Weekly Saltwater Fishing Report

Below is a weekly saltwater fishing report courtesy of Pat Abate at Rivers End Tackle (www.riversendtackle.com).

Date: Fri, 9 May 2008 09:54:48 -0400
Report: STRIPED BASS - Theres going to be some interesting times this coming week.
Todays rains should move the bass and bait around and thats to be expected.
When the River calms down it should solidify the fishing. Old news, last
week had some poor days on the Connecticut River. There were some good
numbers occasionally, but it was inconsistent. The most activity is still
the Lieutenant River to Blackhall River along Great Island. There have been
some larger bass showing up in the last couple of days. They are hitting
surface lures now and one of the best fish finders to use at this time is
the 9" Slug-go. We are approaching mid May and the smaller schoolies will be
thinning out. Shore bound anglers are still scoring with consistency at
Saybrook Point and the DEP Piers. News of bass outside the River has been
sparse however that should change next week.

BLUEFISH - They've been at Millstone for the past week and should be in
the Connecticut River in the next few days. The run we've heard of in NY
have been numerous and up to the mid teens in size.

FLOUNDER - If you read last weeks report its not as good. We have heard
of only an occasional flat being caught.

FLUKE- Season is closed in Connecticut but open in RI and open in NY on
May 15th.

BLACKFISH - The season is closed.

Report: THIS IS A TEST RE-SEND FROM LAST WEEK

STRIPED BASS - More reports have been coming in this week as the first
of the migratory bass are moving up the coast. I don't expect to see to
o much activity in the main body of the Connecticut River for at least a f
ew days during heavy flooding. Hamburg Cove should still fish pretty wel
l, reports for this past week have been good there. Get the boat ready t
his week, by next weekend we should have a lot more migratory schoolies in
the lower River. The Thames and Housatonic Rivers were on their game th
is past week, the Niantic which has a smaller population of winterover bas
s was also good. 20

FLOUNDER - A few more hearty souls ventured out this week with mixed r
esults. Not all scored, the only catches we heard of came from the Niant
ic River and Bluff Point. Water temps are still on the cooler side, hope
is they'll turn on as the water warms.20
The season is 4/1 to 5/30 with the limit of 10 fish at 12" or greater.

BLACKFISH - No reports this week, but it still is worth a shot. Spri
ng season ends at the end of the month.

Report: This is our first report of the season and I wish it was more inspirationa
l as I look out at the rain and the forecast of more rain.
STRIPED BASS - The March / April run of winter over bass has been good
for the last few weeks. Bass have been hitting
somewhat regularly in the lower Housatanic and upper Thames Rivers.
Hamburg Cove turned on a couple of weeks ago20
with good schoolie action. We haven't heard about any migratory stri
ped bass yet. I expect we should have some in the20
lower Connecticut River about mid month.
There have been no changes in striped bass regulations this year.

FLOUNDER - This was the opening week of the season. We had a few mix
ed reports come in from Bluff Point and not much20
more. We suspect the weather kept the effort down. We have worms a
nd chum in stock for the hearty souls braving the weather.
The season is 4/1 to 5/30 with the limit of 10 fish at 12" or greater.

Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, November 30th, 2007
This will be our last report for the season.

STRIPED BASS- Its pretty near over except for school bass in and near the
mouth of the Thames River. Theres schoolies at Harkness on a sporadic b
asis, if its anything like last year they'll be close to the beach through
out December. There were some better sized bass caught last weekend at L
ong Sand Shoal but we haven't heard anything from there in the last few da
ys. Theres not too many boats out there to get reports from. The RI Sh
ore has birds working several hundred yards offshore. Close to the beach
theres schools of peanut bunker traveling unmolested. Reports from Long
Island have mostly small schoolies on the Southshore Beaches.

BLUEFISH- Gonzo.

BLACKFISH- The diehards are still getting 'em at Southwest and other loca
l reefs.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For
more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

WINTER

Date: Fri, 23 Nov 2007 12:06:41 -0500
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, November 2
3rd, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Ain't over but the fat lady is in the wings. The usual 1
to 2 foot schoolies are congregating on the beaches from Rhode Island to O
ld Saybrook. The best results we heard this week have been at Ocean Beac
h in New London, Harkness and the Causeway in Old Saybrook. If past perf
ormance is an indicator the area in and near the mouth of the Thames River
should have bass through December. The RI beaches have had some small sc
hoolies early and late in the day, no gannets or herring have been seen in
the last few days. Earlier this week there were still some jumbo bass o
n Long Sand Shoal for eel drifters.

BLUEFISH- Very few reported this week, most of those were caught on bait.

BLACKFISH- Still god reports coming from Southwest Reef.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For
more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, November 1
6th, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Still ain't over ! The larger ones are getting harder to fi
nd but theres still plenty of little ones, they even seem to be getting sm
aller. Theres a lot of 15" to 20" schoolies around. The mouths of the
Connecticut and Thames Rivers have lots of little guys, look around the mo
uths of North and South Coves. Surface lures will work sometimes, buckta
ils and plastic tails work most of the time. Some schools have been on t
he surface near the Rivers and Hatchetts. The Causeway is one of the bes
t bets from shore. They were still getting some bigger bass earlier in th
e week at Long Sand Shoal by drifting eels.

BLUEFISH- Numbers are on a downer, those remaining are big. The mouths
of the Connecticut and Niantic Rivers are best with bait outfishing lures.
A few still on Long Sand Shoal.

