I thought I had taken my last kayak trip of the season but I couldn't resist an opportunity to spend a nice day on the water. I was hoping to use my fishfinder to get accurate water temps and perhaps locate some bait. So I arrive at the pond, unload and realize I've forgotten my battery. Anyway, hit the water around 9AM, temps around 40 degrees with a moderately light wind. It took me several hours to find fish. At first I tried the southeast corner by the island w/o a bite. Then paddled west along the southern shore to the rocks, same result. Then I decided to paddle across to the north shore, trolling a shallow diving stick bait. Nothing. On the north shore I decided to throw out a Gulp minnow on a bobber to see if I could scare up something. While waiting for something to take the bait I was tossing a 4" shallow diver. I had just cast the crankbait when I see the bobber go down. I reach for the rod to set the hook, nothing. So I pick up my crank rod again and lo an behold a bass has attached itself to my lure. Not a big fish but a fish nonetheless, and obviously willing to hit a non-moving bait. At least I had gotten the skunk off and I had a bait that I knew would work. I had also christened my new Revo SX. So I drifted and fished with a renewed sense of confidence. Still, no more bites. By this time the wind had died down to almost nothing and the pond was dead calm. It was so nice just to be out that I paddled around looking down through the crystal clear water marking boulders and other structures for next season. I eventually made it to the northeast end of the pond by the AMC club, still throwing my shallow diver. I'm using a very slow retrieve, just enough to impart action to the lure, with an occasional jerk and pause. Finally I get a solid bump, fish on, a medium sized pickerel. A few casts later another pickerel, and another, and another. Daylight was starting to fade so I headed in. I finished up the day with 1 bass and 4 picks and a great day on the water. No photos, sorry, but there were no photo-worthy fish. | - |

If you fish at Ponki please make a mental note of this report. We need to stop these guys.
I hit up Ponki yesterday for a few hours of relaxation and even managed to catch three small pickerel. Sadly, my relaxation came to an abrupt end when I realized that some dick heads were running a commercial fishing operation. On several occasions this year I have seen two guys fishing from the island. They paddle out in a small, dark green inflatable raft and set up several rods with bobbers and live bait. I have even spoken to them once when I saw them haul in a really nice pickerel and asked them to hold it up so I could get a look at it. Of course, everything they catch goes into the white bucket.
Judging from the language they use to speak to one another I would guess that they are Russian or eastern European but they speak perfectly serviceable English. And based on what they told me about events and other places they have fished, I infer they have been living in the U.S. for well over a decade. The point is they are not ignorant of the rules and regulations of fishing, therefore any disregard for them is obviously willful. I did, however, feel the need to remind them that the state has a mercury warning posted at Ponki and they should seriously consider limiting their catch for health reasons. Lotta good that did.
Anyway, I will say that I have never witnessed them take anything undersized or do anything illegal...until yesterday. As I paddled toward the island I saw that one guy was on the island, the other guy was paddling around in the raft, nothing amiss but not their usual behavior. As I got closer I saw the guy on the island was tending four rods. Then I saw the guy in the raft throw something overboard, a big white float, an empty milk jug; he was using it as a bobber. I looked around and realized there were a total of six of these "bobbers" situated over about an acre or more of water. Needless to say, I called the ranger station at Blue Hills to report them. I didn't stick around to find out if the rangers actually showed up.
I know these guys are at Ponki a lot so there's a pretty good chance that some of you will also run into them. I would suggest that you keep the number for the ranger station in your phone. With some luck maybe we can give them a very expensive day of fishing. | - |

A bright chilly morning but thanks to the end of daylight savings time I was able to get an extra hour of sleep. Boy, the river was so different from the kayak tourney we had there in August. Then it was low, slow and dirty, dirty, dirty. Yesterday, after last week's hurricane, the water was extremely high and merely tea stained. This time out I decided to fish the bay. I've only fished the bay once before (in August) and hooked into just two bass. A week later, during the kayak tourney, I went upstream well past the bridge and that's where I caught my pike. Most of the guys who fished the bay during the tourney did poorly. But yesterday was a little different. I began working the bay in a clockwise direction throwing a lipless crankbait and right away hit on two smallish bass, then a pick, then something decent that threw the hook halfway to the boat, then a 3lb 2oz bass, then a 1lb 10oz bass, then two more picks. After that the wind came up and the bite died. The big bass was caught along the weedline but all other fish were hanging out 20-30 feet from shore.
The only negative to the day was that there were quite a few boats fishing the bay. It felt pretty crowded. Note to self - in the future fish this water on weekdays only. |

