lost lake
10/26/2013

Left the house about 11 ish on a new lake adventure. The season i winding down on a lot of lakes here and i wanted to check this place out as it appears to be open all year. I tossed the yak and the boy in the van and headed out. Kind of a long drive for me at 1 hour 30 min so i had high hopes that it would work out well. Passed mason and isabella lake on the way. Pulled up to the ramp at 1230 and slid the boat into the water. There was a man and his two kids at the bank fishing for trout and they were having some decent luck, with three keepers in a few hours. His kids and my boy played as i was setting up and then we started fishing. I went right after leaving the ramp and headed around the lake counter clock wise. This put me in the deep end first and i was not doing so well but the scenery was very nice. I had no idea what the water temp was till half my day was done and i found out it was 54. I was trying to jerkbait and that was getting me zip so i shifted to crank bait in hopes that i might pull up something. Well never pictured trout on a strike king 3xd but they seemed to like it just fine. From about mid lake to the corner of the deep side i cranked up 4 decent rainbows and then back to nothing. i used the same crank for the rest of the lake and pulled one tiny 6 inch bow. I was basicaly done and i planned to trawl back to the launch. I switched out to a Little john MD in Chartreuse Black Back and started taking them down. One after another. I hooked a realy nice one, might have been the largest of the day, and handed the rod to my 5 year old. I told him to crank as fast as he could but he dawdled and the fish got off. Got 6 more after that and i called it a day. Not much for doing laps in the middle of the lake, but it was working very well. Gave 2 fish to the guy on the dock, ended up eye hooking them threw the mouth and could not throw those back.

First yak trip to long lake

Long lake
10/12/2013

Ment to get up early but did not. Left the house loaded with the yak at noon and hit the water about one. Went strait across the lake from the mid lake dock and south. Threw a 3/8ths KVD bluegill spinnerbait all day. I would have tried something else but the lake is so shallow i was cleaning my spinnerbait about every cast and i did not want to deal with a crank or jig getting covered in slime or garbage. The lake is an off green color contrary to the clear water in all the other lakes. I headed south, and got no bites. The shore is very shallow for a long way out and the growth is very heavy. I ran into another boat and they were also first timers on the lake. Both were throwing buzz baits and by the time i caught back up with them, they were still empty handed. Got my personal best for WA state today, but the overall take on the lake was not so great. I think i will be trying other waters before i come back here again.

Loaded up at 10 and headed off to the lake. The plan was to try some clear water baits. I have been doing some reading and i was ready to step up my catching efforts. Round one was going to be the tube, and the keitech 4" swim-baits that worked so well the last time. Well the tube did alright and the baby swim-bait got nothing including a nibble. The conditions were very different from the last trip being a cold bluebird day, and the last was overcast and wet. I got three dink bass the largest a 3/4 my largest to date from that lake and the second biggest in WA so far. The larger two were taken on the tube. Running some BPS tender tubes in green pumpkin with purple flake. I also was surprised with a 14" rainbow trout on the same tube. I would have never guessed it in a million years. I grabbed another trout on the drop shot, my first on this technique. I think it may be the way forward. I ended the day running the drop-shot, and i picked up two fish one trout and a bass quickly and then it died out. I had only one worm to try so i will grab another to swap out for the next trip.

I waited all day saturday for the rain to stop, and it kept up so sunday i figured i would bite the bullet and get wet. And wet i was. I hit the water about 10am and was off the water by about 1300. I caught only one 11" LMB and took a bunch of hits from rainbow trout. I was using a 4" keitech easy shiner and they were loving it. At first i had no idea what was hitting the baby swim bait, but i watched a few at the yak and i knew after that. They were some nice size rainbows and if i had been running a jig head vise a swim-bait hook to stay weedless i might have got half a dozen.

The launch went a lot better than i had expected, even though it was very shallow. The place i wanted to check out the most was the island and it was not productive for me at all. I was using my go to crankbait and a hula grub and the crank got nothing not even a hit. All fish today were caught on a watermelon with gold flake GYB hula grub. I also was using 6lb line, trying to find out if that's what it was going to take? The answer so far is yes. This will be a lot different than the braid i have used over the last two years. I broke my funk and picked up a solid three pounder, and no ounces. He wrapped me up good in the pads and i was shocked that i got it in the boat. I did not try and pull the fish out, i just kept tension until it was close and reached down and lipped it out of the water and cut my line. Shot a pick and sent it on its marry way.

Kitsap lake
9/15/2013

Launched just after noon time. Took my son on our first trip after we received our yak from the movers on thursday. I might have gone sooner but my parents were in town. I had a new plan to try some light line and a weightless plastics. I just got a new lamiglas excel 702 spinning rod, and put my daiwa 2000 advantage spinning reel. The 6lb berkley XL is what i was running in an attempt to get the most bites. I was destroying the 6-8 inch LMB. Seems as though the big girls are still eluding me. The big fish for the day was about a half pound. It was very fat, but short. Looks like there trying to load up for winter. I was running a weightless GYB hula grub in watermelon with gold flake. They wanted it bad. I don't know the lake very well, but the shore is shallow for a long way out, and i know know why i was getting nothing from shore. The water was very clear, and i was getting all the small ones around the docks. I may need to investigate getting a fish finder.

