North shore hot spot
8/30/2014

James and I got out for a full day Saturday. We hit a new lake for us that a friend of his told us about. First thing in the morning was good. We both caught some fish with James catching a nice 2 lb smallie. We thought we were in for a nice day. Around 7:30am the bite just shut completely off. We fished till about 11:30 and made the decision to leave and finish the day closer to home at one of our local hot spots. That move paid off. We had each caught a few small ones, but the bite was slow. We kept grinding it out, and with about a half hour left in the day James locked on to a monster. He ripped it thru the pads and landed a 5.1lb pig. It made the day for sure. Five minutes later I hooked into a monster and broke him off. After a frustrating day for me, I was on suicide watch at this point. Ready to call it a day, both of us exhausted, he'd caught a pig, and I just had my heart broken by a fish. I retied and said "let's just hit this little patch of pads, then get out of here". My first flip into the pads and a get a hard hit. I set the hook on a big one and he bull dogs me into the pads. The way the day had gone for me so far, I was sure I was gonna loose him. We trolled over to him and while I kept pressure on him, James reached down and grabbed him. He was covered in pads, and when they were cleared off I finally felt relieved. It was a 5.4lb slob. We both caught 5 lbers ten minutes apart, right at the end of the day. A day neither of us will forget.

Central MA hot spot
8/3/2014

My friend Steve gave me a tip on a lake in central MA where he's been killing them, so James, Jaden and I decided to bypass our regular spot and give it a shot. It paid off big time. I caught the first few fish of the morning, including a 4.14 lb slob that engulfed a Lucky Craft Sammy. I was so excited, I said " I don't need to catch another fish all day and I'll still be happy." We'll guess what, I didn't. You will never hear those words come out of my mouth again as long as I live. From that point forward James caught fire. He steadily caught fish all day totaling more than ten. Included in the ten was a massive 5.13 pig he caught flipping an overhang. It is his new personal best. Jaden also did good with at least five fish on the senko. All in all it was another great day on a new body of water. Thanks Steve for the tip, and congrats to James for his new personal best.

I got out with James and his son Jaden on Saturday. We had a great day all around. Between the three of us we caught well over 20 fish. The frog was the deal today, but we caught fish on senkos, spinner baits, swimbaits, and Flippin with creature baits as well. I got the party started with a 4lber on the frog. Then for the next 4 hours James and Jaden banged em. Catching multiple fish including a nice 3 and a half Jaden got on a senko. James also lost a monster that had his heavy action rod bent in half. I caught back up catching some nice fish on the frog and the swimbait. With about two hours left to fish, I made a deal with Jaden that if he could catch one on the frog, I would give him one of my favorite lures. From that point on he didn't put the frog down. With about a half hour left I had a big blow up and miss on the frog. Without hesitation Jaden threw right in the spot where I had the hit, and Boom! He landed his first ever frog fish. The fish hit that frog so hard, it literally turned it inside out. Papa was proud, and even though he stole MY fish, I gotta say I was too. Jaden says he's gonna be a bass pro some day. I believe him.

I got out by myself for about 4 hours Sunday morning. It was nice. I was the only boat on the water for the first few hours. It was a good day. I caught my biggest of the year so far with a 4.11. I caught 3 others, all in the pound and a half range. A few pickerel mixed in, and a vicious little sunfish that actually ate my spinnerbait. I caught the pig on a spinnerbait, casting a shallow flat. That fish made my day.

Today were some of the worse conditions I have ever fished in. But after yesterday, I had to give it another shot, and it didn't dissapoint. The wind was still blowing from the Northeast, causing some major current. Same idea as yesterday. I was throwing a half oz spinnerbait into the wind, and slow rolling it back. I ended up with 9 fish in an hour and a half. The size was way down from yesterday for some reason, but the numbers were still there. My five best were around 10lbs. It was crazy with that wind, but when your catching fish you can barely feel it.

Today was an unreal fishing trip. I took the dog down to the lake and obviously I brought a rod to see if anything was going on. I wasnt expecting much, as this storm is rolling in. I figured I'd try slow rolling a spinnerbait in all that current the wind was making. It worked, to say the least. I caught 10 bass in an hour. My five best weighed in at close to 14lbs. I left when it started to snow, and my dog Penny was starting to drive me crazy. It killed me to leave, but I cant complain.

I got my biggest of the year so far today. I've never caught a fatter bass in my life. It must have been feeding all day. Youll see what I mean when you see the picture. I was crawling a texas rigged creature bait over a rocky flat. Every time I would hit a rock, I would hop it over nice any easy. This pig hammered it when I brought it over a small rock pile. I did not have a scale, but I believe she was over 5. I also got another one about a pound and a half. He's lucky I caught him and not Miss Piggy!

