Galen St. Bridge Charles river Fishing Report

Early Morning By The Galen St. Bridge

I woke up at 5am Monday morning to do some fishing down by the Galen St. bridge. I got there shortly after 5:20am. About a handful of other anglers where already fishing the Watertown side of the Charles from the bridge down to the first 4 openings in the brush along the shore line. I headed east to find an unclaimed opening for myself. I was just opposite the green T bus garage off of route 16. Things started off a little slow as I first tried my tiny torpedo, then a jitterbug, then a 1/32 chartreuse jig with a Berkeley honey worm...I finally got some action with a 1/64 jig with a trout craw but it was only a sunfish. I only brought one rod with me so I was changing baits with a snap swivel. However, I could see lots of swirls from fish surface feeding on the bugs. Not wanting to catch sunfish all day I put on my Rebel "Value" floating minnow in silver, F07 size on the Rapala scale. I fished it with a pause jerk retrieve close to the shore. Finally I hooked up with a little small mouth bass holding just under the branches of an over hanging tree. I took a quick picture of that one and returned it to the river. While I was fussing around trying to unhook this fish I heard some splashing behind me. I turned around to see a pair of really large fish churning the water in front of me. Then the where gone down river. I switched out the Rebel for a real Rapala tied on with Rapala knot, size F05 in the bleeding copper flash pattern. I tossed that one out for a bit without luck at the same location. I move upriver toward the bridge where another guy was bottom fishing with about four rods near the pilings of the dock that got washed away during this years floods. With the Rapala still tied on I hooked up with another Small mouth bass lurking just west of the pilings. I did not take a picture of him because it took me awhile to get him unhooked and I did not want to stress him out any more then I had too. Then the wife called putting an end to this trip.
