Horn Pond 7/8/2013

Hit up Horn pond today after work for a few hours. Air temp was 82 when I arrived around 4 and 70 when I left at 9. I took a left from the ramp and started cranking with a kvd 1.5 sexy shad. The water was low and there were a couple of Buoys out near the water dept. There was water bubbling up in 3 spots too like there was a broken pipe under water. I avoided it. Went over to the shady shorline and started throwing a deep diving craw pattern crank. The water drops off to about 12 feet pretty quickly and theres a lot of wood in the water from all the trees. No takers but fishing that shoreline faces the walking path so I took my time if you catch my drift. I spot a newly downed tree just inside the 2nd cove so I go check it out. There's a breeze but I'm able to position the boat perfectly to take my time and work it over. I read an article that said to make your first cast to the nastiest part so ZI did. Nothing. I worked it over from one side to the top of it and back down the other side where my first fish of the day hit a Boag Hog Baits 3/8 green pumpkin swim jig that I added rattles to with a black/red flake chigger craw trailer. He was about 3 1/2 lbs
There are a couple of pods of pads right there so I worked them over with the jig but no takers. I went back across to hit all the overhangs on the walking path side. Eye candy everywhere. I pick up my 2nd fish on the jig and he goes around 2 pounds. I continue to work the jig the same way but don't pick up anything else. I get out of the cove and head to the island. The water is deep over here so I'm throwing the deep diving crank bait but have the trolling motor set about midway so I can get over there.
When I get to the island I notice the breeze is creating a nice ripple, it's clouded up, and the sun is setting. Buzz bait time. I had a white one tied on so I start with that. I get a swipe after 4-5 cast. I throw the jig around the same area but no takers.
As it'll be getting dark soon I decide I'll go all the way across to the shoreline just a little way down from the other ramp with the smaller parking area. On the way over I switch to a black 1/2 ounce double bladed buzz bait. 2nd cast I bag a 2 pounder. 5 or 6 more casts and I get another one around 2 pounds. I'll catch these all night
I'm just going down the shoreline making as many casts as I can. I hook up with a dink and waterski him to the boat. He flies off the hook as I go to pull him in. Hahahaha whatever dink.
There's a couple of guys shore fishing so I have to go around them. I get a swipe at the buzz when I get back to the shore on the other side of them. I don't bother with the jig as I am now in head for the ramp mode.
When I'm in front of the parking lot almost at the ramp I pick up my last fish on the buzz bait that was probably 1 1/2.
Do this at Horn and you will catch fish.

  • Nope. This trip is 100% legit. The people asked for details and god dammit I gave em details.

  • I thought that was just more misdirection...

  • Actually if you look at the hotspot I give those details

  • Oh, come on, you're not even gonna give up the size and color? Geez!

  • if you're really getting more, grab me a few and i'll pay you back? you know the size and color...

  • 7 more on the buzz bait today. I lost another one when my line snapped during a cast. That's 2 out of 3 lost since I got them last Wednesday. I'm gonna order like 10 of them

  • Oh he's a nut alright!

  • Not a big fan of Horn. Haven't gone there this year at all. You can catch some good fish here and there and the ramp is an easy launch, so I can see the attraction.

  • i just started throwing the buzzbait recently. shawn's a buzzbait master. it's just like anything new...gotta stick with it and have patience.

  • Horn is one of those places that have a walking path all the way around it so there is a constant stream of walkers and joggers