I changed my plans and went in a set of quick dry shorts and was ready to wade out a bit to get away from shore. Things were great for the first few feet and then all muck. The first few steps should have been an indication, but i wanted to make sure. After the third or so step from the sand i was up to my butt in muck and had to work at getting my flip flops back. The sand beach on the north side is good to the lilies but the rest not so much. I got another three shorts, nothing to be proud of for sure. I am hoping things are a lot better from my yak if the moving company ever gets it here. Got one of the fish on a chartreuse and black kvd crank and the other two on a sebert outdoors swim jig with keitech easy shiner trailer.

island lake
8/26/2013

First time out in Wa after paying 50 bucks for the license, and checking out the closest lake to me which is island lake. I found the lake to have a lot of shore access mostly on the north side, where there is a large park. The area with the beach is very shallow, about 4" or so. I did not catch anything on the north edge and several people walking by said there were no fish in the lake. I would never believe that, so i continued. I started with a green pumpkin worm, as they seem to work even for small fish to test the waters. No luck there at all. I switched to my old faithful lure a KVD 1.5 in bluegill and nabbed a small 8" LMB. So fish do live in the lake!!!! I got one other bite ona black silver super spook, an 11" LMB. I missed another strike on the spook. Two hours at a brand new lake in a new state i will be calling that a sucess.

five lakes groton
6/23/2013

Left the house at around 6 and arrived at five lakes about 10 min later. The solunar plot looked great for sunset so off i went. I had not used my new dobyns DX743 so i wanted to spend some time with her. My luck lately at breaking off fluorocarbon due to my crap knot resulted in me fishing strait 20 lb sonic braid. From the way it went i don't think these fish minded so much and i was throwing into and the edge of the pads so it worked out great. I was using a BPS stick o worm the 5 inch version in watermelon red. The hook was a 2/0 gamy wacky hook. I have had some issues with dropping fish at this lake due to the trees not allowing a great hookset and none got away today. The island produced all but one of the fish, but all were in or along the pads. I took off at 8 due to the best part of the area being fished and the hordes of mosquitoes eating me alive. I will not go back without bug spray and recommend you dont either. I must have been bit 100 times no joke.

Took the next door neighbor and his boy and mine out to the lake tonight. It was a fantastic experience. The fish were turned on and my son caught 3 of his own fish from cast to fish in the boat. I have always helped him in some way but this time he did it all. Of course i helped unhook the fish, not wanting a hook in him or the destruction of the fish, but other than that he was the man of the day as far as i was concerned. On top of that he boated as many as i did. Granted they were smaller but i could really give a rip about that at all. Two of the fish were 1/2 to 3/4 bass and a third was a pick. He may have had another bud dad tried to help with a hookset and it was a pick that cut the line. I had three fish as well, a two lb pick, a 1 and a 3 lb LMB. My buddies wife got a fish her first, and he had about 8 LMB with the largest at 2LB.

This lake is a dump, as i have discovered before. I went here only because it is so close to my house and i have been pounding all the other lakes around my house in the evening. The one thing that was special about this trip was a new first. I started by partking at Chuck-e-cheese, and fishing the dam area. I cast right along the dam and nothing. There was a guy siting on the left so that way was blocked. Went over and fished the spillway and zipo there also. I watched the old man leave and headed back to the clearing on and cast to the left, first cast was a 1/2 LMB. Nothing special but now on the map. I worked my way along the shore threw the trees, and hit 4 spots. I made it down to a nice clear area with a bunch of junk on the shore and a target cart in the water at the edge. What the hell i climbed in the cart as it was stable and third cast a 1 1/2 lb LMB from under a tree. Super a bass from a shopping cart. Top that!!!!

Put the kids to bed and headed to smith pond for some top water practice. After the big adventure yesterday to get back my one and only decent popper, i had to get some more time on the water with it. The shore access here is very limited so i went to the one access point and fan casted the entire area. Five fish later it started to sprinkle and i was out. Biggest fish went about a pound and a half, and the rest were in the 1/2 to 3/4 range. The pick was about 14" or so, not big by any means but on top water was a blast.

Ran out to five lakes, and took only three lures. The plan was to become more experenced with topwater baits as i have only fished with them a few times. I got the feel for walking the dog in about an hour and had a lot of fun after that. Only one decent fish, but other good boils and a few misses. Nothing to stop your heart like a giant boil and miss. The fish at the location see all kinds of fishermen and i figured i might show them something other than a worm.

wyassup pond
5/16/2013

Loaded the boat and waited on the school bus to drop off my boy from school. First chance to get back on the water after a two week vacation. I decided to try wyassup for the first time this year and there was a ton of action. I had trout killing themselves to try and take on the #4 willow blade on my spin jig. They hit it over and over. They had no prayer of getting the jig with 5/0 hook in there mouth but that did not seem to bother them at all. The boater that i talked to on the lake said they did a second stocking yesterday. Must not have fed them prior to the release. The keitech swing impact was the most consistant bait of the day with 5 fish, the jerkbait got one and one on the spin jig. The trout were all on the south shore!

