10/18/2011 - 10/19/2011

Went out of the night of the 16th, into the morning of the 17th, the day after/of the boating disaster.

Conditions were ideal. Choppy water, incoming tide, birds everywhere. Unfortunately, our bait was not. I was unable to find fresh mackerel so we had to use frozen, bait store garbage.

I got one pull for a second, but was unable to set the hook and that was it. 6 hours spent, countless numbers of crabs fed.

The next day, I was planning on taking a break, but at 8PM, a guy I know who is a commercial fisherman, called me up and told me he had fresh mackerels from that day. He had fish of all sizes. I personally love the small ones because they're easier to bait onto the hook. Yeah, you need more of them, but they last longer. I immediately met up with him and bought $50 worth to cover me for the next few days.

A lot of people freeze these, but it completely ruins them. You ever cut open a mackerel and see that paper pulp type color? That means that it's gone. Nothing will bite that. Here's the trick. Have a cooler and a bunch of bags of ice. Lay down a layer of ice, then put down a row of macks. Lay another layer of ice on top, then put down another row of macks, etc. This will keep them in fresh FRESH condition for 3-4 days, which will then in turn turn up your bite ratio.

These things are SUPER fresh. The color on the fish is green, the stripes look like they've been painted on precisely... You cut them open, the insides are blood red, almost gelatinous.

Anyway. I went out that night and much to my dismay, the water was dead. Completely still. You couldn't even tell that the tide was coming in. No birds, nothing. I was expecting another skunk night, but after a couple hours, I finally took a hit and pulled in a little 24" snapper. No hits for another few hours and then took in a 27". Then, on my final few macks, I decided to not chunk them but put a whole one on a hook. I had it out there for not even 5 minutes when my baitrunner went insane. Before I could set, it stopped. I started reeling to pull in the line and rebait, but there was nothing at the other end... Whatever bit took the whole damn thing.

If any of you are still reading, any idea what this could have been? I've had this happen to me in this same spot 4-5 times this year... On occasion I've had the rod in my hand and it almost feels like a striper thump, but way heavier, and the line always snaps. Keep in mind, I have 80 lb braid on my rods and my knots are always good...

Anyway, the season is almost over, I will be going out tomorrow and using up the rest of these macks.

10/16/2011 - 10/17/2011

I was invited to go on a friend's newly acquired 30 or so footer boat last minute, so I couldn't bring my gear. By the time we got out on the water, it was near 10PM. The tide was rolling in and it was pretty choppy. I was horrified to find rods equipped with 20 lb. mono and these tiny circle hooks that wouldn't be able to hold the mackerel chunks that my friends had bought as bait for more than a couple of minutes.

Oh well. I made it work. We went 20-30 minutes out from Weymouth, a little past the islands. I threw out a mack head rigged through the eyes. After 5 minutes, I damn near lost my rod, I got hit so hard. I fought the fish for ten minutes or so, thankfully it was swimming towards me. Turned out to be a 34+ bluefish. I would have taken a photo but my phone needed to be used for emergency calls and since we were out in the middle of the water, it kept searching for a signal, thus killing the battery. More on that later.

That was the only hit of the night. From here on, it all went downstream. Literally.

We decided to hit another part of the water, and realized we had no idea where we were. It was pitch black and the navigation decided to crap out. The waves started getting really, really huge and at one point came over the side of the boat, flooding the engine.

Huge problem.

We finally got it started again after 30 minutes, just to have it crap out after 5 minutes. Another 40 minutes later, and it starts for a couple minutes tops and then craps out again. Now it won't start at all or even make a noise. The tide is supposed to be slack at this point, but the wind and current are sending us quickly towards an island. We almost hit a bunch of rocks and a pier, barely missing them, and ended up beached on George's Island.

We had to call the Coast Guard who came, but had to go back to base to get a bigger boat because the conditions were too rough for the one they had brought. They couldn't tow the boat because it was too dangerous for them, so they just took us back to base in Hull. It was nearly 6AM at this point. No cabs would take us back to our cars in Weymouth so we had to wait another half hour for someone's brother to pick us up.

All said and done, I walked back into my house at 8:30 AM, with a big bluefish, and red raccoon eyes. Thankfully we didn't die.

Spy Pond, Arlington, MA
So my friend Pete and I started out at Spy Pond with Senkos. We each hooked one, 12 inches, and 15 inches respectively. No more takes after a while, so we decided to switch it up.

