Two Rod Broke In Same Day For Steelhead!

I went to check for ice on one of my favorite trout lake for ice-fishing. But there was no ice at all! I decided to cast couple of time to see what happens. At around 15-20 cast, i got hooked up! But my rod was snapped in half instantly. It was broke at between 3-4th eyes. (I have 6 eyes on my rod. Anyway, I had my drag low for trout due to soft mouth. I had everything going on my way but puzzled how rod can broke that fast during the battle. I was still battling the trout until I can see steelhead jumping and hook come out at exactly moment! Bummer! But lucky, I usually have back up pole to go. I tried to cast couple of time. Maybe at 10 casts, I got another hook-up. rod was snapped in half instantly again! But this time, it was broke off where my cork that hold on the reel. This is my first time that rod broke on me. I never had one rod broke on my whole lifetime.

my question is my rod is broke due to cold? (temp was around 30-35) my rod is gsx titanium med-heavy (I just brought this rod at couple month ago) and buzz rod (custom made from texas, I owned this rod for almost 12 years now)

  • a small dink in the rod plus the cold weather could definitely do it.

  • thorn 168 - I just answered your question at previous comment. And yeah, you are probably right about that.

  • pirougejoe - you are probably right. Bait shop was puzzled how I can broke both rods.
Gsx rod have been abused lot of monster size fish. (12lbs brown, 45lbs salmon, 7lbs largemouth bass, and 14 pound steelhead.) meanwhile buzz rod has more abused than Gsx. (used at saltwater too) that is reason why I brought gsx rod for keep my older rod alive for couple of years. But I guess I was wrong.

  • Where both rods "veterans" of several large fish battles? If so it is possible that micro fractures could have formed in the rod blanks due to prior stress. Also freezing temperatures can make rods brittle.

  • I am not sure what causes that.. perhaps a defect in the material construction coupled with cold weather.. it could be several variables. I too had this happen to me while Stripper Fishing in the Canal...I had a wicked strike and hook up and the rod I was using just snaped at the cork handle about 5" up from the reel mount.
Took it Rod store and they could not prvide an explaination as to why.. If I recall correctly the guy what did you do step on it?

    Nope... just stripper fishing.

  • I'll going out there again when I have spare time to do it!
