Caught a bit of the Sox game. Left it tied, which was heartbreaking, but fishing comes first.

I predicted bite time to be around 11:30-11:45, but just in case, I showed up to my spot at 10:30.

I was a little disheartened to find that the wind was no longer coming from the southwest, but now southeast. Tossing up current meant throwing directly into it which kind of stunk, but eventually it settled down and I was able to get my plug to the spot I wanted it.

I could hear bass busting way out of casting range, but I continued to cast to this spot hoping I could catch them leaving... I threw a yellow bomber for a while, then a large darter, even a popper for a few, before switching to a schoolbus pattern "magnum long a" bomber. At 11:45, my tenth or so cast, I finally felt a bump. I paused, twitched, felt another bump. I paused again and slowed it down even more than I had been reeling to begin with. Just when I got the feeling it wouldn't hit it, the fish did and ran with it.

Ended up with a nice, healthy 32" striper. The only one of the night.

Apparently, we still can't add photos, so check my photos for a shot kd the catch.

Went again last for a few hours...

Buddy and I caught one a piece, a 36 and 29 respectively, practically at the same time. We lost a few others, and there was a lot of tail slapping going on for about a half hour. Then the bite went dead.

Had my friend pose with both the fish since we only had one wanted to photodocument and release as quickly as possible.

Spent the rest of the night trying to free my favorite bomber lure from a keeper size dock I managed to hook. Thankfully, I was able to do so.

The site won't let me add photos so check my photos if you'd like to see the fish we caught this night.

Hit the open beach during the afternoon. Was bugged by a southwest wind that was definitely not blowing in my favor. No sign of bait, a seemingly low high tide... All signs pointed to a retreat toward the backwaters.

The tide was still coming up a little. I made a few casts with the SP and caught a schoolie.

I decided to head home and wait til dark. Typically, I've had success here with the tide ripping back out...

I came back a few hours later with a pal and threw a yellow bomber 17a. Second cast, near structure; boom. Had a nice 32". While I'm reeling in, my buddy hit a 28"er. At this point we paused and my friend took a photo of me holding both fish. We released them and continued to fish. No bites for a while so I switched over to the trusty Yozuri magdarter. Boom. A 28". My buddy's turn came next and he hit a fish around 30". Then, for the rest of the night, we hit schoolie after schoolie til we got tired and decided to pack it in.

Lots of schoolies and some cookie cutter bass. It was 45 degrees out, but the wind made it feel 30. It was very cold and the way my legs felt in my waders reminded me that there is probably only a week or so left before this season comes to an end!

Definitely going back out tomorrow night. Still trying for that absolute monster from shore on plugs... **phone won't let me add pics so I will just add them to my profile.

Went to my meeting after Leverett. Had another block of free time so decided to hit up Jamaica Pond.

Switched over to trout gears and stuck some powerbait nugs on...

Got one each in a couple minutes...

Had a guy postpone a meeting and said he was running an hour behind. Met a friend to hit Leverett for some bass. Have done well there at night for them on top water...

Not a single hit, but there were carp breaking everywhere. I had all my salt rigs with me, so took one with a baitrunner and rigged it up with carp. My friend grabbed some canned corn and we threw our lines out and managed to pull a good amount... Biggest was 28 or so but fell off the hook when he was thrashing on the shore.

Definitely not my favorite fish to go for, but it definitely killed an hour.

Ran into a bunch of West Coast type waves. Found a little jetty to stand on. Huge mistake. Almost cost me my life a few times... Despite the incredible waves, white water everywhere, there was not a fish to be had. So, after the tide rolled out, I went hunting in an inlet where I found a bunch of smaller fish schooled up. Took them all night on a little yellow bomber.

Got out to my spot as the tide started rolling out... Threw the sp (with new split rings and hooks!), nothing. Threw a bunch of bucktails, also nothing. It was bright and sunny, the only thing I had working in my favor was the wind and how it was making the waves kick.

I decided to break in my Gibb's Danny. It is the deep diving one and I found that it went a little too deep for my liking so I bent the wire down a bit to make it run shallower. First cast, and boom. I hit a really fat 38"er... It's not the fish I lost yesterday, but it'll do.

My bone colored Sp minnow got destroyed and I was amped to find a new one in the mail today. I threw on my gear and went to break this puppy in.

Wind was perfect, waves were ripping, and the fish were biting intermittently in the afternoon. Landed a few schoolies in a matter of minutes and then the bite went dead.