Hit up Ponki yesterday for what I thought would be an nice day of fishing. Had the pond to myself all day. Got on the water at 11 and started trolling a 3" jointed Rapala as I paddled to one of my bass spots. Two pickerel hits almost immediately, both decent. Made it to my bass spot, almost no weed cover left thanks to the hurricane. I started throwing a frog and got a few rises and half-hearted hits but no hookups. After an hour working the entire area I decided to get back to the crankbaits so I paddled to more open water and drifted with the wind. Pickerel hit almost immediately. They were clearly on the feed because most of them had full bellies and they were being gluttons. After several hours the wind began to blow at a steady 12-15 mph and the water was getting kinda rough so I decided to call it quits. No bass but still a fun day with lots of good sized pickerel including the 25 incher in the photos below. |

Got back onto the Charles for the first time since July. The water levels are low but reasonable, the water is still dark and murky but the weeds have died back considerably. Things started out promising around 11 AM with a pick and a small bass on a crankbait and spinner bait respectively. Worked my way upstream alternating between the two baits without success. Spied a patch of lilypads and decided to throw the frog. Small bass on. Okay, so now it's three fish on three different baits. Continued upstream, now throwing three different baits. More of nothing for the next several hours. Around 4:00 decided to turn around and start back. Spied another patch of lilypads. First cast of the frog, bang, fish on, a small bass. So I decide to work the area. Soon another fish on, this time a good one, but it gets off because yours truly is still over-eager on the frog hook set. Next cast, another fish on, and another good one. This time I breathe out, breathe in, and then set the hook. 2lb 12oz, not bad. I worked the area for a while longer and had a bunch of other hits on the frog but no hookups. At least I found the fish and know where to go next time out. |

It was a cloudy, cool day with high temps in the low 60's. The weather kept the other fisherman off the water until afternoon so I was able to enjoy several hours of almost complete solitude. The inevitable Ponki breeze was blowing out of the northwest requiring me to use my anchor. This turned out to be a pain because I had to cover a lot of water to find fish.
The bait of the day turned out to be spinnerbaits in any color, but I also gave my frog and Storm swimbaits a good workout. My first two hookups threw their hooks. I boated my third, a solid 2+ pounder. My fourth was a monster. I got a good hookset that held even when he leapt completely out of the water. I was cranking as hard as I could but he got me down into the weeds and threw the hook 5 feet from the boat. This one felt like a personal best and I was kicking myself the rest of the day for letting it get away. Shorty thereafter I hooked up on the Storm swimbait but he threw the hook at the boat. My sixth, an average sized fish, I was able to boat.
By then I had probably anchored about 20 times and I was thinking about calling it a day. The wind had dropped a bit so I decided to paddle to the middle of the pond and drift back toward the launch point. Number seven came soon, followed almost immediately by number eight, a 4+ pounder that almost made up for the one I lost earlier. Two casts later I had a massive hit that literally pulled the rod from the cold, wet hands. I sat there stunned saying "WTF?" Number nine, an average fish, came soon after.
By Ponki standards it was a strange day to be sure. The pickerel bite was almost dead. I boated three slime darts all day. Usually, they outnumber the bass four or five to one, especially on spinnerbaits. I can't wait to get back out there, I'm liking the fall bite. |

I decided to fish a frog that morning and it was my undoing. The bite was on, I had lots of blowups but my technique is so pathetic that I failed to make a single hookup. Tournament winner Dirty Hooker was fishing a wacky rig green senko across the pads with good success. Then the heavy rain came so I beached the kayak and just stood under the trees for a good 30-45 minutes. After the rain tapered off I returned to my yak and realized that my anchor was missing, the knot had slipped and it was in a couple feet of water back toward the shore. I located and salvaged my anchor and continued to fish the frog deep in the pads. The bite was noticeably slower now and I failed to raise a single fish. Frustrated, I paddled to clearer water and began a drift across the pond throwing a white spinnerbait. I ran into Pistolpete who told me he had 4 fish in the bag, had lost a couple others, and Drew had 5 in the bag. Here I was on my home water with a big fat zero, embarrassing. I continued to drift and finally hooked into my only bass of the day, a solid 2lb. Shortly after that I hooked into a monster pickerel, 24 inches and solid, an absolute beast that pulled the kayak around. I should have weighed him but I was too worked up. In the process of measuring him my brand new bump board went overboard and now sits in 7 feet of water in the middle of Ponki. Ironically, we had planned to have a lunker pickerel category for this tournament but since only six of us competed I didn't want to further dilute the kitty. This is the second tournament in a row where I bagged the biggest fish, just not the right species. |

