Ponkapoag 8/14/11
Second trip to Ponky - still trying to get a handle on this water. On the water at 6:00 AM. One other boat on the water, at western side of pond fishing the pads. I paddle out from launch area and just start casting my trusty rebel minnow in all directions. Pretty soon hook into a 15 inch pickerel. A few more casts and another small pickerel. There is a very light wind rising from the west so I just slowly drift east and cast for a while. Noticed a few more boats launch and everyone is heading west to work the pads.
Change over to a spinner bait. A few more casts and I'm into a nice bass. Getting lots of small hits and seeing a lot of good sized yellow perch following bait up to the boat. Switch over to plastic worm and try to work the shore structure and pads, but I'm too impatient. I like to cast and crank. So I'm back to the spinner bait and hook into another pickerel, this time a 19 incher that's actually strong enough to pull the kayak. Kept with the spinner bait and hooked (and lost) a few more pickerel. Probably could have had a ton of fun on ultralight going after perch if I'd wanted dinner. All told 5 pickerel and one bass. Oh, and a HUGE snapping turtle sauntered underneath my kayak in the rock shallows. Gawd those things are primeval looking. A fun morning.
Later that day, went to Dicks to resupply. My eye fell upon a bait casting combo but it was unpriced. Clerk looked it up and gave it a tag of $24.93. Cool! It was normally priced at $69.99 so I'm thinking SCORE. I get to the register and the combo rings up at 50% off, so now I'm paying $12.47. Double SCORE! Did I mention it's tax free weekend? Oh, and there's a $20 rebate coupon, so I make a profit of $7.53 and get the rod and reel. CHA-CHING!