BLACKFISH- No letup. Still getting some good reports from shallower spo
ts, but the best consistency is coming from both inner and outer Southwest
Reef.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - We haven't heard of any catches this week, but a
large school was spotted off the Thames River.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For
more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2007 12:37:18 -0500
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, November 9
th, 2007

STRIPED BASS- It ain't anywhere near over. The run of 1 to 2 foot schoo
lies that we see in mid-October are here in force now. Theres a bunch of
them in the mouth of the Connecticut River, Niantic Bay, the Rhode Island
Beaches and inside Napatree Point. From shore its been good at the Caus
eway and the Jordan Cove Bridge for the little guys. The Race has mostly
small to medium sized bass while Long Sand Shoal has some jumbos on drift
ed eels. Hatchetts Reef has small to large bass on jigs such as Storm Sh
ads. On the bait front, the adult bunker have all but disappeared but th
e peanuts are still here in force, hickory shad are still in the Connectic
ut and Niantic Rivers.

BLUEFISH- They are still here but not as many. Some jumbos are still in
the mouth of the River and Long Sand Shoal. The mouth of the Niantic Ri
ver also has some real big boys.

BLACKFISH- Still real good and big. Southwest Reef is good to great wit
h most anglers getting limits. Hatchetts has smaller fish and some bigge
r ones at Black Point.

PORGIES- Season closed/

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - They're still around with fish being spotted off
Harkness and Jordan cove this week.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For
more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2007 11:13:40 -0500
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, October
26th, 2007
We will be skipping next weeks report- I'll be chasing bonefish. We'll
update the report on November 9th.

STRIPED BASS- Theres been more and smaller bass around this week. The usual
late fall school bass are gathering along the shoreline with some good
reports coming from Fishers Island Sound to the Connecticut River. Small
bass have been near the mouths of North and South Coves in the River and
running east from Griswold Point to Black Point. The Causeway has had a mix
of bass, blues and shad. The larger bass along the shore have been hot on
the bunker leaving the estuaries, find some adult bunkers and the cows won't
be too far away. The mouth of the Niantic River has had some pushes on
bunker and hickory shad. We have had a few reports of larger bass on Long
Sand Shoal hitting drifted whole or chunked bunker. The action at both
Montauk and the Rhode Island beaches has picked up the last few days and
the wind forecast the next couple of days should even be better.

BLUEFISH- Good to overwhelming! Blues from 2 to 12 pounds are abundant from
the Westbrook to Westerly Beaches and near shore waters. The Old Saybrook
Town Beach has had some fairly consistent blitzes at dusk and dawn. Anglers
throwing chunks from the DEP Piers and Saybrook Point are getting mixed
sizes. They have also been along the Fenwood shore. The usual choppers are
at the Race and Plum Gut.

BLACKFISH- Still good with the most consistent catches coming from 20' and
under. Hatchetts, Bartletts, Black Point and Seaside have all been good but
its apparent that fishing pressure is taking its toll as the fish are
getting smaller.

PORGIES- Also real good at Southwest and Hatchetts - Remember the season
closes on October 31st.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - The only recent sightings have been at Millstone.

BLUE CRABS- In spite of my denial they still caught good numbers in the
River this week.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For more
detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2007 14:03:20 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, October
19th, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Not too much change over last week. Theres been a fair amount
of school bass along the shoreline on a night bite, daytime activity has
been slow for this time of year.
Where there has been peanut bunker there has been some daytime action, it
seems the night bait has been silversides hugging the shore. At the first
sign of light in the sky they head out. Theres still adult bunker and
hickory shad in the Connecticut River and some of those baits are getting a
few cows on the local reefs during the day. Bartletts and Hatchetts are also
giving up some medium to large bass on night drifts.

BLUEFISH- They are getting bigger, I've seen some choppers pushing high
teen sizes. They have been hitting the Old Saybrook and Westbrook town
beaches for the last few weeks particularly at dusk and dawn. There have
also been a few blitzes along Route 154 along Fenwood. Boats patrolling
either side of the mouth of the Connecticut River have been hitting surface
blues regularly.

BLACKFISH- The best reports are coming from Hatchetts and Bartletts with
limit catches being common. There have also been good reports from some of
the smaller reefs such as Cranes but they have not been as consistent.
Southwest Reef is also good but its a lot of competition from porgies. It
seems like another good run with a slight tapering off in numbers.

PORGIES- No let up. Really good fishing at Southwest, Hatchetts and
Bartletts.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - Theres some pockets of both bonito and albies on
this side of the Sound. Black Point and the western end of Fishers Island
Sound have had some random schools this week including some giant albies.

BLUE CRABS- My reports of their departure last week were premature. After I
said they were gone several people reported great catches. I'll stick my
neck out and say its over-again!

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Acklins Island in the Bahamas in November
and one in Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For more detail call Pat
860-388-2283.

Date: Fri, 12 Oct 2007 10:39:52 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, October
12th, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Some optimism. Its a little less dismal locally as reports
this last week have improved and it seems that there are still a lot of bass
north of us. Theres plenty of baitfish to go around much of it is still
holed up in the estuaries. Some bigger bass have been caught at Bartletts on
night drifts and school bass in the area have increased. Good schoolie
fishing off Waterford and through Groton has been going on all week. we have
also had good reports of schoolies in the mouth of the Connecticut River.
Theres been a pickup in bass fishing along the Rhode Island beaches and the
Watch Hill Reefs. I still don't think the bassing is up to what it should be
for this time of year but theres enough indicators that theres hope to a
stronger finish for the fall run.

BLUEFISH- Theres been no let up on the bluefish assault. Good catches have
been the norm from both beach and boat. The mouth of the Connecticut and
Niantic Rivers have been stocked with a real odd mix of sizes. In the same
school you might have blues ranging from 4 to 12 pounds. For the shorebound
they have been scoring at the Old Saybrook and Westbrook town beaches with
the best results coming on fresh bunker or shad. The DEP Piers and Saybrook
Point have had some sporadic results. The Rhode Island beaches have had a
few blitzes.

SNAPPERS- Gonzo, no reports or lack of interest this week.

BLACKFISH- Its going good with reports of limit catches at Southwest and
Hatchetts Reefs. Most rockpiles are yielding some blacks and the most
consistent results are coming from depths of 25' or less.