I moved down the beach and found a nice rip. Threw for an hour and got a massive strike. This fish fought for a solid 15-20 minutes. As I tried to get my feet on ground because the sand and rocks were tripping me up, I could see her. Soon, I had her within my pole's reach and she made one final dash in 6 inches of water, breaking free. I pulled up my lure to find the hooks bent all the way open. She was at least 50", maybe more and my heart broke.

Let this be a lesson to anyone fishing the sp minnows... Change those split rings and hooks before you throw. Now instead of holding a giant bass, I just have some schoolies to show you. :(

They're starting to trickle in...

Have been going the past two days at just before dusk and have yet to get skunked.

Most caught on Daiwa SP, couple caught on poppers and one on a metal lipped swimmer.

Mostly, they have been smaller schoolies at outgoing, but I did hit a decent 35"er today.

But caught a couple schoolies around the same time as the day before. Nothing on the Daiwa SP today, but they were hitting the smack-it popper all night. Ended up with two fish in the lower twenties, another one got off about 10 ft from shore, and had a number of short strikes...

Saw some fellas soaking bait but they didn't hit anything. Bite slowed down as soon as it got dark...

Saw an interesting rip in Winthrop at dead low tide yesterday. Parked and ran down to the water with a pole and two plugs; the trusty Daiwa Sp and the Stillwater smackit.

The end result? 3 keeper size fish, biggest being about 36, 37, and a couple schoolies. Would have liked to have kept going but had an appointment to make.

All caught in a narrow stream about 6 feet wide and two feet deep!

Plugged with a Daiwa sp minnow and chunked a fresh squid on another rod. Caught a 23" schoolie on the lure. Then, an hour later, took a giant hit on the chunk. Missed it. But, as I was reeling in, I felt something weird halfway during the retrieve. There was a bunker wrapped up in the braid! Can't say that's ever happened before!

Had a bunch of worms left sitting in my fridge. They looked spent. Pressure seemed to be dropping and there was some wind so decided to dip them at Black Falcon.

Not ten minutes went by before my baitrunner went off. Reeled this guy in, girlfriend helped with the net. Only fish caught on the pier that night. Lucky, I think, all things considered.

Same spot. Same bait; floating worms on a 5 foot leader attached to a styrofoam bobber and glowstick.

Caught the outgoing with a pal today. I have a chef friend who owns a couple fantastic restaurants in the Back Bay/South End (Toro and Coppa. If you ever go, check out the bone marrow anything at both places, an d Toro's corn, and cauliflower dish. You won't believe your tastebuds). He asked me to get him a few stripers for a big meal and I set out to do so. Apparently he uses every part of the fish and I'm excited to see what he can do with the innards.

Anyway, caught a small schoolie off the bat, 30 minutes in. Then no bites for an hour. It was super frustrating to hear the herring popping everywhere, knowing full well that there were big fish chasing them up. My buddy's baitrunner went off, and he pulled one in that was about 28.5. He had to work early and split an hour later.

pulled in a few more schoolies, all in the low twenties and a couple being just shy. Finally hit a 29 and a 28 within 5 minutes.

overall a great night. Surprisingly good bite for water that didn't appear to be moving much.

Also, a cop boat ran over one of my rigs and spooled the entire reel before I could cut it, it was going so fast... That was kind of a bummer. Thank God for the baitrunner.

Shallow, really.

Caught an hour of the incoming and stayed around til it got slack at a spot near Eagle Hill. Caught 3 schoolies plugging with the Daiwa SP minnow in blue mackerel, and another couple on worms. The water in this spot has always been pretty murky, but I noticed that it was especially grody looking this year...

Left and hit up a spot that I will have to keep to myself as it's been getting a lot of attention as of late and it's been tough to fish with all the guys trying, but managed 3 more schoolies floating worms and then hit a 29, 33, and 39 within a half hour close to dead low. Got thoee hits when I extended my leader to 5 ft from 3. Kept the 29 as I guthooked it and it was bleeding out. Released the others. The 39" weighed close to 33 lbs and was quite healthy, very fat, and had clearly been eating well.

VERY surprised at the number of schoolies my friends and I have been getting this year. Seems like we seldom caught them the last few years and now there are tonnnnsss.

In mid April, every year, I will go out and drop a couple chunks to see if the stripers have gotten here yet. Though not as early as last year, or the year before, I got my first couple, one on a squid leftover from last year and the other on seaworms in early May.