Got out for a few hours around noon today to try and break in my new rod (Daiwa Zillion, it's sweet!). It was very windy, so I used a 1/2 oz weight and texas rigged a creature bait. I slow crawled it along the bottom around rocks and structure. I ended up with two quality bass and two pickerel. The biggest bass was in the 4lb range. All in all a pretty good day.

Normally I would never throw top water bait in March, but as you all know this year has been very weird and warm. I was seeing bait balls exploding out of the water every 30 seconds. It was pretty cool. The bass were terrorizing them. They were actually tiny bluegill, about the size of a half dollar. All the fish were in this huge shallow flat that is 2 feet at the deepest. There was so much algee in this spot that all you could throw was topwater. I tied on a Yum Moneyhound(Black Lab). For those of you who dont know, It's a weedless topwater bait. It kind of looks like a hot dog. Great bait! So I cast it out and start walking the dog, and WHAM! First cast I land a nice pound and a half largemouth. It was on after that. I would wait to see a swarm of blugill jump out of the water for there life, then cast out past them, and bring it thru. It worked every time. It was awesome. I ended up with about 10 fish in 2 hours. All on the Money hound. They were all between 1 and 2 lbs, but still fun as hell. If my bait didnt eventually fall apart, I would have been out there all day. What a treat to get them on top in March!

Got out from shore today with Meat for about an hour. It was rainy and cold, and not much was going on. We threw jigs around wood and had a couple of hits. Lost a lot of baits, and landed one fish. I got a big piggy of a pickeral. It looked to go about 4lbs. I was lucky to get it in. My line was almost cut from those sharp teeth.

I've been fishing ever since I've seen pockets of open water. Just about every day, I take my dog Penny for a run in the woods/lake, and ove course, I bring a rod. I've tried everything from slow rolling crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, worms, etc. I haven't had a bite in over a month. Today I tied on a blue and black bitsy flip jig with a black paca craw trailor, and flipped it all over the place. Got nothing at all my usual spots, untill I hiked down the shoreline quite a ways. This is a spot I have fished a few times, but it's a PIA to get to. It paid off with the first cast. I threw the jig out in front of a big lay down, twitched it a few times, and finally got that feeling I've been looking for for over a month. It whacked it. I can't tell you how good it felt. I set the hook and got it in. Looked to be between 2 to 3 lbs. Somewhere in that range. It had that jig so far down it's throught I could barely get it out. Hopefully this is a sign that they might be moving up shallow again. I fished for about 15 more minutes, but got nothing. This must be what a drug addict feels like after getting high, because now I need to do it again. You know what I mean.

Does it get any better than this? Ice fishing in the morning, and the Pats win the AFC Championship in the afternoon.
I got out for my third day in a row of ice fishing. I fished from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Ended up with three bass, 4 perch on jigs, and one pickeral. The biggest was a 3lb bass. I had my first flag before I had all my traps in the water. I love when that happens. Hopefully we will have enough ice in a couple of weeks so I can repeat this before the Superbowl!!!

I got out for a few hours today from shore. I ended up with 2 bass and a nice sized pickerel. The nicer bass was somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds. I caught all of the fish on jigs near wood. I also had a monster pickerel take a jig clean off with one viscious hit. It was a nice jig too, that bastard!

Went to the lake today for a few hours. Started off with a shakey head and got a small bass on about the third cast. Fished for about another hour after that and got nothing. Switched up to a heavier jig head as the wind picked up quite a bit. I threw it in front of a tree with a fork. Moved it a bit and felt a nice bump. Set the hook and felt a nice bit of resistence. As I reeled in the fish dove and I got hung up on the fork in the tree. I could feel him shaking his head, but couldnt see him. I thought he might be able to free himself, but no such luck. I broke him off without getting to see him. Called it a day after that. Wish I could have seen what I had on. It felt like a good one.

I got out for an hour today between 2:30 and 3:30 at my local honey hole. I pitched a jig out in front of a tree and got a thump. I knew it was a big fish from the violent hit. I set the hook and the fight was on. I thought I had another big bass, but to my suprise it ended up being a monster pickerel. This thing had shoulders. Great fight. I moved down the bank to another spot and ended up landing a fat little bass on a creature bait and a shakey head. It had a crawfish in it's gullet. You can see how big it's gut is for such a short stumpy fish. He definetly had the feedbag on.