PORGIES- Good to great reports coming from Cornfield, Hatchetts, Bartletts
and Black Point. A few nice bonus seabass have been in the mix on clam
baits.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - Much less activity this week. Montauk has been slow
and just scattered albies on this side. A few bonito have been around Groton
and inside Fishers Island.

BLUE CRABS- Few reports this week except for some incidental and accidental
catches in the River channel.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Acklins Island in the Bahamas in November
and one in Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For more detail call Pat
860-388-2283.

Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2007 15:18:00 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, October 5th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Theres been an improvement over last week but all things
considered it not up to par, considering the amount of bait and the time of
year. The hope is that its the warmer weather and lack of the usual fall
northeasters. Schoolies have picked up a bit along the shoreline and in the
Connecticut, Thames and Niantic Rivers. It seems that the peanut bunkers are
taking refuge in the estuaries and the smaller bass are munching on them. The
Race and Plum Gut have been equally slow with a few more medium sized bass.
Long Sand Shoal has picked up this week on night ebb tides for eel drifters.

BLUEFISH- They're big and and plentiful. The mouth of the Connecticut and
Niantic Rivers have marauders being caught on chunks mostly on ebb tides
both from shore and boat. The bait in most spots is peanut bunkers and some
adults. They have been chasing bait on top in and near the mouth of the
River. The Old Saybrook Town Beach has been the sight of some dusk blitzes
this week.

SNAPPERS- Reports have been slower this week but it seems that a few bigger
ones are around.

BLACKFISH- Reports this second week of the season show a slight slowdown on
the shallower reefs. Hatchetts is still good and Southwest Reef has picked
up this week.

PORGIES- Continues to be good at Hatchetts, Bartletts and Southwest Reefs.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - There were a few good mornings at Jordan Cove and
Pine Island with a mix of both albies and a few bonito. Theres been a slow
pick at both Watch Hill and the Sluiceway. Montauk was hot early in the week
and fizzled by Wednesday.

BLUE CRABS- They're still here. Normally they should be heading for deeper
water now and can be taken in traps.

BONEFISH- No they're not in the River but we're expecting them south this
winter. We have a group trip to Acklins Island in the Bahamas in November
and one in Los Roques, Venezuela in February. For more detail call Pat
860-388-2283.

Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2007 14:54:17 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, September
28th, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Considering the time of year the bass fishing is only fair.
Theres a decent population of small to medium sized bass along the shoreline
from here to Pt. Judith. Given the amount of baitfish around there should be
more bass. The Race, Sluiceway and Plum Gut have a good run of smaller bass
with an occasional larger one. Hatchetts, Bartletts and Long Sand Shoal have
had some better sizes on live bait if you can get in between the blues.
Theres still schoolies in the mouth of the River. The run hasn't started in
Montauk yet either from shore or boat. Rhode Island has also slowed a bit
since the weekend.

BLUEFISH- This is one of the larger runs we've seen in the last few years
with a very good mix of sizes. You don't have to go very far, sometimes even
north of the I-95 Bridge. The mouth of the Connecticut River is a good place
to start with some surface action but the most consistent action on bait.
Theres a combination of peanut and adult bunker in the River and outside.
The usual spots such a the Race, Plum Gut , Pigeon Rip and Southwest Reef
all have good fishing on diamond jigs.

SNAPPERS- They are starting to thin out in number but their size is 8" and
sometimes larger. Best spots are still the Causeway and Saybrook Point.

BLACKFISH- Season started out very good with mostly limit catches reported
from Hatchetts, Southwest Reef and Black Point.

PORGIES- Continues to be strong at Hatchetts, Bartletts and Southwest Reefs.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - It appears that the large schools that were north
of us are starting to move. Some large school are in Montauk though not
always jumping on the hooks. There was action this week at the Pine Island -
Bluff Point area, Jordan Cove and Black Point. The RI shore has a few
schools hitting close in at Weekapaug and running along the beaches from
Watch Hill to Pt. Judith.

BLUE CRABS- They are still here on borrowed time. The mild weather hasn't
moved them out.

BONEFISH- Not too good locally but we're expecting them south this winter.
We have a trip to Acklins Island in the Bahamas in November and one in Los
Roques, Venezuela in February. For more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2007 14:53:56 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, September
21st, 2007

STRIPED BASS- Theres been a surprise population of school bass in the mouth
of the Connecticut River. They have been along Great Island and the adjacent
flats just like Spring. Chunkers have also been getting bass in the River
mixed in with the blues. The Race and Plum Gut have some medium sized bass
while the closer reefs have been yielding larger bass on live bait. The
Rhode Island beaches have been very good from Watch Hill to Point Judith
with most of the bass action after dark and some blitzes at daybreak. So far
this has been one of the best starts to a fall run than we have seen in many
years.

BLUEFISH- Another bright spot. You know its good when you get more
complaints about blues getting the bait or lures before the bass and
quitting because of sore arms. The race and Gut have the usual, but the
River and just outside has had a lot of blitzes sometimes lasting an hour or
more. At times the blitzes have been under the I-95 Bridge. From shore the
chunkers at the DEP piers and Saybrook Point have been getting a few blues
up to the mid-teens in size.

SNAPPERS- Theres hasn't been any let up yet as some of the snappers are 8
inches and a few longer. The best bets are still in some moving water near
the Causeway and DEP piers.

BLACKFISH- Season closed, will reopen on the 22nd.

PORGIES- Good to very good at Hatchetts, Bartletts and Cranes. Some hot
fishing near Plum Gut and Race Rock lighthouses.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - A strange season, but aren't they all when it comes
to albies. There's still some decent reports from eastern RI and
inconsistent fishing at Montauk. A few catches have been reported along the
Waterford beaches. It seems to be that the majority of albacore are north of
Point Judith. Theres also been a few odd catches on the north side of Plum
Island and the Sluiceway but not very consistent at all. The Jordan Cove
area has had a few albies, bonito and even a couple of Spanish mackeral.

