Hot, muggy & buggy. Not our best outing but certainly not our worst!

A great day dodging thunderstorms and exploring unused train tracks.
Very glad I always carry a fishing rod and tackle and had the good sense to pick up some bait.

A quick and early trip to a suggested spot from a local resident. Usually when locals tell me about fishing spots, all I catch is the "Rare New Hampshire Bottomfish"; I was very pleased to be proved wrong on this one.

5/12/2012

Caught my first Brown Trout of the season by the old Rt.101 Souhegan overpass, a hefty 10.5".
We finally ended up further 101 down by the dam early in the afternoon, where I have never caught a damn thing, no pun intended.
All the locals I have talked to have said that spot was "the place to be", this time around, it definitely was! Mike and I each caught 3 Brook Trout.

The Full "Super" Moon made for some pretty decent fishing and it was nice to break a two week record of getting skunked.

Quick late afternoon trip to Beaver Brook. The water was pretty low but high enough to fish.
Caught a bunch of Fallfish and one decent Rainbow.

It's early enough in the season that vegetation isn't an issue fishing from shore.
We are lucky enough to have private shoreline access for a pretty decent afternoon.

We all caught a bunch of Bluegill, but I don't usually record those.

Spontaneous afternoon trip, 2:15pm -5:00pm.

The water was a little low but there was plenty of good fishing. All were caught on a trout worm and had little or no interest in Powerbait.

We each caught one small Brook Trout shortly after sunrise, the rest of the day consisted of getting our hooks cleaned by stealthy little fish.

Nissitissit River Wandering

Nissitissit River - Brookline
3/22/2012

We parked alongside the ballpark on Oak Hill Rd and initially wanted to fish downstream of the bridge at the end of Bohanon Bridge Rd (I would assume that would be the Bohanon Bridge...heh, anyways), but we quickly discovered that the land downstream of the bridge was posted no trespassing per order of the Brookline Fire Department, which is understandable after seeing how easy it would be to fill a tank engine there, or to unload a stocking truck...
So, we decided to take the not posted footpath off to the left, upstream.
Sadly, we didn't have any luck in this section of the river, but, it was early and we decided to press on upstream, only to find a boggy impasse with multiple runoffs that neither of us wanted to tromp through, and the river hooked off to the right.
Back to the footpath we go...
A couple thousand feet down the path we came across one of the larger runoffs and the remains of a bridge abutment; this now footpath was probably a decent thoroughfare 100+ years ago, judging by the hitching posts and stone masonry, but today, there was no way to cross it without wading.
While we were scratching our heads trying to figure out our next move, Mike noticed a possible rise in the runoff and we both saw fish moving around in the murk. We got our lines in and I was pleased when I hooked something that wasn't a sunken log.
What I was expecting, a Fallfish or a White Sucker.
What I was hoping for, a trout of any kind.
What I caught... a Chain Pickerel.

I do have to say the Nissitissit is a picture perfect trout habitat and I certainly plan on making it one of my local haunts. I will have to try it out with a canoe or kayak at some point and I would also love to hear some of my fellow trout anglers weigh in on better spots to fish the shoreline.

Lastly but not leastly, Mike and I both picked up a couple of Deer Ticks while we were out there, just a friendly heads-up :)

Mine Falls Bridge / Whipple St Entrance - Nashua, NH
It's (part) of the Nashua River and usually nothing to write home about, however, some of the lazy waterways that loop around Mine Falls do have some monstrous Largemouth Bass, that is if you can get around the thousands of Bluegill and Yellow Perch.
If you do see a big ol' Larry in here, there is a good reason it got as big as it did.

Another warm water pond that would be much better with a canoe or small boat.
There is apparently shoreline access from Merrifield Park on Rt.111 though I have never explored it.

I can't stress enough how much easier this pond would be to fish from a canoe or small boat. The shoreline brambles and overgrowth form a near-solid wall around the pond.
We found one ramshackle, man-made flotilla that bridged out from the shoreline to fish from.

**You can park on Rt.111A and walk in from the old and still partially paved entrance to the closed section of Ridge Rd, or you can park and walk in from where the closed section of Ridge Rd meets the still used Ridge Rd.

A warm water pond that feels like your fishing in someones back yard, which, you kind of are... I think?
They are even so nice as to put out trash cans and benches, so be respectful and don't fall off the little dam wall on the north side of the pond.

Bowers Pond - Nashua, NH

If you are looking for quick local action and don't really care what takes your bait or are teaching a young angler the basics, Bowers Pond is a pretty decent spot.
This pond has yeilded Largemouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Yellow Perch and a variety of Bluegill and I am sure there are a few Hornpout lurking around the bottom.

**There is a lot of top water and underwater vegetation from late spring through summer.

**The shoreline on the north side of the pond (if you are on Tinker Rd. facing Thornton Rd. it would be the right hand side) is owned by Pennichuck Water Works, they will have local police hand out trespassing citations. Fishing from the causeway bridge is apparently OK, just stay off the north shorelines. Anywhere on the left hand side of Tinker Rd. is safe to fish.

Hunkins Pond - Sanbornton, NH

It was a little late in the day, but we figured we'd hit Hunkins Pond on our way back to camp.
I am reasonably sure Hornpout were the culprit for the loss of bait; I managed to finally hook one moderate sized Brown Trout, but as soon as it hit my hand, it spit the hook, hit the grass and wriggled back into the drink.

Yet another section of the Souhegan River, by an old Rt.101 overpass onto Intervale Rd.
Decent parking, well off to the side of Rt.101.

Most of the tips I have gotten say that the areas between and just above/below the two overpasses is one of those "catch your limit in a hour or less" kind of spots.
I have only had luck much further upstream, though I have seen a slew of fish come out of the previously mentioned spot... just not on my lines.

It was fairly hard to find decent river spots to fish with the water so low; I'm glad Mike knew about this section of the Souhegan and we were lucky enough to land 2 decent trout, which made a somewhat frustrating day totally worth it.

This place should be on the cover of a Field & Stream issue. Arriving in the pre-dawn hour to secure our spot on the shoreline, there were countless rises through the fog and mist. The atmosphere and the fishing made the finger-numbing cold completely tolerable.
Amazing trout fishing!