Chunks were left at the bottom. Had to rebait every 10 minutes or so because skates (caught 3) and crabs were taking all tje bait super quickly. Annoying, but kept me busy.

Nut Island Schoolies and one nice keeper!

Schoolies between a whopping 12" and 26"! Keeper was in the high 30's though and was a great fight. Fished the last hour of the incoming all the way til it went all the way out. Best bite happened an hour or so on the incoming, and an hour into the outgoing. This was all by the jetty. As far as I could see, nobody on the pier got anything. One guy who was where I was ended up with a 40+ keeper though on a chunk ofbaitshop mack!

These were all caught on the daiwa sp minnow with the exception of one schoolie, the one that was probably the smallest striped bass I have ever caught (does that count as a personal best?) at a foot tops! That one was on a seaworm.

Caught the outgoing tide with a pal. I was plugging and he was using my chunk rod with worms.

We were by the small jetty that you can only see at low. Hurled the worm into a line of current and waited. Almost at dead low, the baitrunner goes nuts and my pal sets the hook.

Nothing on plugs that day, unfortunately.

Had an hour or so to kill one afternoon. Hit a couple rips I saw at low tide and they were holding! 4 fish between 20-26"

All caught on a green mackerel colored Daiwa SP minnow, except for one that bailed a yellow Stillwater Smack It popper. SP minnow is definitely a must have for pluggers! The action is incredible for an 11 dollar lure!

I caught my first striper of the season on May 2 this year. Since then, the bite just never seemed to stop.

There seems to be an influx of squid all over the Boston Harbor this year. They're gone from where I was catching them (Nut Island, in Quincy), but I have literally bought bait twice this year... I have had literally thousands of squid go in my freezer and into my bait bucket. While many fishermen were using that store bought Sea Wave stuff, I noticed that they weren't catching much, if at all. I would try to bring 50-60 down to my regular fishing spots so I could give some to my fellow anglers.

The bite was pretty hot up until last week. Out of every 2-3 outings, I'd say I'd usually hook up with at least one keeper and several schoolies. Now, I still see baitfish popping and fish chasing them, but they seem to not be biting my squids as much. I caught a keeper two days ago, but it had been a good week of going every night tide (4 hours before high, 2 after, and occasionally South Boston from dead low, coming on up). Lots of little schoolies, 14-19 inches around... I can't even count how many of those I've caught.

As usual, around the harbor spots, lots of skates. JFK/UMASS has, as usual, been particularly bad this year. Not so many rock crabs as there were last year, but tons of those little red ones. And if it's not one of those, it's the skates. The current has been real strong in that spot lately, so fighting a skate can often feel like pulling a car out of the water.

I'm uploading a ton of pictures that I can't put in this, so please feel free to take a look and send me some messages. Haven't really been going freshwater too much, though I can confidently say that nighttime topwater is hot again.

Any advice on where to hook up with that 48"+ beast would be greatly appreciated! Tight lines.

Squids have been biting by Nut Island in Quincy. Caught hundreds upon hundreds for bait. Also caught two 36" keepers there a few weeks back. Heard a dude caught a 45" hog there, a couple weeks before I hit my two.

JFK/UMASS has been hot with schoolie and keeper action, biggest one being about 40", and fat! The key really is fresh, fresh, FRESH bait. Anybody using frozen bait store garbage is not likely to hook up, though I did run out one night and caught one on frozen squid from a baitshop that runs 24 hrs/day. Shoot me a message if you want to know where the shop is.

Black Falcon Pier has also been pretty good to me. Have caught a bunch of schoolies and keepers there as well. It seems to be best at low tide, when the tide starts coming up...

Have also managed to catch a bunch of black sea bass... Haven't seen those in a while...

Tight lines everyone!

February Winter Larry (and baby pick)

The weather was wild that day. The wind would be very high, the sky would be overcast. Then all of a sudden, it would be sunny and warm. Then it would start snowing and be back to overcast and windy. Then back to sunny. Then back to overcast, snowy. Then back to sunny again!

It was a bizarre day, for sure.

Using shiners on one pole, and 6" swimbait on the other, I hit the shallows, and then out toward the middle. Most hits came from out in the middle.

Got a lot of very light strikes, almost as if the fish were just coming up to the lure when they were just sitting there, and sucking them up.

Have not caught off the shore in the winter in a very long time, so a good day for me.