BLUE CRABS- Some very excellent catches from both North and South Coves on
the River as well as the DEP Piers and Oyster River. Theres no let up yet,
if the current weather pattern continues we should have a few more weeks of
crabs.

BONEFISH- Not too good locally but we're expecting them south this winter.
We have a trip to Acklins Island in the Bahamas in November and one in Los
Roques, Venezuela in February. For more detail call Pat 860-388-2283.

Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, September
7th, 2007
SEA LINK, LTD. IS HAVING ITS FINAL TACKLE CLEARANCE THIS WEEKEND SEE DETAILS
BELOW

STRIPED BASS- The baitfish supply is on the increase with more adult bunker
in the River over the last few days. However there hasn't been a
proportionate increase in the number of larger bass to go along with it.
There have been a few jumbos including two 50's from Long Sand Shoal this
week as well as a few big bass from Black Point. The Race and Plum Gut are
shy on both numbers and size of bass this week. Schoolies are still popping
up along the local beaches but not as good as last week, I suspect with the
southerly winds forecast for the next few days we should see an increase in
near shore activity. Peanut bunker and silversides are still very
concentrated on the near shore areas from here through the Rhode Island
coast. Follow the bait!

BLUEFISH- Its been blitz week. Blues have been hitting the peanuts from the
Connecticut River right through the Rhode Island South Shore Beaches. Sizes
have been running from 2 to 12 pounds. Early and late in the day have been
best but they were blitzing just outside the River yesterday at the crack of
noon. Its time to start watching the town beaches at dusk. Jigging at the
Race and Gut is good at times with the best bet Pigeon Rip on the flood
tide.

SNAPPERS- Its fair to good. Best spots have been at both DEP Piers,
Lieutenant River and the causeway.

FLUKE- Closed in Connecticut, open in RI and NY through September 16th. You
can catch Fluke in NY and RI but you cannot bring them into CT waters.

BLACKFISH- Season closes tomorrow September 8th, will reopen on the 22nd.

PORGIES- Good to very good at Hatchetts, Bartletts and Cranes.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - Bonito are still around but rarer. Albacore are
thickening with good concentrations from Fishers Island and east and
Montauk. Some fish are in Plum Gut and the north side of Plum Island.

BLUE CRABS- Some very excellent catches from both North and South Coves on
the River as well as the DEP Piers and Oyster River.

Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2007 13:49:43 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, August 31st,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Theres more peanuts on the shoreline than we've seen in a
couple of years and thats driving bass and other species near shore to
feast. Most of the bass are schoolies with an occasional jumbo in the mix.
They have been hitting a variety of surface and sub-surface lures, when
practical use a single hook lure. Its been a while since we've seen so many
fat and sassy bass at this time of year. Theres still some jumbo bass on the
reefs such as Bartlett, Hatchetts and Black Point with almost all catches
coming on live bait.

BLUEFISH- The peanuts that are bringing in the bass mentioned earlier are
doing the same with blues. Theres been some blitzes along the beaches from
the Old Saybrook Town Beach to Waterford Town Beach, both day and night.
Look for the bait the choppers aren't too far behind. The Race, Plum Gut and
Pigeon Rip also have blues but often not as good as the shoreline. Chunkers
are getting some in the River but its not been a fast bite.

SNAPPERS- Its been good at the Causeway, Saybrook Point and the DEP Piers
with many of them approaching 6".

FLUKE- Its the last roundup with the season expiring in Connecticut on
Wednesday September 5th, the last day you can possess fluke on the states
waters. In RI the season end on 9/16 and NY has no closed season but theres
talk they might have an emergency closure next week. Block Island is still
very good and we have had some reports as had the Ruins and Gardiners. Near
shore in CT has been quiet, but with all the peanut bunker around they may
feast in shallow water for the next few days.

BLACKFISH- Some limit catches being reported from Hatchetts and Southwest
Reef.

PORGIES- They are out there with not too much effort being given them in the
last few weeks. We have had some good reports from Cranes, Hatchetts and
Cornfield.

BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE - Theres still some bonito around the Rhode Island
shore and they have been joined by a mass of albies. We have had some very
good reports the last few days on large schools from Charlestown to Newport.

BLUE CRABS- Some excellent catches from both North and South Coves on the
River as well as the DEP Piers and Oyster River.

Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2007 16:09:03 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, August 24th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The bunker moved back in force this morning from Westbrook to
New London and beyond. While theres mostly blues on them the bass aren't too
far away. Even though last weeks weather may have felt like fall its still
the dog days of August as far as bass go. Theres been a few big bass
reported from Hatchetts and Southwest on live bait and I believe we're still
knocking off the remainder of summer residents. The Race has had some medium
sized bass if you can get through the blues.
The schoolies are running fair to good for August along the shoreline from
Old Saybrook to Waterford. Rhode Island beaches have also had a good
population of small bait and adult bunker with mixed sizes of bass. Theres
been schoolies at the Causeway bridges near daybreak.

BLUEFISH- Just in time for the WICC Contest the blues have sent in the
reserves. Bunker schools have increased and drawn more blues close to shore.
The Connecticut River was good this morning with choppers busting the bunker
schools. Theres been intermittent blitzes all week when the two parties get
together. The Race, Plum Gut have a good bunch of mixed sizes but the bigger
boys tend to be in or near theRiver and smaller reefs.

SNAPPERS- Snappering seems to have leveled out this week with fish still
running below 6". The Causeway, DEP Piers and Town Dock are good bets.

FLUKE- We had some good reports this week from Black Point but not much from
the shallower waters. Theres been some decent reports from NY around the
Ruins and Gardiners. Don't give up on the last roundup, we should see some
good doormats these next two weeks.

PORGIES- Good sized porgies are on the local reefs in fair numbers. Cranes,
Cornfield, Hens and Chickens as well as Hatchetts are all worthwhile.

