all ran on the small side/lunker sm of 2.15 and Lm at 2.8. Bobby and I did ok with Bob in 3rd and I came in 4th. Techniques that worked for us were my scaled down carolina rig with 1/4 oz mojo weight and a 4 inch herring colored senko. Bob scored mostly with a wacky senko and the other bait that worked for me was a 6inch lizard.
Great outing with all my bass buddies and the weather though cool, was perfect as the wind stayed down to 5-10mph most of the day and the bass though small kept us busy.

Trip to prefish GHP with Bro Joe. Many small sm caught (20), with about a dozen of legal length up to 2lbs. 13 Lms were caught all of legal size with biggest going 3lbs. all caught with senkos and lizards. Trip ended in a tow truck coming to get us as I found that 4wd could not be engaged and I buried my rear axle at the ramp. Thanks to Derek of Vaughn's towing for the extraction!

Took boat out for a float check this awesome spring day, with temps expected to reach mid eighties, my bride decided to join me. Water level was down about 1 1/2 ft and the Flint pond ramp will be very tough if there isn't any rain soon. Water temps ranged in mid 50's on the main lake and was in the mid 60's in flint pond and shallow coves with the highest recorded at 68. I zero'd in on 2-3 ft depths and found some bass active and took four keepers 1-2 lbs on texas senkos and a Zman frog. 2 good pic were also had, a 2 and 3lber. any bass taken out on main lake were short and not really active.