I tied on a Zara Spook, full size. I cast it out once and start walking the dog. He's tying on a KVD 1.5 in bluegill color. The second cast out, I really whip it, and Pete, unfortunately, was kneeling right behind me.

*Snap!
"AGHHHH!!!"

I look behind me. My line is snapped and the Zara Spook is dangling from his face. I'm horrified, but I mask it. Two of the hooks on the rear treble are deeply embedded into his ear. The middle treble is dangling very close to his eye. I told him to stay kneeling and pulled. The barbs were deep, it would not budge and it became apparent that if I pulled anymore, his whole ear might come off. I used my knife to unscrew the two screws holding the treble that was embedded in his cartilage. Right before it came off, I told him to smile and took a snapshot. He was being a real champ.

Got the lure off, and rushed him to the ER. The shock wore off and he started feeling a ton of pain. The doctor finally came to see him and used a sterilized nail cutter and pliers to cut the exposed hooks, then push the barbs entirely through his ear.

I went to JFK Library to try to try my luck at blues. They were definitely biting, but I lost my line twice to a couple of absolutely massive hits (mind you, I have 80 lb braid). A guy was using his last piece of bait on his dinky little 20 lb test rod and hooked up with a massive fish. The fish took the bait so hard that it left the line on his reel looking like steel wool. I ran over to help him. He held the rod while I untangled all of it which took about ten full minutes. The fish remained on miraculously and we pulled it in after I got all the tangles and knots out. 36 inches.

All in all, a horrendous day, but hopefully my fish karma is straight...

Had a great night the other night. Fished the incoming high for three hours, and the outgoing for another two.

Used very fresh chunks of mackerel. By fresh, I mean, it looked like jello inside of these pieces. None of those flaky, white chunks. Check the Vietnamese fish markets in Dorchester. Many of them have fish that were caught that day. Plenty of fellas were using the old frozen, 2 bucks a pop, chunks from baitshops and only one of them caught. Freshness definitely made a difference.

No other stripers that night. Lost my line, hook, and weight twice from giant hooks.

Steel leaders are an absolute must. Most everything being caught around here are blues, all above 30 inches. Setting the hook as quickly as possible and keeping tension on the line is also important as those suckers spin back and will chop your line in half if you give them the opportunity to.

The striper was caught on the right side (if looking out onto the water) not far from shore. The blues were caught from the left, middle, and right.

The water was moving great. Sometimes I'll catch at this spot when the water is still, but when it's really rocking all over the place and you've got really fresh bait, you're bound to hit eventually. Just make sure you aren't goofing off so you can set the hook! Seen plenty of guys miss fish because they are busy chatting, dawdling about somewhere!

Sorry I haven't been on in a bit. Haven't been fishing much, but have been catching here and there. The freshwater bite has slowed down a bit so I switched over to saltwater gears...

Caught a few blues last night, phone died so I couldn't take pics of all of them. Fished from 10PM until around 4AM this morning. Lost an enormous bluefish (I think! Maybe it was a shark!) that ripped my steel leader to bits!

Was using very, very fresh mackerel that was acquired for me by a friend. The other guys using baitshop bought frozen macks didn't get bit by anything but rock crabs!

Floating Bridge Pond, Lynn, MA
8/31/2011

And I spotted a little pond with a bridge that ran right through it! Later on, after coming to this website, I realized that it's called Floating Bridge Pond.

I didn't expect much action here, but I had two friends with me, and our plans in the area had gotten cancelled, so we busted out my rods and went to town. They are pretty new, so they were complaining after 20 minutes of no bite.

But then, one of them hit on a jitterbug, and then another hit on a KVD 1.5.

Nothing huge, but the bite was on...

I was using senkos and ended the day with 6 bass, 3 which were well above average size. One friend caught two pickerels, a couple little bass, and then one giant pick was brought up to shore and thrashed last minute, ripping the KVD lure off the line and headed to the middle of the pond where we could see him thrashing about. The other friend just hit one small bass on a jitterbug.

Not too shabby for a random pond chosen last minute... A great little spot to teach impatient friends how to fish.

Would have been a great day to teach some newbs how to fish. The little ones were biting everything I threw. Didn't manage to set on all of them, but still, very aggressive. Caught nine fish, but nothing over 12"... Most were around 10".

I guess it's better than catching nothing... I could see bigger fish chasing baitfish but they were just out of casting range.

Threw a lot of different baits today. Spinners of all types, big and small, senkos in all different colors, swimbaits, KVD 1.5. Caught everything on the senkos with the exception of two that I caught on the KVD.

