The FREAK- My Birthday Came Early!

I just got back from another Thursday night softball game, a nice victory. I wasn't planning on fishing tonight due to weather.com showing that we would have 10-12 mph winds. When I got home I looked out and realized it was almost glass so I decided to head out on Maspy for a bit. I started with a Jitterbug and I was hitless through 15 minutes near the Bermuda Triangle. It's about 10:45 roughly 20 minutes into the trip when I started to get action. Within about 6 casts I caught 2 largemouth bass and a sunfish. The wind started to pick up a bit and I found myself drifting. I continued to cast and landed a nice 3 pound bass- solid fight.

The wind picked up again and I realized the jitterbug wasn't making as loud as a retrieve it normally causes so I decided to switch to a 7 inch swimbait to see if I could find a monster and I had a lot of luck on big swimbaits last year. About 5 casts into the lure change I get a major strike. The fish smashed it off the surface and took my line for a ride. It took about 40 seconds to bring the fish in and then it started taking 5-10 feet of drag at a time. At this point I knew it was freak of a bass and continued to keep pressure on the fish while not being greedy. A few more seconds go by before the tug of war ceases and I netted the beauty. Hell yeah!!! I was solo angling so I took the fish home for a photo shoot- 6 pounds even and 21 inches long. The ironic part of the night is the fact we got our new softball jersey's and I was able to showcase it on this trip. Thanks for the early Birthday present!