Met my friend Justin at Stump Pond in Westborough. This was the site of the MAFF kayak tournament two weeks ago at which I was summarily thumped, so I felt the need to revisit the site of my defeat to see if I could prepare myself for the next time. Arrived by 7AM and it was already Grand Central Station, I thought there must be another tournament on. The fog was as thick as peanut butter but I could make out the silhouettes of four or five boats within a 50 yards of the boat ramp. I launched my kayak and paddled around as Justin backed his boat down the ramp. Naturally I was casting and immediately was into a nice 2lb bass right off of the boat ramp using a black jitterbug. Justin went off to his favorite spot and I worked the boat ramp area for a while using a variety of lures but no more strikes. I then met up with Justin on the other side of the island and started fishing the stumps. It took a while but I finally got my second bass, a 1pounder on a white spinner bait. A while later I landed my third bass, a 1.5 pounder on the white spinner bait. Justin took off for home and I paddled toward the boat ramp castin' and crankin'. After a bit I had my fourth bass, a 2.5 pounder, on the same white spinner bait. I let her go, looked up and noticed a familiar looking boat. It was Pirougejoe a/k/a Rick Bradley. We chatted it up a bit and then I headed for land. It's fun to unexpectedly meet up with folks you know on the water. All in all a nice morning. |

This is my personal account from the MAFF kayak tourney. The morning was warm and humid with temps in the mid 70s and no wind. The Sudbury River was low, slow and calm; the water extremely murky. I launched and headed upstream working both banks with a black jitterbug. After a quarter of a mile or so without a single rise I switched over to an orange and bronze crankbait, then senkos in a variety of colors, all the while working my way upstream. After several hours without a hit of any kind I finally snapped on a chartreuse square lip crankbait and started trolling the weed line. After a short time I boated a nice 20" pike, my first ever. I put the crankbait back out and almost immediately hooked a 14" catfish. Things stopped after that and I started alternating between the orange spinner bait and senkos without a hit. Eventually, I had to turn around and start back downstream to get to the tournament weigh-in. On the way back I decided to just keep throwing the chartreuse crankbait working the left shore weed line. Wouldn't you know, I hooked another pike, this time a NICE one. I wrestled with it for a while before finally boating a 36 incher. I made it weigh-in with zero bass but I had the biggest fish of the day :) |

A perfect summer Friday so I left work early and got to Ponki by 3:30. A fairly stiff breeze was blowing out of the northeast and the anchor was in use most of the day. Overall fishing was quite slow. I worked the western end of the pond hard, working the pads and weed mats. I kept switching between senkos, Booyah frog and my "go to" white spinner bait. Eventually I hooked into a 1.5lb bass on the spinner bait. After a few hours I decided to head to the opposite end of the pond. Along the way picked up a 2+lb in the white spinner bait. By the time I reached the easter shore the wind had died down. So I tied on a popper and BAM, first cast, a 3+lb bass. I worked the area for a while longer but the sun was fading fast and I didn't want to load up in the dark. |

High tide was around 1:00 PM so my buddy Tom and I headed out around 11:00 to catch the incoming. We headed in a southeasterly direction paralleling Hough's Neck. I had forgotten the mount for my fishfinder so I was relying on Tom to let me know when he was marking fish. About half a mile out he tells me theres a school under his boat. I throw out a blue popper and start jerking it back to the boat. A swirl, cast again and fish on! After a minute or two I have a nice 20" bluefish in the boat and my new baitcast combo is officially now a decent saltwater rig. I tried to get a picture of it but my phone started acting up so while my phone rebooted I let her loose and cast again. Another swirl. Recast and, BOOM, another fish on. As I was playing her she spit the hook. So no photo of fish #1 or fish #2. After that things died down considerably with just the occasional swirl. but no hookups. We fished the southwest quadrant of the bay pretty hard. Tom eventually landed a 28" striper on a red tube n worm. After about 6 hours on the water I finally hooked into another fish, a small striper. Not the most productive day but it was a beautiful afternoon on the ocean with several moments of excitement. |