BONITO- Bonito reports are waning this weeks as rumors of False Albacore are
increasing.
There have been a few credible odd one fish catches in the Sound. They are
on the Vineyard now and thats a good sign, we should see some by weeks end.

BLUE CRABS- Very good reports came in this week for both trappers and
scoopers. All the coves in the lower River had good catches for traps and
most pilings in the marinas are being worked hard.

Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2007 11:46:28 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, August 17th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The bunker schools seem to be increasing around the mouth of
the Connecticut River and thats making daytime live bait fishing easier. It
doesn't seem that theres more large bass around but that they just can't
pass up that bunker. Some jumbos are coming from Hatchetts, Black Point,
Southwest Reef and Long Sand Shoal shortly after daybreak. These larger bass
are probably some of the summer reef residents, give them a shot at coming
back next summer. The number of school bass along the shoreline has been
pretty good for the past few weeks with some surface action. Drifting in the
Race has been a bit better but not hot over the last week. Bait casters at
the mouth of the River have picked up a few nice bass on chunks from
Saybrook Point.

BLUEFISH- The Connecticut River has increased its bluefish population over
the last week as the supply of baitfish has gone up. Both shore and boat
fishermen have been scoring mostly on bait. Theres also been a healthy run
of choppers along the shoreline and local reefs. The Race and Plum Gut have
been good as has Southwest Reef and Cornfield Point. The WICC Bluefish
Contest starts next weekend with a better distribution of bunker for
Eastern Long Island Sound.

SNAPPERS- As long as the tide is flowing well theres been good snappering at
the DEP Piers, Saybrook Point and the Causeway.

FLUKE- Its been slowing down for the last week in the River and the
shallower waters adjacent to it. Some good catches have still been coming
from Block Island and Gardiners. The deep waters off Black Point are still
worthwhile, theres still some of the best of jumbo fishing to come.

PORGIES- Theres still a lot of porgies out there with not too much pressure
on them. The smaller reefs such as Cranes and Cornfield have been good for
those trying.

BONITO- Theres been a bunch of sighting and a better catches at Jordan Cove,
Watch Hill, Plum Gut and Weekapaug. Try for fluke off the Rhode Island South
Shore and you'll probably run into bonito, be unprepared for them and your
chances of seeing them will increase.

BLUE CRABS- Good reports coming from the Oyster River, DEP Piers, and North
Cove.

Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2007 23:08:42 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, August 10th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The excitement for stripers lately isn't the size but the
behavior of the bass. For several weeks now there have been schools, at
times an acre in size, in unison on the surface from Watch Hill to Plum
Island. They appear to be sipping juvenile baitfish and flyrodders have met
the challenge best with less frustration than most other anglers.
On the local reefs such as Hatchetts, Long Sand and Southwest the live bait
crowd has been scoring with a few jumbos. The Race and Plum gut remain
pretty quiet on the bass front.
School bass are still making a surface presence along the Old Lyme to Black
Point area at times of low light.

BLUEFISH- The action from shore at the mouth of the River has slowed this
past week, some choppers are being landed particularly at night at the DEP
Piers and Saybrook Point. There have also been some blues from shore at
Niantic. The Race and Plum Gut have the normal summer load of blues with
some surface appearance at low light and slack tide. Smaller blues are also
showing up on the surface early and late in the day at Hatchetts.

SNAPPERS- A good run underway at the DEP Piers and the Causeway. They're now
4 to 6 inches.

FLUKE- The run at Block Island has been good with some great sizes. Black
Point is still giving up some doormats but not many fish. Long Sand Shoal
has mostly shorts.

PORGIES- Mixed sizes are coming from the local reefs. Bartletts, Cranes,
Hatchetts have a fair amount of fish.

BONITO- Theres been a bunch of sighting and a few catches at Watch Hill,
Plum Gut and Weekapaug. There have been fewer reports this week.

BLUE CRABS- Good reports coming from the Oyster River, DEP Piers, and North
Cove.

Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2007 13:01:01 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, August 3rd,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Last weeks trend upward fizzled this week. The bait supply
has stayed about the same but the bass on the reefs have been harder to come
by. I don't think we can keep taking the summer residents off the reefs and
expect them to be replaced. Southwest and Hatchetts have given up a few
jumbos, the Race has been slow and Plum Gut has given up a few to live bait.
Tube and worm trolling has been catching mostly schoolies along the Old Lyme
to Waterford shoreline with an occaisional jumbo. Theres been a good bunch
of schoolies on the surface at dawn and dusk near Hatchetts and at times
they're at Bartletts too . The surface sipping bass are still in the Watch
Hill to Plum Island area. A few anglers are scoring, mostly on flies
imitating minute herring.

BLUEFISH- Activity remains steady in the lower Connecticut River for both
the shore and boat anglers with some choppers approaching the double digit
mark. Fresh bunker or hickory shad has been the best producer. Southwest
Reef has had some mixed sized blues hitting jigs, the same for Plum Gut. The
Race has had some decent days on jigs but not everyday. The blues are also
on the surface in the evenings along the Old Lyme beaches.

SNAPPERS- They are here in decent enough size and numbers to make it
worthwhile. The DEP Piers, Saybrook Point, Blackhall River and the Causeway
have 4" plus snappers.

FLUKE- Its about the same as last week. When boat traffic permits the River
has had a mix of sizes with a fair percentage of keepers. The best reports
are from the Black Point to Hatchetts in 50' plus of depth. Soundview in 30'
of water has a mix of sizes.

BLACKFISH- No reports and green crabs are hard to get but there are
blackfish on the reefs all summer for the dedicated.

PORGIES- Decent reports of them at Hatchetts and Bartletts.

BONITO- Theres been a bunch of sighting and a few catches at Watch Hill,
Plum Gut and Weekapaug.

