2 Pond Day
Well tagged up with a friend for what was a full day fishing for him but a half day for me. as I had family commitments. We met up at 6am the plain was big stuff (which I am not a fan of) and top-water. Ok I am in when you mention top-water. Well the early A.M. did not pan out to well and after 2 fish for me one on a buzz-bait the other on a Berkley slug I was on to a 2nd pond by 9:30am.
Pond 2 was closerto home for me and a super secret. I thank my buddy for telling me about it and out of respect to it I won't return without his heads up. It was a punching only deal pretty much. Since I am not usually one for multiple ponds in a day never-mind just being able to do 1 thing all day I tried other things like a swimming jig,spinner-bait and buzz-bait. But the only thing they bit on was punching. Having been well aware of this technique for years but not truly applying/trying it until last year, as I did not have the gear truly needed to do it properly. I felt more comfortable this time around given I had purchased, over the winter, an actual punching rod and switched from steel weights to the tungsten jobs. I fished a 3/4oz weight with a fatty craw, crazy leg chiggercraw and a power hog. Well I caught 8 bass two pickles with the fatty doing the most of the work. I was heading home at 1:45pm.
I did manage to do something funky to my elbow when on my first fish I did not have the rod fully extend (it has a collapsible butt) and it rolled and tweaked my elbow. Well all day doing the pitching thing did not seem to help the pull/tweaking. All in all a good trip and thanks to Evan for taking me out in the A.M. and giving me some great tips on the whole punching deal. Hope my elbow heals up so I a can fish again this year though punching may be out until next season.