Since Tuesday and Thursday were so nice I decided to leave work early to catch the tail end of the day on the water. On Tuesday I spent of my time equally working spinnerbaits, crankbaits and poppers. I did hit two bass on the spinnerbait but lost both when they jumped. I caught a nice 2.5 pounder on the baby bass square lip and several smaller bass and a 21" pick on the popper.
Thursday my goal was to work the kinks out of the new braid I installed on my Abu Silvermax reel. I was also working out a new baitcast combo, Shimano Caenan reel and Berkley Bionix rod. I started hard working the pads with the frog without a single blowup. So I switched to spinnerbaits and then a sinking rattle shad with narry a nip. Exasperated I resorted to senkos and scored three smallish bass. As evening descended I put on a hula popper and missed two blowups. Finally, with the light fading I put on a black jitterbug and scored a fat 22.5" pick. |

Braved the morning rain to catch the high tide with a few friends from New England Kayak Fishing. This was my fourth time out and FINALLY I caught something -- a nice 20+ inch bluefish on a pencil popper. Boy do those things put up a fight, they just do not give up. No other fish despite a number of attacks on my popper but I was thrilled to bust my cherry. One of the other guys managed 2 stripers and 3 bluefish on poppers and white shads. Looking forward to the next trip. |

So much for the threat of rain. With the cancellation of the kayak tourney I decided to go fishing close to home figuring that the skys would eventually open up on me. I hit the water just after 6 and worked my way along the south shore moving west toward the golf course. It was one of those days where I lost as many as I boated. The pickerel bite was on early but the bass were tough to find. I worked the edges of the lillys with various spinner baits and crank baits. I worked the pads with frogs. Had a couple hits on the frog but I think they were all picks and wasn't able to get a good hookset on any of them. I tried a jitterbug and hooked into a nice pick that pulled the tail hook out of the lure. I eventually boated several nice picks including a very nice 21 inch and a 26 inch beast. Tired of picks I switched to a baby bass square bill crankbait that I picked up at Dicks this week. Eventually picked up a nice 2.5 lb bass on that along with a yellow perch and a sunny. Kept working the lillys along the west side working my way north switching between frog, crankbait and spinnerbait. Hit another decent bass and several more picks on the spinnerbait. Finally called it a day around 1:00; the rain never arrived. |

RegularRoy and I met up at Ponki for an after-work fish fest. We made our way out to a favorite spot along the southwest shore. I hit an 18.5" pick in the first few minutes, Roy boated a small bass, then the bite died for a couple of hours. Nothing we tried was working and we tried everything. Stymied, we decided to try the east end of the pond. While trolling a chartreuse/orange spinner bait I hooked a couple more pickerel including another 18 incher and a couple slime darts. Over by the island I was able to nail a bass on the same spinner bait. I then nailed a decent 2lb+ on a BPS pumpkin senko lookalike in the lillys. Final bass was caught on my tried and true white spinner bait as light was fading. Not a super productive day but persistence eventually paid off and the pond was a shimmering sheet of glass. A great night to be on the water :) |

My daughter wanted to go kayak fishing with me so I took her to Ponki. The morning was nice and overcast but soon the wind picked up and whipped the water into white caps. I had to deploy the anchor and lash the boats together to keep from being swept across the pond. Still, she managed to boat a couple of mid-sized picks. I managed a couple of bass and a few picks. Not an ideal day for paddling but certainly a nice day on the water with my kid. |

Made it an early Friday at work and hit the Charles around 4 until 7:30. Boated a bunch of nice bass using a 1/8 oz white spinner bait. It seemed that there were fish everywhere you'd expect them to be, in the slackwater, the deadfall, and amongst the roots. The 1/8 oz spinner bait was the perfect size but the wire gauge was too light and eventually the willow blade fell off the first one and a big fellow broke off my backup. I was able to boat one more bass on a larger spinner bait. By that time I had reached Motley Pond and the water quality deteriorated. The water in the Charles is getting pretty low but it is remarkably clear upstream of Motley. All in all a very productive few hours. |