BLUE CRABS- Good not great reports coming from the Oyster River, DEP Piers,
and North Cove.

Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2007 12:16:55 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, July 27th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Its been a better week for bass. School to medium sized bass
have been reported from Watch Hill to Plum Gut with acre sized schools
finning on the surface. It appears that these fish are feeding on some sort
of small crustacean. They're difficult but not impossible to entice.
Drifting at Southwest Reef has been good on most morning and night tides
with live bait. The Race and Plum Gut have had a better week, though still
not up to par. Theres been a few schools of bunker along the Old Lyme to
Waterford shoreline and thats been attracting some larger bass to that area.
Hatchetts and some of the other local rockpiles have given up some cows on
live bunker or hickory shad. Theres been an increase in the shad in both the
Connecticut and Niantic Rivers.

BLUEFISH- The blues at the mouth of the Connecticut River have increased a
bit this week both for shore and boat anglers. Saybrook Point is still the
center of shore activity with some action at the DEP Piers. Fresh chunks of
bunker or shad are best. The Race, Plum Gut and Pigeon are up to par with
blues while action at the closer reefs is sporadic. Snappers are increasing
at the DEP Piers, Causeway and Saybrook Point, they're in the 4" range now.

FLUKE- The good not great season moves on. Theres still a fair number of
doormats coming from the depths of Black Point and Hatchetts. The River is a
little slower this week but still worthwhile if the boat traffic permits.
Long Sand Shoal has a lot of shorts. Fishers Island is sporadic, but when
its on they have good sized.

BLACKFISH- A few dedicated anglers are doing pretty well at some of the
local reefs.

PORGIES- Its getting better at Hatchetts, Bartletts, Hens and Chickens and
Cranes Reefs. Still not a lot of numbers but big sizes.

BLUE CRABS- Now theres a lot of keepers. The best is the back coves of the
Connecticut River, particularly at night. Some fair catches are coming from
the DEP Piers again best at night, Oyster River and the Causeway.

Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2007 08:19:41 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, July 20th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- If things were slow at the last report , they're even slower
in this weeks report. The Race has had some medium sized bass on ebb tides
with most of the catch going to trollers. Drifting both days and nights has
had mediocre results. We haven't heard of any concentrations of bass, there
seems to be more of a scattering of small schools. Techniques that cover
more ground such as tube and worm or trolling bucktails seem to be having
better results. The live bait drifters are getting some jumbos on the reefs
from Southwest to Bartletts but the numbers are way down from a couple of
week ago. On live bait, theres a few schools of bunker in the Connecticut
River with the only results coming at dawn. Hickory shad are here in light
numbers and less in Niantic.

BLUEFISH- For small blues travel to the Race and Plum Gut, locally they're
less numerous but bigger. The action in the Connecticut River has been
mostly on bait both from shore and boat. Shore casters from Saybrook Point
have been getting some decent sizes with best results on the ebb tide.
Snappers are getting past the 3" mark now.

FLUKE- It can best be described as spread out. We have weighed in some nice
fluke this past week from Soundview to Montauk. The best news is that the
Connecticut River has some of the best fluking we've seen in the last five
or six years, not all keepers but a fair shot at some decent sizes. Most of
them are found in the channels from North to the Breakwater. Thats a tough
spot to fish on the weekends with boat traffic, best left to week days. The
30' band of water off Soundview is worthwhile and the 70' plus band between
Hatchetts and Black Point has the best of sizes.

BLACKFISH- Even less interest this week with not too much effort for blacks.
Most anglers have given up for the summer.

PORGIES- Most anglers are reporting some nice sized ones at Hatchetts,
Bartletts and the rockpiles near Cornfield. The numbers are light, may be a
good idea to try chumming.

BLUE CRABS- The early crabs that we saw at the beginning of June have grown
into some monsters. Most of the crabs are running on the just shy of the
keeper mark with enough big ones to make it worthwhile. They are getting
some at the DEP Piers, Oyster River and the Causeway.

Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2007 07:57:08 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, July 13th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Things got a bit slower in bass circles this week. The usual
gathering spots of the Race and Plum Gut aren't giving up a lot of bass.
Some of the closer reefs such as Bartletts and Hatchetts and occaisionally
Long Sand Shoal are yeilding some jumbos on live bait. There seems to be
fewer but larger bass on those reefs. Tube and worm is also producing on the
reefs and shoreline but it seems to be a slower method than previous
seasons. Chunkers are getting medium sized bass in the Sluiceway. Some small
to medium sized bass have showed up on the Watch Hill Reefs. There also has
been an occaisional big bass caught from the DEP Piers.
The bunker have been better this morning in the lower River after a scarcity
of two weeks. Still not too much bait reported to the west of us.

BLUEFISH- The bass have left a void at the Race, Plum Gut and Pigeon Rip
this week and the blues have filled it. There have been some pods of jumbo
blues along the Old Saybrook to Niantic shore and some larger schools of
very small choppers in the same area. Casters from Saybrook Point, Niantic
and the DEP Piers have been getting some good sizes.

FLUKE- Good news, bad news. Good- the fluking is good in the Connecticut
River with fluke up to 7 pounds being caught just a few pints of gas away.
Boat traffic permitting, the channel from North Cove to the Breakwater has
been good with mixed sizes including a few doormats. The deeper waters,
thats 80' plus off Black Point to Hatchetts has also given up some doormats
this week. Bad news-Soundview, Waterford and Long Sand Shoal are yielding
smaller fish with more shorts than keepers.

BLACKFISH- There seems to be a lack of interest this week with not too much
effort for blacks. Most anglers have given up for the summer.

PORGIES- Some good sizes but light on numbers are Hatchetts and Bartletts,
same at Cranes and Hens and Chickens.

BLUE CRABS- Some good reports came in from the Causeway and Oyster River all
indicators are still strong.

Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2007 12:12:21 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, July 6th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Its on the upswing this week with the bite in the Race and
Plum Gut picking up, however the night bite is strongly favored. Locally the
reefs from Cornfield to Bartletts have been giving up some larger bass on
live bait- bunker, porgies or hickory shad. The bunker have been moving
east, New Haven to Westbrook have had very sparse schools of bunker for the
past few weeks. The Connecticut River and Niantic have also been tough
spots to get bait with the Thames being better. It seems that the usual
population of menhaden the we've seen the last few seasons have shifted to
the east. If you're set on daytime fishing its time for the tube and worm or
fresh bunker.
They're betting a few bass from the DEP Piers and Saybrook Point on bait.

BLUEFISH- The Race, Plum Gut and Pigeon Rip have made a comeback this week
for some daytime jigging for medium sized blues. The mouth of the
Connecticut River has some mixed sizes including some monsters, mostly on
bait for both boat and shorebound anglers. Theres a fair amount of sandeels
around this year with smaller blues chasing them near the mouth of the
River. Bait seiners have got some 2-3" snappers this week.

FLUKE- Reports have been generally good all over thats overally generalized
but a true assessment. Now its better in some spots than others, the RI
Beaches from the Misquamicut and east to Matunuck have been very good with
limits and doormats being common. There have also been some very good
reports from the southeast waters off Fishers Island. Closer to home Long
Sand Shoal, Soundview and the Millstone/Waterford have been good.

BLACKFISH- Not too many reports this week, its still worth a try at
Hatchetts and Black Point if you can get through the porgies.

PORGIES- Still on the upswing as the schools get thicker. Hatchetts, Hens
and Chickens and Bartletts have good populations. Some are being caught from
shore at Harkness and Niantic.

BLUE CRABS- Its been an early and good start to the season. Good sized crabs
have been caught in both the Oyster and Connecticut Rivers.

Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2007 10:04:11 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, June 29th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- This was the week for bass fishing to slow up a bit. Theres
been some good sized bass in the lower Connecticut River but not a lot of
them. Its slow fishing but chunkers and live bait fishermen have got a few
bass up to 40 pounds over the past week. It seems like a new batch of
bunkers have seeped in over the the last 2 days. Niantic has few bunkers but
some hickory shad. The Thames River has a load of bunker and some jumbo bass
to go along with them. Schoolies are running along the Old Lyme- Old
Saybrook Shoreline succumbing to tube and worm during daylight and casters
getting a few during low light. In general its time to switch to summer mode
with the best daytime action being live/fresh bait or tube and worm. The
Race has been slow the last few days with nights better than days. I suspect
that will improve on the downside of this moon.

BLUEFISH- Theres some blues in the lower River running from 2 to 15 pounds
with the latter being rare but reported this week. Fresh chunk bait has been
the best producer for both shore and boat fishing. Jigging has produced some
good results at Plum Gut and Pigeon Rip, mostly on the flood tide.

FLUKE- Fluking seems very democratic, with some fluke being spread out
fairly evenly. The only place the numbers seem larger is along the RI South
Shore. Theres been a good pick of fluke at soundview and a bit better off
Millstone. The 80' plus waters off Waterford and Old Lyme are producing
fewer but better sized fluke. The official keeper / short index for this
week is 1 in 10.

BLACKFISH- Some good catches were reported in the shallower waters of
Hatchetts, Bartletts and Cranes Reefs.

PORGIES- They're getting better this week as more reports are coming in
from anglers trolling tube and worm and getting live bait. The best reefs to
try are Hatchetts and Southwest.

Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 12:30:00 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, June 22nd,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Some good sized bass have settled in on the local reefs. Big
bass are hitting large live baits on Hatchetts, Bartletts, Cornfield and
Long Sand Shoal. Bunker has been the bait of choice with some catches on
hickory shad and porgies. The bunker have been spotty in the Connecticut
River and most of the local estuaries. The usual drifts in the Race have
been producing with moderate sucess. Southwest and Six Mile Reefs have had
bass for bait drifters and trollers. School to medium sized bass have been
hitting on the surface at the mouth of the River a few evenings this week.
Tube and worm trolling has been effective with mostly schoolies along the
Old Lyme to Waterford run.
Shore fishing has tapered off at the DEP Piers with best results coming at
dark with bait. Hammonassett State Park has had schoolies on the beach most
evenings. Theres been schoolies along the Old Lyme beaches at or near dark
hours. Reports from the RI beaches has a pick at the breachways.

BLUEFISH- theres mixed sizes of blues at the Mouth of the Connecticut River
from one to three feet long but theres no concentration of them. Pluggers
are getting a few most mornings and evenings along Great Island, chunkers
are getting more consistent results. Long Sand Shoal has had some big
choppers for chunkers. The Race and Gut have a fair run of blues hitting
diamond jigs.

FLUKE- Reports are pretty even with medium sized fluke with an odd doormat
coming in from Greenport, Montauk and Fishers Island. The numbers are not so
great with the fish spread out fairly evenly. There have been some limit
catches this week from Black Point and The Millstone area. The Soundview
area has been producing less than limits.

BLACKFISH- A few good catches were heard of at Hatchetts and Black Point.

PORGIES- Reports got a lot better this week at Hatchetts, Bartletts and
Cornfield.

Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2007 08:37:16 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, June 15th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- Action this week has been mixed with results dependent on
bait. If you had live or fresh bait and hit Long Sand Shoal, Hatchetts,
Southwest, some of the smaller local reefs or the Race it was a likely
score. Sizes are running just around keeper plus or minus. Dawn or dusk
casting at the lower Connecticut River produced scattered results. Theres
bunker in the lower River but not the numbers we saw in the latter part of
last summer. Branford and west has a good body of menhaden.
The Watch Hill Reefs haven't had a lot of action this week but Block Island
has been good as has the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay.
Bait fishers are still getting some mixed sizes of bass from the DEP Piers
and Saybrook Point with fresh bunker or hickory shad.

