First Trip To The Farm

Went with my girlfriend to Farm pond in Framingham for the first time this past Sunday. I had read a lot of good things about this body of water mainly on MAFF so I decided to give it a shot.

Put the boat in at around 4:30 and right off the bat I noticed that it was shallow and real weedy, some type of weeds I never seen before (invasive species? I dont know). Also good water clarity. Started fishing the left (eastern) side of the pond as it was more sheltered from the wind. I was thinking the weeds could be trouble, but here goes. First cast sure enough I hook up on a nice one, I thought it was just weeds at first but then realized it was a fish so I didnt get a good hookset. I got her to the boat and she started flailing around like crazy and got off. Oh well, it happens.

I then proceeded to catch two small bass in a row. After that my line somehow got irreparably tangled and I had to cut it. I barely had enough line left on my reel after that, but I was too frustrated and lazy to respool. So I continued to fish with my limited amount of line, cursing here and there about the tangle and about losing that first fish and then....... nothing. Not a single nibble for over half an hour.

I continued muttering obscenities, my bad mood began to escalate and I told myself: "I better start catching some damn fish or this has been a complete disaster". And literally immediately after I said that I catch two bass in a row. They were bigger than the first two but still nothing to write home about, still it was enough to brighten my mood considerably. We pressed on in search of deeper water and found it about half way down the pond right where the shoreline turns a little to the left. This is where I was hoping to find bigger fish.

I made a couple casts and then started drifting too far away from the spot so I paddled my way back, made another cast with my senko and let it sit there for a minute. Soon as I lifted my rod I could feel a sizable fish on the line. I was sure to make a strong hookset after losing that first fish and the fight was on. She made several spectacular jumps before I lip landed her. A very nice bass. My crappy spring loaded scale said it was 3 pounds, which seemed about right to me. We snapped some shots and released her.

I later caught three more bass on the small side before it got dark. Deirdre couldnt read anymore so I convinced her to fish some. She was complaining that she wasnt getting any bites. I told her "cast over there into those weeds" And BAM! she reels in a nice 1 1/2 pounder. We were on our way back going through the shallow weedy area when I switched over to a black scumfrog bigfoot. On the third cast a fish came and just straight annihilated it! A solid two pounder. I absolutely love catching fish on topwater. Turned out to be a real good trip. First trip to farm pond and certainly wont be my last!