Took off early from work and headed down to Ponki around 4:00. For the first time this year there was no wind and the water was like glass. With the sun shining I could see right down to the bottom of the pond and I watched many a junior bass swim by. The bite was on early. I used my standard white spinner bait and quickly nailed two 15" LMBs about 20 yards out from the lilly pads on the west side of the launch area. Then things slowed. I made my way along the south shore moving west. Lots of short strikes but no hookups. So I decided to work the opposite shore. I've only caught perch over there but I see guys working it almost every time I come here so I figure there must be something worth catching over there. Alas, as usual, nothing. The sun is starting to set, I figured I had about an hour and a half or so before I would have to pull out, so I decided to finish my day up around the island. I began a slow southeasterly paddle trolling my white spinner bait. A few minutes later I had myself a tiny slime dart. He and my spinner bait went back into the water and a few minutes later BAM, something big. I started to reel her in and I can feel there is a fish on the line but she's not budging. I'm actually reeling my boat over to her. Soon I have a 21" pickerel and a glob of weeds in the boat. Take a few photos and back to fishing. I make my way over to Cormorant Rock (that's my name for it anyway). I've never spent much time fishing over here but after a few casts I was able to boat a 14" bass and 18" pick. By this time it was getting late so I landed my boat and chatted up fishing and hiking with three guys on the shore. As I was pulling the yak back to the car my cart broke. The three guys came walking by and helped me carry the yak to my car. Thanks guys. |

So, after a crappy (not crappie) morning at Canton Res I regrouped and decided to make another foray to the Charles in Dedham. This time I launched at a new location, behind the Dedham Recreation facilites on Route 135 behind the ball field. Almost immediately I was into a nice 3lb bass. Sadly, this was the only fish of the day. But I did enjoy a nice paddle down to Bridge Street and back. And there certainly was LOTS of structure that must have contained fish (if only I were skilled enough to tempt them). |

So I started out at Canton Res around 7 AM. There were already 5 cars there and more arrived as I was unloading. It seems to be a very popular fishing spot. This was my second time fishing here, the first was maybe 8 weeks ago and I caught a bunch of perch, crappie and one seriously large pickerel. I was hoping for more of the same. Sadly it wasn't to be. All I recorded were two overly ambitious perch, one on a spinner bait (really, I don't know how it got the hook into its mouth) and one on a Rapala jointed minnow.
At this point I must express my disappointment with Canton Res. There is a "seediness" to this place. The shore is lined with an odd combination of nice waterfront homes interspersed with ramshackle cottages. There are old tires and shopping carts along the shore line and the water is MURKY. It may contain some nice bass but it's not a very nice place to paddle.
After two hours I left and went to fish the Charles River in Dedham. |

The morning started rainy and cloudy, a thunder storm passed through at 7:30 AM but after a few hours the clouds cleared out and it turned sunny and hot. Ponky is pretty full of weeds at this point so lure selection is pretty much limited to anything that is weedless. I was able to boat a 20.5" pick on a white spinner bait and had a bunch of other short hits. The purple Senko produced two decent bass. Called it quits by 1:00 due to the brutal sun. Also want to give a shout out to Dave and Jimmy in their Pungos. They told me they were into a lot of fish. I saw Jimmy get two in a row so I guess he was telling the truth. |

It was supposed to be a nice day but it remained grey and windy for the several hours I was there. I'm really tiring of this pond. It's small, heavily fished and rarely fails to disappoint. Three hours on the water with one middling pickerel to show for it. By the time I cashed it in the shore was so lined with hopeful trout fisherman that I ran over a line trying to beach my yak. And the park is so overused by dogs that one must tread carefully to avoid the s*** bombs. There, I got it out of my system. | - |

First time on the Charles fishing though I have kayaked it many times. Found a spot near Home Depot in West Roxbury to launch from only 20 feet from the road, so easy in, easy out. Wind was gusting pretty heavy at times and I had a hard time controlling the yak. The Cow Pond stretch is a big open body of water with a slow current, so slow in fact that the wind was actually blowing me upstream all day long. Was throwing soft plastics and crank baits, Had strikes on everything but the Charles, she don't give up her fish too easy. Lost four bass that went airborne. Only one small bass made it to the boat, one decent pick, and a bunch of fat yellow perch. It was enough action to make me try up stream a little further. | - |

My first trip ever to Canton Res and I used it to shake down the new Ascend D10 kayak. Launched at Pleasant Street and rowed out a bit. Attached a brand new rattle shad and BAM, first cast I was into a nice big pick. Turned out to be the largest fish of the day. Over the course of 5 hours I paddled my way around the perimeter of the pond throwing crank baits, soft rubber, top water and getting strikes on all of them, but only 2 smallish bass. Lots and lots of small picks and black crappie, very large black crappie with a few aggressive sunnies thrown in. All in all, lots of fishing action and quite a variety of different locations to test our your techniques.
The only bad thing was that I left behind my brand spankin' new lip gripper with integrated scale that I shelled out $44 for. Used if for one trip. I'm sure some other fisherman is counting himself lucky for finding it. Oh well.... | - |