BLUEFISH- The lower Connecticut River still has some good plugging early and
late in the day and fair bait fishing the rest of the time. Long Sand Shoal
has some good sized choppers for chunkers. Southwest Reef, Plum Gut , Race
and Pigeon Rip have had mixed results this week for blues.

FLUKE- Generally good fluking this week when the weather permitted a good
drift. We've been getting some of the best reports in a few years from Long
Sand Shoal and Soundview off Old Lyme. The River has some decent fluking
when the traffic allows. The south side of Fishers and off the RI Beaches
has had some excellent reports.

BLACKFISH- Yesterday was opening, day no reports yet.

PORGIES- No great scores but some scup coming from Bartletts, Hatchetts and
Black Point.

Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2007 10:04:41 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, June 8th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The bass action is shifting outside the Connecticut River.
Long Sand Shoal and other local reefs are holding bass of mixed sizes. There
are still some good sized bass in the mouth of the River hitting surface
lures but its a low light game. Theres bunker in the lower River, not easy
to find with regularity. Live and fresh chunked baits are scoring best in
daylight hours.
The Race and Plum Gut picked up again this week with live bait scoring best
but with bucktailers and diamond jiggers also scoring. Southwest Reef had
good action for jiggers with a mix of bass and blues.

BLUEFISH- Theres a mix of small to medium blues at Southwest Reef and medium
sizes at the Race, Gut and Pigeon Rip. Theres some schools of small blues
running along the shoreline on both sides of the River. In the River theres
a scattering of medium sized blues near Great Island.

FLUKE- Its off to a pretty good start with the keeper to short ratio
running about 1 in 10 locally. The Connecticut River has some fluke from the
Mouth of North Cove to the Breakwater and Soundview and Long Sand Shoal have
had some decent sizes but not too many limit catches. Two Tree Channel also
has a bunch. Good reports are also coming from the RI South Shore and the
south side of Fishers Island.

BLACKFISH- Season closed until June 15th.

PORGIES- Last week we reported that the NY season opened on 7/1, it actually
opened on June 1st. No reports came in this week locally but its fair to say
they're out there.

Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2007 00:09:31 -0400
Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, June 1st, 2007

STRIPED BASS- The bass are still at the mouth of the Connecticut River with
fewer numbers and larger sizes. Theres a good chance to score a 20 pound
plus bass on a lure if you're willing to be early and persistent. Theres
some bunker in the River but they're not as thick as they were two weeks
ago. The piers in the River are still giving up schoolies and a few keepers,
worms are getting the schoolies and chunks of fresh bunker or hickory shad
are getting larger bass.
The action in the Race and Gut have been fair with the best action going to
the trollers. The Sluiceway on the ebb has given up a few larger bass. The
Thames River has a good batch of bunker and is holding good sized bass.
Theres a lot of small schoolies along the the RI South Shore.

BLUEFISH- They're in the River pretty good mostly along Great Island and
hitting surface lures. The Race and Gut have fair action and most spots
you're trying for fluke.

FLOUNDER- The season is closed for the year.

FLUKE- Decent reports are coming from Fishers Island, Misquamicut and
Greenport with no one must go spot. They are spread out now with no
migratory concentration. Given a choice for action heading west towards
Fishers Island and on to RI seems to be getting the best results. Theres
been some action at Long Sand Shoal and off Soundview.

BLACKFISH- Season Closed.

PORGIES- Season opens today in CT and RI but not until July in NY

Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, May 25th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The bass at the mouth of the Connecticut River are still
going great guns and so are the anglers trying for them. Pressure is putting
the bass off a bit. Its still one of the best shots at bass on light tackle.
Theres a good number of bass from Chester to the Breakwater.Surface lures
are still bringing the best results. From the DEP Piers theres been mixed
sizes on sandworms and better sizes on bunker or mackeral chunks.
Outside the River there have been bass at Southwest Reef, East Rip, the
Race, Plum Gut and Hatchetts Reef. The reports from the RI Beaches have been
good with schoolies.

BLUEFISH- They are here in force. The Race and Plum Gut have been fair to
good, the River has had them chopping Slug-gos all week.

FLOUNDER- A couple of reports of flounder in Niantic and one report of some
flats at the Breakwater. The season ends May 30th.

FLUKE- They have spread out pretty well by now. Montauk ,Greenport and
Mattituck reports have been fair at best with the chance to hang a doormat.
Fishers Island has been better and the reports from RI have been slow to
start this week. There have been a number of reports from the Connecticut
River of anglers catching fluke on lures meant for stripers.

BLACKFISH- Season Closed.

Report: UPDATED BY PAT ON FRIDAY, May 18th,
2007

STRIPED BASS- The Connecticut River is fishing very good right now but the
sometimes heavy rains forecast for the next few days makes the conditions
tough. The bass will be in the River but tougher to find and you'll have to
dodge a lot of logs. They've been in Plum Gut since mid week and should be
in the Race this weekend. They are also in East Rip and should be in
Southwest Reef in a couple of days. Its no longer necessary to confine your
bass fishing to the River.
Long Sand Shoal has had some bass on live bunker. The DEP Piers have also
had some larger bass on bunker and numbers of bass on worms.

BLUEFISH- They've only been around a week or so and we're already getting
complaints from the fluke fishermen that they're pests. There have been some
reports of blues off Millstone and surprisingly not too many reports in the
River. Both Montauk and Greenport are loaded with blues.

FLOUNDER- A couple of reports of flounder in Niantic.

FLUKE- There have been reports from early in the week of consistent catches
as far west as Mattituck on the north shore of Long Island and New Haven on
our side of the pond. A few were reported caught on Long Sand Shoal last
weekend. Rhode Island opens up today and we should get some action over the
week end if the winds lay down. Fishers Island has had some fluke for over a
week.
Our fluke contest is open with no entries yet.

BLACKFISH- Season Closed.
