A Day At The Mosquito Factory

Went out to Head's pond with a friend early in the morning. the drizzly, cloudy weather made ideal conditions for a mosquito banquet and the plethora of stagnant vernal pools around the ponds breed them in the billions. the soggy weather seemed to keep the ticks preoccupied though and I only came home with one today. braving the bugs and the rain, the bite was extremely slow. It didn't seem to matter what bait we were throwing, or where we were throwing it, all we got were bumps and no takes. Crazy crawlers, torpedos, Rapalas and wacky rigs all got shaken and splashed, but never went under. my luck changed halfway through the trip; however, when I found a painted crossing the road and gave him a lift. the bait thus far unsuccessful was suddenly irresistible and in the first five minutes I caught the same pickerel four times. seeing my friend was not having as much fun just watching me catch fish, I decided to move on. we passed by a puddle and he bet me a dollar I'd catch a bass out of it, so I laughed, threw in my line and out came a one pounder. at the next spot I caught a few more then my buddy yelled for me to come quickly. thinking he'd caught a fish I ran over, but he was just staring at a giant snapping turtle burying some raccoon food where he wanted to fish. it didn't seem to need our help, so we went to the other side of the cove. frustrated by the swirls around his bait with no hits, my friend decided to give up and try a new bait. while he had his rod down I cast into the corner he'd been hammering, expecting to reel in a prize dinker and have a laugh, but when it surfaced I knew he was never going to forgive me. after stealing his lunker I felt compelled to give him some space and fish by myself for a while. on my own I caught an even bigger bass, then we had to call it a day. on our way out the rain stopped and the sun finally came out.