A lot of people have been hitting this place lately, there must have been 4-5 boats out on the water, and the shoreline was pretty packed full of people fishing with worms and shiners. Maybe the bite is slow because of the pressure?

Oh well. Hopefully a bigger fish next time.

Dedham, MA kind of a honeyhole?
8/27/2011

So, the friends wanted to call it a day... I was pretty 'whatever' about it. We parted ways, and I headed from Norton back to Boston. It was raining pretty hard, but when I was on 95 around Norwood, it stopped.

I pulled off in Dedham and began to look around and hit the first body of water I found. Saw another guy fishing there too, so it seemed hopeful.

I had one rod rigged with a red senko, and another with a cheap plastic salamander. Hit the water with the senko for a bit, nothing. Dropped that rod and hit the water with the salamander. Fourth or fifth retrieve, I took a huge hit. Pulled it in and it was a 19-20" in. Larry.

Finally! Nearly 11 hours of fishing and a nice bass. The other fella was nice enough to take a shot of me with my fish. We then cooked it up on the spot and took turns feeding one another. Just kidding about that last part. At this point, it started to pour again, thunder, lightning, all that good stuff, so I packed up and called it a day.

8/27/2011

Went out with a few friends today from 6AM - 4PM.

They were using shiners. They caught a bunch of 12"-14" bass.

I was using red senkos, black senkos, a swimbait, and a cheap salamander softbait that I picked up.

The day started off very frustrating for me. I kept getting hits and the fish kept spitting the bait out before I could set. A few times, I set, and the fish managed to snap my line. I finally hooked a tiny bass that was about 6 inches long. I refuse to use live bait, unless it's really early on in the season because it's just boring for me, but I have to admit, it was frustrating to see my buddies pulling them in with such ease, as little as they were... It seemed just about every time they got hit, they would just reel in without even setting, and have one. Oh, one of them also caught a white sucker on a shiner, which was odd. I have never seen one in person before. It was about 14 inches.

Went another few hours before I got another bite. This time, yet again, it snapped my line. My friend threw a shiner into the spot where we saw the flash of silver scales when I set my hook, and a second later, he had a 15" bass. We looked inside, and sure enough, my hook and line were in there, the swimbait was nowhere to be found. GREAT!

At around 4, we parted ways because my friends are not real fishermen (haha!). See next trip.

Various Locations Within City Limits, Boston, MA
8/25/2011

Went to three different spots and catching nothing bigger than 11 inches. Spy Pond in Arlington, Crystal Lake in Newton, and Brookline Reservoir.

Caught one small largemouth at each location. Took pics of the first two, decided not to take one of the last one because I was fed up.

5 hours. All caught on a 5" black senko.

Really frustrated right now. Missed a lot of little strikes. I guess it could have been worse, catching little fish is better than catching no fish, but still...a

Saw a couple of guys at the Brookline Reservoir catching some decent sized catfish. The wind was real strong at that point though and it was pretty hard to cast after a while, so I called it a day, or night rather.

Oh well. Try again tomorrow. Or maybe I'll gear up and head down to Brighton tonight. Haha!

**Please look at the photo. Can you tell me what those black marks near the tail are??

Was very windy when I got there. No good for presenting any sort of topwater, let alone getting it out there in the first place. Used a black senko for a while. Couple of short strikes, but nothing solid.

Switched over to my 3/8, black, jointed Jitterbug. Cast along the shoreline. There is a small downed tree there. (If you look closely, it has, or had about 5 jitterbugs stuck in it. I now tie on a 30 lb. leader to my braid. I've managed to tear some branches off and save my lure a few times with that. If you're curious, if you add about a foot and a half, it really allows for the lure to wiggle better for some reason.) I threw about 20 feet past that tree, on a line with it, which is app. 6-7 feet from the shore. Right as the lure neared the tree, I got hit by a cow; big splash, weight on the line, the whole deal. It took a little bit to get it in because she was fighting pretty hard. I didn't have a scale or anything to measure it, so I put it up against my 22 in. rim to snap a photo. Threw her back in and continued.

I caught a few tiny smallies, between 7-11 in. Nothing to write home about. Packed up and went home.

Spy Pond, Arlington, MA
8/23/2011

Took my friend Jon out to Spy Pond this evening. In my 12 years of knowing him, I've taken him fishing plenty of times. He's gotten hit, but has never managed to get a bass.

Most times, I think that shiners and live bait for freshwater fishing is for young kids and old people, but I wanted to get him hooked on fishing, so we hit up Arlington Bait & Tackle and got a couple dozen.

