Squam Lake

Week vacation with Bro Joe and I resulted in many sore mouthed Smallies and even a half dozen Largies. Beautiful calm overcast conditions greeted us for the first 3 days and weather got quite a bit windier as days went on. Water temps ranged from 54 to 72. We witnessed smallies just starting to mate and found some bedding bass but concluded that this years spawn was not at all organized around any time table as we believe to be catching pre, post, and spawning smallies. Largies were cruising and eating, spawn to follow. 25 -30 fish days were the norm with one day of a coldfront left us running around wondering where they were. Biggest smallies were in the 3lb range largemouths 2 -3 lbs. Many were caught! Off shore rock piles shoals and marker bouys provided the bigger fish. a few nice ones had up tight along shore bedding. Baits with best results were mini spidergrubs, lizards on a 1/4 oz carolina rig, and any color wacky rigged senko. It was cool seeing the Bald Eagle out on Little Loon Is. This trip was a great time getting away with my Brother and we found Squam to be back up to full pool and the bass active unlike my last trip Sept. 2010.