babcock pond
4/28/2013

Packed up the car at about 10 ish and headed off to the water. I had never been to Babcock pond but i figured it was worth a go, and would be another lake to check off my list. I pulled up to the put in point about 11 and there was an old man who lived down the street putting in at the same time. He helped me carry the yak down to the water and we had a great chat about the wind and the great bass in the pond. Off i went. The first thing to notice is how shallow the pond is. It may not be the bottom but there were less than 10" of clear water to the weeds and its only APRIL! I moved up the lake and was using a 4" bluegill keitech easy shiner, getting a few nibbles, but no takes in the lower areas of the pond. I paddled back to the main lake looking for some deeper water. I tossed the shiner and snatched up a huge gill. Not what i expected but first fish of the day i'll take it. Paddled around a while longer and got tired of the wind. I hot tailed it to the bay on the far end of the lake on the right. Found a nice little bit of brush to crash the yak up onto for the wind and started casting, 5 small bass later i was in business. I repositioned and got two small pickerel in the same spot. I moved across the bay, and cast almost to shore. I thought i had hooked into the mother load. Cranked, and cranked, and the boat was moving to the catch. Well i'll do whatever it takes. It started to move slowly to the right, and finaly i saw my catch. I managed to hook into a giant snapping turtle. The keiteh's seem to be the way to go. I shifted to the opposite bay on the left and got a bit off a few times, and gave up on the swim baits. It was getting expensive so i switched to the baby brush hawg. That was a good choice, and i got my largest of the day. Only 14" but bigger than the rest. The left bay produced a few more small pics and bass, and i headed back. I was trying to fish on the way back to the ramp but the wind was so strong i had a bow wake from being pushed so fast.

Long pond
4/20/2013

The day started off with no intention to go fishing. I sat around the house and was going to just hang out. Well by 11 i was all filled up with doing nothing and decided i would try long pond and go elsewhere if it was just way to crowded. Last year was bumper boats and it was just crazy. When i rolled up the launch was full, but i only saw 4 boats on the lake. Well thats just about how it was from 12 to 6 PM when i left. Have no idea if the trouters limited out and left or what, but it was not the mess i delt with last year. I launched and started working the flat right off the launch just out of range of the shore casters. No miracle first cast, but on my third i had a 3lb10oz LMB. I was supper excited as it was my first quality fish of the year. What a start, i worked my way down the shore line and nothing happened until mid lake. I had a monster hit. I began reeling, but unlike the bass it started peeling line off my reel. My drag was not locked down but it was stiff to say the least. I was wondering if i somehow was going to get a teener today, but then it jumped. What, at this point i believed i had a left over salmon, from the stocking last year. Five min later i had a 4lb 12oz brown trout in my YAK. Best fighting fish of my life and a new personal best. These large brown trout up here seem to like crankbaits as my last large brown came on a #10 flatrap. I took a few min to calm down and continued to work the shore. I nabbed a few pickerel and made it to the large bay on the right near the dam. I got a 14" LBM on the green carpeted dock, my first jig fish of the year. Feeling good i fished the bay and made it around to the big rock that sits opposite of the bay, and then it happened. I hooked into a large pick and he swam away with my favorite squarebill and only fish producing lure of the day. Considering all that happened and the great fish i had caught, i called it even. I tied on my shad squarebill and fish my way back to the launch with no other fish.

3/10/2013

Launched at lake of the isles about 0930. There was one other boat trailer in the lot which was supprising to say the least, but always glad to see I am not the only one who is nuts for fishing. I spotted the other boater right away and he was working his way back to the ramp. I headed over to see how he did and what he was using. He reported that he had launched at 0700 and had been using crank baits earlier but was now trying a jig. He had nothing in the boat to that point when I left him, and he pulled out right about 10 when I was landing my first fish. I had two for the day the first being a pounder or so bass, and the next cast I pulled up a 14" pick. Three and a half hours later I left with the first two being the only fish of the day. Both fish were caught on a pearl jerkbait made by strike king. I would have posted the hotspots but the map is not working right now...

Launched at noon, with my son in the back. Expecting nothing was the mindset so any fish in the boat would be all gravy. Loaded my options and put the strike king squarebil on and never took it off. Three fish in the boat by the end of the day, one half pound bass and two pickeral. Let the boy crank in the last one so he could have some fun to. i ment to let him have the second, but i got over excited and had it in the boat before i could turn it over. Another day on the water, and thats always a good day. Drug the boy out to meet matt and we chased the frozen fish. It was nice out at 67 but there was a lot of confused wind. One second it was blowing us toward the dam and then we would move and then it would shift and push us the other way... Big thumbs up to the captain on smooth boat control. There was not a lot of activity in the lower section with one other person fishing, and one person just cruising when we first got there, When the sun showed it was nice but we had clouds most of the day. If it was mid summer we would have been beating them off the end of the lure, with the same conditions.