We started off on a private section, sort of in someone's yard but she didn't seem to mind. There were a couple of strikes there. I caught on a Pumpkinseed colored Gary Yamamoto senko. He was about 18 inches or so. This guy had a saltwater line with a swivel stuck in his throat! Must have snapped the line on someone! I tried to pull it out, but was unable to loosen it, so I cut the line as far down as I could and removed the swivel. Hope that hook rusts out and that fish is ok, he was a big one for inside city limits! Dropped another little guy. The shiners, unbelievable didn't get hit at all in this area, so we moved to the other side of the pond behind the Boys and Girl's Club.

We went to a little dock and could see big bass breaking just beyond our cast zone. I went to cast my friend's line and the shiner dropped into the water for a second. Out of nowhere, a little 10 inch Larry popped out of nowhere and snagged it. Boo. What a pain.

We cast out by some new weeds that seemed to have developed in the area, and after losing three or so shiners because, like every n00b, my friend tried to set the hook real excitedly without tightening the slack, he finally nailed one that was about 13 inches. He hooked up with his second one about five minutes later, after going through a few more shiners. I hit a few on my senko, but nothing bigger than 14 inches or so.

Overall, a relaxing day. I wish I still had a boat. There were some big fish chasing minnows to the top just beyond our zone... We got hit a lot today too; definitely felt a bit like the autumn bite...

8/23/2011

Caught 8 largemouth ranging from 11in to 18 in. Was using Texas rigged Yamasenko in black, and black jointed jitterbug (3/8).

When I got there, it was very windy...

Caught a little guy around 1AM. Had a bunch of small and big bites but was having a hard time setting the hook, partially due to the fact that it was pitch black and I had no idea how much slack was out. Then I hit an 18 incher just 7 or so feet off from the shore (or so it seemed). It was a very light bite that I could hardly feel... Not the typical tugtugtug, but more of a lure snagging lightly on a branch at the bottom type of feel... I set anyway, and for the first few seconds, thought I had a big branch as the fish wasn't really fighting. Then he broke the surface, and I knew I had a decent sized one.

Around 2AM, the wind stopped and within minutes, it was super calm out. I could see big splashes from where the fish were chasing something up to the top. I cut my senko off, tied on my jitterbug and went to town. It was so dark and the clouds were covering the moon, so there were a lot of short strikes. Unlike other nights, these fish would hit once and once they felt the hardness of the bait, or the hooks, they stopped hitting it. I kept walking around the reservoir, hitting calm spots off the shore.

Finally, a street lamp turned on and I could see a little. I think the fish could see a little better too because I caught 6 ranging from 13 in. to 17 in.; hit after hit after hit after hit. This went on until about 4AM when I decided to call it quits after about a half hour of silence.

Definitely felt like a fall bite this evening... And now I need to hit the hay.

Around 1AM, went out for a little bit on a windy night. Got skunked at a couple of ponds as it was hard to cast with the heavy winds. So, I came to this spot as in the past during windy conditions, I've managed to pull some from here. A couple little largemouths, and a 17" smallie. Great fight. Caught on black, jointed jitterbug, fishing against the open current on a miscast. It hit once and missed. I stopped for a couple of seconds. Then I started up again and it hit twice as hard and I nailed it. Fought so hard that when I got it up onto the bank, I had it caught by the mouth and by a piece of its tail!

Rained pretty hard for a little while today. Stopped by around 8PM, went out around 10:30PM.

Caught 13", 17" larries and a large sunfish that hooked itself awkwardly. Friend caught a really overzealous 6" bass.

I was throwing black Yamamoto Yamosenkos hooked wacky as well as my thirteenth 3/8 black jointed jitterbug, which I lost in a downed tree tonight.

So, the girlfriend's parents invited us up to Maine. They had a lakefront house. Pumped, I brought my gear up with me. A few weeks before, after a long night of drinking, I was up watching infomercials. A banjo minnow commercial came on and I impulsively ordered a couple kits.

Nothing was working up there, so I threw one on and ended up losing damn near all of them that day because the fish kept tearing 'em up! All but one of these was caught on a 5" banjo minnow from the shore! If any of you guys have these, I was not fishing the way the DVD that came with it told me to. I was flicking my wrist rapidly and kept the slack tight the entire time.

As soon as I would see the bait disappear, I would give it a second, then set.

What I thought was a drunken mistake turned out to be a pleasant surprise!
