largemouth bass - first cast!
largemouth bass - first cast!
This fish hit a Booyah Pad Crasher frog. Didn't have my scale ready yet and wanted to release the fish quickly, so no official weight - estimated 3-3.5 pounder.

Dry spell over
Dry spell over
While my better half has been successful with catching a few bass, I have not been...for the past 3 weeks.

Hit Glen Lake and managed a few smallies and one largemouth - all caught on top water poppers. Seems like the dog days of Summer are over - fish are putting-on the feed bag and starting to move in the shallows.

Lazy & Hot@ Wachusett Res.
Lazy & Hot@ Wachusett Res.
Labor Day weekend was breezy sunny and hot out.We planned on Quabbin but was kinda risky due to the wind conditions forecast. We didn't want a "three hour tour"la la la.My wife and I,ended up at gate 13.scarhill rd.Feeling lazy I left my fly rods in the truck. Equipped with chairs and a 6.5' med/lite spinning rod with 6lb.floro and other picnic stuff we hiked straight down to the middle cove.Slow calm and plenty of patience was the key to targeting smallies.I was down there,at the other cove last Friday morning as well and caught 4 bass, two were dinks, one big dink, haha and a nice 1.999 lb.well it felt like 4lb. largemouth, and got cut off on one,and dropped one.The fish in that big crystal clear water are really strong and acrobatic.Monday started off real dead.I walked back and forth learning the bottom for about 3 hrs..I fished shallows with swim baits, all assorted colors with no hits.Went back to the drop-shot with the notorious "ROBO WORM"size1 hook. There was a ledge that I was kinda pitching over and I picked up a couple dinks that will either totally inhale the bait ,or shred the crap out of it.The wind was really picking up and there were some waves crashing against the boulders to the right so I climbed over there.I wacky rigged a used robo worm and casted into the wind.As soon as the 1/4oz weight hit the bottom my line started stripping.I took my time with it,it was jumping all over. That was the biggest of the day,3lb. using the "old school"scale.I caught another one shortly after 2lb.same way,slow,still,wacky,patent..All fish caught on, robo worm, thinking of buying a t-shirt..Wachusett is huge and hard to fish with out getting skunked.Don't let anyone tell you that the fish aren't biting out there. It holds 5 Mass State fishing records.

Great Cover for Bass
Great Cover for Bass
This area has excellent coverage for bass, with a grassy cover field, some downed trees, some rock ledges and submerged boulders... We got many hits in this area, but only caught the one on this short trip.

Blugills in the shallows
Blugills in the shallows
The far shore in the shallows was boiling with blugills popping the surface for insects that were getting blown-off the overhanging trees - could have left with a basket full if I wanted too...but don't have the patience to fillet 'em. I usually don't target gills - they were targeting me and to my surprise, attacking my popper just as it hit the water (was after bass, not gills).

A bonus walleye
A bonus walleye
Through all these wild encounters with the bedding bass, a very unusual species turns up on the end of my line. Walleyes are not very prominent in this part of the country. Not sure fish and game knew they were in here either. Loved catching them in Michigan on 4 lb test with big fat crawlers. This one only 18 in looks bigger still tryin to get this selfie thing down!

friday kresson lake
On the way home- stopped here for 25 mins. Caught 2 huge bass, but they unhooked-my pole was severly bent during the battles to land them. Got 1 with a hinged jitterbug and the other with the blue and yellow spinner- got this 1 with the spinner as well...a nice bass but not as big as the 2 i lost!

pic#1 of a dying bass
pic#1 of a dying bass
While jeremy hooked his bass, we heard a splash under some hanging bushes-we thought it was a turtle. Few minutes later we see this bass on it's side trying to get rightside up. I tried to move it with my pole and wound up hooking it. There wasn't any damage that we could see, so we put it in the main lake, hoping it would get upright again....no luck. It moved a few more times, but kept on it's side and finally died. We were sad and jeremy was crying, we just couldn't understand why it died...we felt horrible about the whole situation
